- mr100percent, on 05/05/2008, -6/+1And yet, it's not facing the Qibla (the direction Muslims pray), since Muslims pray Northeast in America, and this memorial is pointing Southeast. Simply inaccurate.
- novaculus, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2You're wrong. It points more closely in the direction of Mecca than many do.
- mr100percent, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1If the Earth was flat, you'd be correct. Go get a globe and a piece of string, and you'll see that to reach Mecca, you would have to fly over Europe (northeast). You can also prove this by calling Saudi airlines and asking if they fly Northeast or Southeast out of JFK, or you could also call a local mosque and ask them which way the Qibla is in Pennsylvania.

- mustangmike53, on 05/04/2008, -4/+16Crescent of Embrace? The word "Multiculturalist" will surely someday be remembered as representing something as vile and hateful as the word "Nazi" is today. A mother embraces a child, a lover embraces their loved one, and a python embraces its victim. In which manner do you suppose this particular Crescent embraced the passengers of Flight 93?
- DesertDad, on 05/04/2008, -3/+12When we had courage and focus as a nation, we erected fitting monuments. The one at Saratoga, NY, is poignant in that it acknowledges the astonishing wisdom and bravery of the American officer who assured the victory without ever using his name. Omitting his name was because of his subsequent treason. In like manner, the graduates of West Point who wore Confederate grey are not memorialized at the academy.
Yet here we are seven years after the most damnable assault on our nation and we toy with memorializing the event using the jihadist's most revered symbol? Curse the philosophical slime who came up with that design. Let them go build shrines to themselves elsewhere.
Let's see state flags for each of the innocent American passengers and crew, and national flags for each of the innocent international passengers and crew. Subordinate to these, it would be fitting and instructive to fly flags of their faiths as well, for their faiths gave them strength to protect our capitol.
A cross would be appropriate, even if as a stylized silhouette of the aircraft, perhaps at impact. This could be erect, perhaps at the angle of impact, or laid out in stone as a walkway. If the flags of faith are not flown, then crosses, stars of David, buddhas, etc. appropriate to the innocent passenger’s and crews’ faiths could be erected.
As a minimum, the religious symbols should be displayed on the plaques, headstones, or other monuments bearing the names of the innocent victims.
To the ACLU and others who take offense, get over it. These innocents were the victims of a religion-inpsired assault, and should be honored and revered for their own peacable faiths. That is paramount for our children and our children’s children to understand. If you cannot accept that, you cannot accept the Holocaust memorials nor recognize the hateful shame in all acts of slaughter of innocents. - caccia, on 05/04/2008, -1/+9Would be interested in any follow-ups on this story.
- bigot, on 05/05/2008, -4/+11This goes to show the insanity of the politically correct. When they want to include the murdering islam sluts in a momorial to the people they murdered, its time for them to seek mental help. Our country has turnwed into a bunch of compassionate pussies. Thank you NEA for your contribution to the decline and fall of a once brave nation.
- m1cobra, on 05/05/2008, -4/+7Wait Just a Second! These people are cold blooded killers! And once again to not "hurt" Some evil entities "FEELINGS" Because they kill with glee. What Asinine Moronic, Baboon, wouldeven go a micro close to anything ISLAMIC,
Unless this was another deliberate ploy to let the Muslims know they won. Because they died?
Its quite apparent more needs to be eliminated, or there would be "NO" discussion on the subject of dicating a a memorial to heroes.
The Muslims will never be a hero, nor will any person who does not honor the USA, ANd our flag. That goes for scabs, - novaculus, on 05/05/2008, -3/+9Check out this link and review archived articles:

There is not simply Islamic crescent symbolism. The essential elements of a mosque are present in the design, including a prayer-time sundial. As for including symbols memorializing the terrorist murderers, it is absolutely despicable.
Why are authorities so determined to go forward with a design so controversial?- keltin, on 05/05/2008, -1/+7Muslim mosques are being found in the strangest places. At the San Diego airport there is a section where the taxis stage out of before going to pick people up at the gates. In this area one recreation building has been converted to be used as a mosque, with prayer mats, a nearby water faucet for washing feet, etc.
This is at property owned by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (SDCRAA). You'd think they should be censured for promoting one religion over others...but no; the Imam is even an employee of the Authority. Sounds like something the ACLU should look into? Don't bet on it. Any conservative law groups out there who can get involved?

- mr100percent, on 05/05/2008, -7/+2Everyone, this controversy is simply inaccurate, and shows me how little Americans know about Muslims. Any practicing Muslim will tell you that the Qiba (the direction that muslims face to pray) is Northeast in America, since the shortest distance to Mecca is over Europe (check a globe if you don't believe me). This link may help: http://www.moonsighting.com/qibla.html If I use Philadelphia as the closest city, the Qibla is facing northeast: http://www.islamicfinder.org/prayerDetail.php?coun ...
This memorial is pointing Southeast. The controversy is, like I said, simply inaccurate. - DesertDad, on 05/05/2008, -0/+7Mr100percent
The controversy is not inaccurate. You presume the average American will look at this image and care to know the geodetic implications of whether it fulfills the strictures of the Qibla. When the average American looks on a cross or a star of David, its significance is not borne by the direction the viewer is facing. The significance is in the image itself.
It completely misses the point to argue that the architect and the Park Service have the monument matching the lay of the land. They could have it pointed at the nearest Starbucks, and it still appears as a crescent and star. That is a disgusting outrage. We may as well have the Union Jack flying from the Washington Monument, or the Nazi swastika flying over Arlington.
The design is an affront to our national sensibilities, and a delight to the culture which spawned the cowardly killers. That the architect and the National Park Service argue otherwise is a testament to their insensitivity and shame.- mr100percent, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1You presume that the average American will see a semicircle or crescent and immediately think Islam. When you stare at the moon, is that what comes to your mind? The point is, the crescent isn't exactly an Islamic symbol (I know some flags use it, but some others like Saudi Arabia and Libya don't) and it's not facing Mecca (it would if you assumed the world was flat).
If you're on some campaign to ban crescents and semicircles, or willing to spend massive amounts of money to terraform the land because you hate the fact that God shaped it in a crescent-form, be my guest.

- cageybee, on 05/05/2008, -3/+2the signs shouldn't be Islamic - they should be Saudi Arabian - a state that truly sponsors terrorism. Weren't the Saudi's the hijackers???
- keltin, on 05/05/2008, -3/+6The hijackers are muslim terrorists, no matter the national citizenry. They more thought of themselves as belonging to an international resistance group against western imperialism (sound familiar, like the Communist Party?).
Saudi Arabia just has a lot of people who fund Leftists and Terrorists, kind of like a guy named Soros.- cageybee, on 05/05/2008, -3/+2leftists are the good guys - the right according to the dictionary are the bad guys - read about far right - fascists. do you even understand the principples of communism (far left)??? perhaps if you understood the principles of communism, you would think the same way about imperialism. go read!

- cageybee, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1look, there is no social equality and no absolute liberty in the US. i don't need to read about it - i live in US. people ae separated in classes, nationalism is high, racism is still alive, troops fighting for oil monopolies, old corupted government (more like very oganized mafia), people are being bainwashed hardcore, media magnates use MSM as political weapons and use bainwashing propaganda techniques to manipulate people's opinions. this is nothing new in US either. a group of very rich people - the elite - runs the show. business is the life of a capitalist nation. big business runs the show. in FASCIST states, government is on the side of businesses. in COMMUNIST states, the government is on the side of the people.
governments that are hard on businesses which force businesses to pay for the well being of the people are more left or should i say close to being a communist state.
governments that are easy on businesses which in turn forces governments to be hard on people through excessive taxation are on the right. if the government goes ahead and sends troops to Iraq for example because Iraq wants to sell its oil for a different curency other than a US dollar, then this government is very disrespectful to other country's sovereignty, has no respect or regard for people of Iraq, people at home, and its soldiers. this same kind of government was prosecuted once by the international tribunal for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the nuremberg trials. we all know who we're talking about. this same government, my friend, is all the way to the right - the FASCISTS.
in USSR, we had none of this *****.- Stevanoski, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2Cage, typical Leftist argument, never to bring everyone up to the same level, your solution is to all ways bring everyone down to the same level, re: USSR.
