Opium: Iraq's Newest Export

counterpunch.org — Farmers in southern Iraq have started to grow opium poppies in their fields for the first time, sparking fears that Iraq might become a serious drugs producer along the lines of Afghanistan.

I mean what kind of ***** do you have to be smoking to come up with flying carpets and genies that come out of dirty old lamps after you rub them? Seriously though, this is hardly the first time they've done this. Just probably the first time in the 'modern era.'

      Are you one of that dying breed of idiots who still believes American intervention in Iraq was intended to "help" the "poor Iraqis" or are you that less evolved type who thinks the "backwards", "uncivilized" Iraqis rejected the "American gift" of death and destruction ("democracy" and "freedoms" in your naive parlance)?

      I mean what kind of dumb, knuckle-dragging bastard reduces one of the most fanciful and widely-appreciated stories of all time to "flying carpets and genies that come out of dirty lamps"? The same kind fed on Disney and other ***** fantasies (like the one about Uncle Sam being a force for good in the world). Idiot, Aladdin was introduced to the Western world by way of Syria in the 18th century. It was then rehashed, in various forms, in the Western world, including once by a Danish playwright.

      Now, I could go on and on about Iraq's contributions to human society, but since YOU'RE the expert, why don't YOU tell us about the "long" history of opium usage in Iraq?
  • RightHand, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Drugs growing seem to follow a certain 'liberation' army about the globe. Anyone notice.Drugs growing had ceased virtually in Afghanistan under the Taliban until 'liberation' arrived.
