- DesignNerd, on 08/08/2008, -1/+1that's because the games have not started yet.
also: world development (basic human rights) is more important than the individual
hey I kind of sound like China!- dtelepathy, on 08/08/2008, -1/+1I agree that human rights are more important than the Olympic sports, and I am all for freedom of speech and bringing attention to the situation. Just saying I hope the athletes, and other countries get some recognition too.
- DesignNerd, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2They won't, it's in China.

So you probably one of those guys that thinks professional sports players in the US deserve all that money, fame and notoriety? Personally I think an educator that can teach a student to learn for themselves, or a scientist that enriches human kind should receive all the monies and accolades. If I wasn't going to Warped Tour today to be among others pushing for sustainability, DIY and recycling you can damn well be sure I'd be on the side of the road with a sign. Just don't forget a famous athlete can have a positive mesage, which is a good thing. But in the end he's still just a guy that excelled at PE and now gets paid to manipulate a ball one way or another. Offering nothing to the world as whole while they sit on the field.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 08/08/2008, -2/+1Professional sports players _do_ deserve all that money; that's not to say that scientists and teachers shouldn't get paid more as well, but those aren't mutually exclusive goals like you seem to imply. That sports stars deserve their salary is an undeniable fact - it's market economics - they do things that most other people can't, and high demand plus low supply sets a market equilibrium that works.
Let's remember that these players are on teams that can bring in millions of dollars a year to a city, along with tourism, related jobs, and pride and happiness too. Merely saying they "manipulate a ball" and get paid millions is purposefully ignoring the much larger picture and is disingenuous to the discussion at hand.

- wishninja, on 08/09/2008, -1/+2I some way, its sad I know, but I think setting yourself on fire seems kind of lame now compared to what those crazy Arabs are doing to protest.
I mean dude set himself on fire and it didn't even get his name printed in the story. He didn't exactly succeed I hope he isn't so bad off. - drgmdp, on 08/09/2008, -1/+1meanwhile, chinese people from around the world don't understand why all the hate
- chicofaraby, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4I have a hard time getting upset about China's abysmal human rights record when I live a a nation that tortures and murders people just like China does.
- luke16, on 08/09/2008, -1/+1Hey John, you going out to protest today?
Yeah, im gunna set myself on fire. Then i'll get loads of attention.
Don't you think that's kinda dangerous. I mean....you could die.
Yea but i would get my point across right?
No, you'll just set yourself on fire and China will keep on being China.
..but...like...GOD DAMN YOU JEFF, YOU'RE ALWAYS DOUBTING ME!!! *lights self on fire*
