- novenator, on 07/06/2009, -4/+28There has been trouble in this region since the dawn of civilization.
- JimSwarthow, on 07/06/2009, -16/+39why is it that the Religion of Peace always seems, to one degree or another, mixed up in whatever violence that's occurring around the world on any given day? total coincidence I'm sure.
- ZiggityZhang, on 07/06/2009, -2/+19chillypac, according to the article it was other witnesses independent of the local government that reported Uyghurs attacking civilians and causing destruction. I despise the CCP and its propoganda as much as the next person, but I'm not gonna naively believe that people protesting are gonna behave like model citizens either.
- Sixteh, on 07/06/2009, -4/+21According to Wikipedia, of the 1000 killed or injured only 40 were Uygurs--the protesters. Sounds like they were out injuring people, not the other way around. It's being denounced as an atrocity by the government, but if so then how are the casualties among the spectators and not the protesters?
- maledei, on 07/06/2009, -9/+25So, if I interpret this correctly, Uyghurs targeted Han-Chinese because of some rumors, and the rioters killed over a hundred of them before riot police was able to beat the racist mob down? Not riot-police killing hundreds of Uyghurs...
- Xavie87, on 07/06/2009, -2/+18Besides I don't know how this turned into poor Uyghur being oppressed *****... The fact here is that rioters are killing innocent bypasses, the reasons are irrelevant. You don't kill innocent people and then play victim, but there are of course those idiots that let their brainwashed ''Evil China'' bias control their brains. You cannot expect rioters to do want they want and then expect police to accept it whether it is in China or not. And it is this that allot of people fail to see because there heads are filled with anti China nonsense...
- GorfTron, on 07/06/2009, -6/+20Uyghurs with attitudes.
- adventureindia, on 07/06/2009, -2/+16This region is facing this problem from a long time
- cubicrystal, on 07/06/2009, -2/+15*Ethnic unrest* - why don't they just say Muslims rioting?
- MxM111, on 07/06/2009, -0/+11That statement can be applied to any place where human civilization "dawned" .
- Novion76, on 07/06/2009, -2/+13I'm trying to find the articles I read on the incident that previously sparked this, but for now here is one such link. Not to say that the Chinese media does not also often distort things (or straight out come up with lies) but keep in mind that the US media often twists things to fit the view they want to give as well. This incident didn't occur just because of regular tensions with Uyghurs in region. A previous incident sparked it in which Uyghur workers in a different region attempted to rape a female Han worker (multiple incidents, not the same woman) and the supervisors refused to take action, which led to the workers taking things into their own hands.
http://globalvoicesonline.org/2009/07/06/china-uru ... - 3tcp, on 07/06/2009, -5/+16- Xinjiang has only been conquered by China since the Qing dynasty in the mid 18th century, not the tang dynasty
- The people of Xinjiang are culturally, ethnically, religiously and linguistically distinct from China. China is absolutely foreign.
- Xinjiang has been geographically isolated from mainland China by the Gobi desert and lines on a map do not change the fact that they are entirely seperate peoples.
A unique identity and the right to self determination trumps the right of China to keep a territory and people under their thumb due to 300 years of being technically within their borders. It didn't stop India from getting independence from England, why should it stop Xinjiang from getting independence from their colonizers?
@Xave87
Maybe you should do some reading and join the rest of us in the 21st century. Check it out, this movement occurred 100 years ago in the west, it's time for China to catch up if they want to be thought of as more than a backwards third world totalitarian regime.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decolonisation - jytsai, on 07/06/2009, -0/+10According to the official Chinese government mouthpiece:
156 dead, 1,080 injured. Seeing where this is coming from, things are probably underestimated.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-07/07/conte ...
I can't believe CNN.com's headline story is how Michael Jackson's memorial will be "star-studded affair". FAIL. In fact, this story isn't even on the front page at all. Double FAIL. - cirtexceo, on 07/06/2009, -2/+12it was a planned attack on the han chinese :\ many kids/elders were killed in this by the Uygurs and it is very saddening...on busy streets.
- Xavie87, on 07/06/2009, -5/+14Gimme a break these rioters are obviously crominals. No matter what, you don't attack innocent people because you feel like it and then play victim.
- maledei, on 07/06/2009, -2/+11if you watch those videos you can see han-chinese getting attacked and beaten bloody. If you can't believe your own eyes but only anti-communist propaganda from either clericalfascist tibetans or radical islamist uyghurs then then you are obviously beyond help.
No doubt that the chinese state is obviously surpressing its people, but i'd like to know what your expectation of the state would be when hundreds were killed in similar race-riots in the us. - flyinguitar90, on 07/06/2009, -2/+10Xinjiang has been "kept under the thumb of a foreign government with which they have nothing in common" since the Tang Dynasty in 600AD.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7Are these the same "ethnics" that Obama let go free in Bermuda?
Crazy Muslims who were caught in Afghanistan after attending an al Qaida terrorist training camp? What could go wrong? - grey580, on 07/06/2009, -0/+72 sides to every story folks. I'd like to see a timeline of what really happened here so we can figure out what really happened.
- compucomp2, on 07/06/2009, -1/+7You mean, isn't the US going to hypocritically support Al-Qaeda aligned terrorists who are not fighting America but are instead fighting China, just like it did during the Cold War to essentially create the mess it has now in Afghanistan?
- RuSTeDs, on 07/06/2009, -5/+11Oh great. Now we side with the communist authoritarians and their ban on religion because it hurts the Uighurs since they are Muslims. What sick ***** is this? If it were up to people like you who want to blame everything on "religion of peace", Bill Clinton would have never intervened in the Balkans and would have let Milosovic carry out his little genocide and Reagan would have never helped Afghanistan stave off the Russian invasion. RTFA: its more about Han and Uighur ethnicities and the discrimination faced by the minority Uighurs. You talk about Native Indians and Jews and how people should "learn" to live with discrimination, as if its going on in the current world. You really have no moral ground bro. You just like to ride the 'Hate dem Muslins!' bandwagon as far as you can.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6"when the rest of the world abandoned this kind of colonialism 70 years ago"
except for the U.S. right? I am in no way being supportive of China, but there's an elephant in the room that you forgot to mention. - JCEEZ, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6I don' think it has much to do with Muslims, but more the Uyghurs.
http://www.factbook.net/muslim_pop.php
China has about 25% of the world's Muslim population, and they are, for the most part, just a peaceful and well integrated part of China. Depending on who you ask, the Uyghurs have been fighting for freedom (or causing civil unrest) since pre-Genghis Khan days.... - orsinoduke, on 07/06/2009, -2/+7en. another example of how 'the religion of peace' works
- MxM111, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6With all my respect, wiki can not be a reliable source in such matters so short after the events, which are very political.
For established sciences wiki is reliable, for this, it is not. - faskippy, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6Cough...*****...cough
- gantz9x, on 07/07/2009, -1/+6No offense but why does the religions of peace always revolve around violence? Atleast , thats all you hear about.
- TigerStar337, on 07/06/2009, -0/+5Dude, if a person knows what a proxy server is and how to use it, it is simple to bypass government firewalls. Wake up and smell the coffee!
- Wrangler76, on 07/07/2009, -0/+43tcp: except they didn't say that. The Chinese press AND -some- western media actually listed the complaints of the uighurs, which mimic info you find our free internet, and the main spark of the violence (2 uighurs being killed in confrontation with Chinese earlier). There's videos of Uighurs burning cars and beating innocents, including women, on Youtube. I suppose those were fabricated too. If you want to criticize China's press, at least make sure you're INFORMED. And you're right, they didn't riot for "no reason". They just rioted for stupid reasons, and killing innocents takes away any sympathy the world would have had for them.
- vertinox, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4I dunno... When the Chinese authorities make peaceful Buddhists riot, its not a far stretch of the imagination to make other regions riot.
- Donotsurf, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4Uyghur please.
- JimSwarthow, on 07/06/2009, -10/+14if oppression were a license to kill we'd have American Indians and Jews strapping c4 to themselves and blowing up Sbarros on a daily basis. but we don't. - so what's up w/ Musilms? it sounds like they got a raw deal in China (who doesn't in China) but what about the rest of the earth? why is it that they seem to always be in the mix? I realize you (and I) don't wanna condemn an entire group for the actions of a few, but there's a whole lot more than a few taking part in the violence. at one point you're gonna have to call bullsh!t. I made the call a while ago.
- antonycao, on 07/07/2009, -1/+5It's brutal! Innocent people in town were murdered in the street! It's a city with over 2 million people, about the size of Chicago or Houston. If hundreds of people were killed by rioters in Chicago - it would be called TERRORISM!!!
But it happened in communist China, then it is "ethnic unrest"! It must be Han Chinese (the victims) doing it wrong! **** you, CNN! A bunch of hypocrites! - azw202, on 07/06/2009, -5/+9 Yes Native Americans did retaliate and the majority were wiped out. The rest were forcibly put in camps. As for the jews they did not have the power or the means to retaliate. The ones who were able to escape went to other countries. Some of them even went to Albania a predominantly Muslim country. When the Germans occupied Albania in 1943, the Albanian population refused to comply with the Nazis' orders to turn over lists of Jews residing in the country. Many, if not all, were heavily influenced in their choice by Islam. As of today Jews or Native Americans are not facing ethnic cleansing. What rest of the world you are referring to? Iraq and Afghanistan? Yes when you invade or attack a country they tend to retaliate is common sense. We invaded Afghanistan after 911.At one point you're gonna have to point out the racist and i made that call a while ago. digg me down all you want
link to source of the Albanian saving Jews from the Nazis
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1192380 ... - mofro99, on 07/06/2009, -1/+5Jim, you remind me of those old guys who still cling to the notion that if your skin color is black, you will automatically have a smaller IQ and be more prone to violence. Its sad, but i don't blame you because you probably don't have any Muslim friends, or black friends at that. White mans burden must be tough to carry these days eh?
Stop watching so much Hollywood movies
PLANET OF THE ARABS-

- JeffyW, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3I'll bet the Whitehouse is "deeply concerned"
- azcowboy, on 07/06/2009, -5/+8中国政府软弱无能 呼唤镇压 血债血偿
- diggerwut, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Wow, these muslims are making enemies with both us and the Chinamese.
- spartakus99, on 07/06/2009, -2/+5Actually 3tcp is right. This area was not part of China but like the Tibet China annexed it and moved million of the Hans to outnumber the people of Xinjiang
- mofro99, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4b-b-b-but! all muslims are all turrorists! and they scared me alot in 9/11!
Didnt you watch those steven siegal movies?! Muslims are always evil! - Doc123, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4Yeah sure.
- azw202, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3but apparently invading a country for oil would huh
- spartakus99, on 07/06/2009, -6/+9JimSwarthowJimSwarthow, what would you do if somebody moves into your house and kick you out of it? What would you do if you watch your kids grow up with no prospects at all; no jobs and you are not allowed to even speak your own language? that is what happened to these people. These people have been mascaraed left and right, their lands stolen, they have no jobs, many of them are in exile. Their story is very similar to the Tibet and even worst. Religion has nothing to do with it. When we were oppressed by the British we had the American Revolution. All people are entitled to freedom and otherwise to their own "American Revolution". Don't you think so?
- indybluff, on 07/07/2009, -1/+4I'm crying. What are you going to do if it happen to your kid? What a crime!
The image is 100 times more powerful than any language!
http://photos.lutong.dreamhosters.com/albums/photo ... - Pinkertinkle, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4Bermuda, bahama come on pretty mama
- mattlb76, on 07/07/2009, -0/+32nd class citizens my ass, ethnic minorties are like the superior class in China thanks for goverment's "ethnic policy" which gives them a whole lot of privileges, if you are a Han Chinese they could beat you up right in front of a cop without consequence, and if you fight back, you end up in jail. I'm not exaggerating. I had the experience an Uigur pointed a machete at my face to force me buy his stuff: a piece of (expensive) candy cake. Every Chinese knows the rule: never get involved in any conflict with ethnics.
- Doc123, on 07/06/2009, -2/+5Han Chinese were brutally murdered by the Uygurs.
- yuanzhoulu, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3not really, i've been there. these kinds of events happen but are rare.
- HBZ55, on 07/06/2009, -1/+3The Uighurs released were not terrorists. In fact, only 50 of the more than 700 prisoners over there are actual terrorists. I recommend you to read this blog, it has a lot of background stories about the prisoners in Guantanamo: http://www.andyworthington.co.uk/
