One Protest, 52 Arrests and a $2 Million Payout
nytimes.com — The city of New York has agreed to pay $2,007,000 to end a lawsuit brought by 52 people who were swept up in a mass arrest along a Midtown sidewalk during a protest against the invasion of Iraq.

This is unfortunate. There should be real consequences for all of the hasty police officers who arrested them. Otherwise, this type of behavior is implicitly condoned and destined to continue.
If an officer thought, "If I arrest this protester without cause, I might lose a week or two of pay or be suspended," he might think twice about the policy of "arrest now, work out the details later."
The police have lost respect for the law, and replaced it with internal groupthink.
