Osama is Dead?
philipweiss.org — Former CIA agent Baer said interesting. Osama bin Laden is dead, he asserted; and we have to change our strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan. And give up the (neocon) program of spreading democracy by force. Baer thus echoed what former Ambassador George Lane said lately: Let the Taliban stay in Afghanistan, we can't stop 'em. Realism on the rise.

bhutto said he was dead in an interview that aired on 11/02/07 and then she herself was murdered on 12/27/07. interesting to note that when she said osama had been murdered, the interviewer did not seem in the least surprised and did not question her statement at all. - vowman, on 10/02/2008, -0/+13Benazir Bhutto said the same back in December 2007.

7 years after 911 the supposed mastermind behind the attacks is still at large, and the nation is entrenched in multiple Wars in the Middle East.
Is Bin Laden the Evil behind the attack or a mere front man in a larger picture, a Bogeyman?
We are told we are fighting a War on Terror, and that the Terrorists hate us for our freedom. If that is the case, why do our leaders take more and more of those freedoms away every day?

- factattack, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4"Olmert said it this week; the key to peace in the Middle East is to give up the West Bank and East Jerusalem and bring Iran back into the company of nations."
Why should Iran (who openly calls for death to Israel) be invited back to the company of nations? As long as the rogue bully mouthpiece keeps talking....
AND Why should anyone give up East Jerusalem? Last time I visited Jerusalem, there was free roaming for anyone who wasn't into that insane fashion statement--the bomb belt.
Is the West Bank enough? I wonder.- 911ArtStudent, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4Those are all illegally occupied territories. That's why Israel should return them:

Moreover Ahmadinejad has never threatened Israel with force. He has talked of apartheid Israel collapsing and emerging as a true democracy that doesn't keep half of it's population under martial law and under an illegal military occupation.

"The inflammatory "wiped off the map" quote was first disseminated not by Iran's enemies, but by Iran itself. The Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's official propaganda arm, used this phrasing in the English version of some of their news releases covering the World Without Zionism conference. International media including the BBC, Al-Jazeera, Time magazine and countless others picked up the IRNA quote and made headlines out of it without verifying its accuracy, and rarely referring to the source. Iran's Foreign Minister soon attempted to clarify the statement, but the quote had a life of its own. Though the IRNA wording was inaccurate and misleading, the media assumed it was true, and besides, it made great copy. "
The article goes on to splice and dice other interviews in which Ahmadinejad would not directly answer the question whether or not ISRAEL should be "wiped off the face of the map." The article carefully/accurately translates his statement/quotation to be the current REGIME...but nowhere does Ahmadinejad state that that is what he meant even though he was given many opportunities to do so. AND
Many Iranians (and others who do speak Farsi) took his words to mean Israel should be "wiped off the face of the map." The statement did fan the fire and rally the Jew-haters and did nothing to promote democracy. If Ahmadinejad loves democracy so much, why isn't he moving Iran toward democracy? (I favor republic.)
I realize it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to dissect all bias from the news reporting...we are never really as informed as we think we are--even if we are eyewitnesses, we have to interpret motivation. The outcome of his statement regardless of exact words was more hate spewed toward Israel, no one can deny this. Instigators are as guilty as those who act on their reports.
As for Finkelstein, I'm no expert. I do think people take extreme positions and both sides tend to stone the ones in the middle however balanced they are. It is ridiculous to say that he is a holocaust denier, but his position doesn't help those who are trying to keep the holocaust from reoccurring. There ARE people who revel in the destruction of ALL Jews. I have heard some of their propaganda--it is hateful.
The Israeli gov't has civil rights abuses. So does the US gov't. I guess optimists focus on the ratio. Palestinians are definitely victims (I cry at their desperation) but I don't think committing violence against the Israeli Jewish citizens helps their cause. Protective instincts are natural. And they will not help their cause by lashing out.
I'll get to the philipweiss article in a while...
