- Fleagleman, on 07/16/2009, -2/+68Gave birth at age 66, raising questions about maternity so late in life, then dies 3 years later.
I think those questions were just answered. - buddypriefert, on 07/16/2009, -2/+63Perfect example of being "irresponsibly selfish" and the consequences of such.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+34FTA-
Sahakian said he implanted the Spanish woman with a younger woman's eggs and donated sperm, using hormone therapy to "rejuvenate" her uterus after she had been in menopause for 18 years.
That's what I was thinking. How the hell she was still ovulating? - jupaneanu, on 07/16/2009, -5/+3269 is actually not that early an age to go, she should have thought her decision through
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -5/+32And that's why you don't have kids when you're essentially already a corpse.
I worked as a camp counselor maybe seven years ago, and there was one kid in my group whose father had to be at least 60. I couldn't help but thinking, there's a good chance that poor child won't have a dad by the time he's a teenager. - satanherself, on 07/16/2009, -2/+25There is a reason why women go through menopause. Don't ***** with nature.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+18Babazoz, let's think about this for a moment. Why is it, do you think, that she went through the natural process of menopause and cessation of ovulation?
I'm going to guess that's nature's way of discretely telling you, "Hey, so, having a kid at this point may not be a viable or reasonable option for you." - Po0py, on 07/16/2009, -0/+17I really don't want to think abou this.
- TerekKincaid, on 07/16/2009, -12/+28Stupid bitch.
- CrexisNX, on 07/16/2009, -5/+20What an absolutely incomprehensibly selfish woman. I mourn her loss in that her children will be without a parent, but count them lucky to spared her inevitable plan to become the first septuagenarian to have a child.
Like Carl Jr.'s "***** you, I'm eating," she coined you, "***** the kid's welfare - I want one!" - jdames1980, on 07/16/2009, -9/+23Selfish old hag.
- jimbo92107, on 07/16/2009, -1/+14Maybe their grandmother...
Oh.
Nevermind... - iconoclysm, on 07/16/2009, -5/+18It was a disgrace to the medical community. I'm honestly angrier at her greedy moronic doctors than at her own idiocy. They at least KNEW better.
The majority of my emotions however, consist of sadness and sympathy for the poor kids left behind. - CrexisNX, on 07/16/2009, -1/+14Don't be deliberately obtuse. A 31 year, on the vast average, doesn't have as many bullets in the chamber for Russian roulette. Granmom here pretty much had 6 bullets in the revolver.
- drinking12many, on 07/16/2009, -1/+12I think it comes down to one thought.... "just because we can do something doesnt mean we should"
Doctors ethics on these kinds of issues amaze me. Sure I can get you pregnant but the risks are so high at her age that should have been enough to stop the doctor from implanting her.
We have to start really examining items that while technically possible shouldnt be done for ethical reasons. Im by no means the person to decide that but in this case as a doctor I would have been like "Hell no" - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 07/16/2009, -5/+15We do what me must because we can.
- nutzngum, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10my father was 54 when i was born. He was there for all my milestones, and lived to be 93 (and he was healthy and active pretty much until the end). While he may be the exception and not the rule, don't assume that because a man is over 40 when he has his first child that he's robbing them of something.
/force-creating a baby in a 60+ year old woman who's already gone through menopause is another story altogether....even if she had lived to be 80, those kids would have been without a mom just as they hit their teens. Very sad. - Rudegar, on 07/16/2009, -2/+12so what ?
better to have fond memories of an old dad that loved you
or no dad at all or a looser dad - dgendreau, on 07/16/2009, -1/+11Exactly! Fertility clinics destroy 100x more fertilized eggs than abortion clinics, but you never see psychos protesting infront of them. Total hipocrisy.
- poppipop, on 07/16/2009, -0/+9i am not a motherly type so perhaps i don't understand, but surely, if you want a child at that age, wouldn't it be better for everyone to foster a 10-year-old? irresponsible, both her and the clinic (even though they claim they didn't know)

- Rain12913, on 07/16/2009, -5/+14Wow, you're really ***** smart aren't you? You're completely missing the point, which is that people who are older are more likely to die than younger people. As Chuck Palahniuk says in Fight Club, on a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero. This woman was 66 years old, and as a person of that age she faced much more severe health risks, and therefore an increased likelihood of death, than a 31 year old. 31 year olds, for example, rarely die of stomach cancer. On the other hand, if this woman had her children at the age of 31, they would have been in their late 30's when she died, rather than 3 years old.
- NZN444, on 07/16/2009, -2/+10People like this should have diseases named after them.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -2/+10i like how its ok to implant eggs into a sterilized woman to make her preggo, and thats not playing god... but holy ***** if you have an early abortion and kill a cluster of cells, THATS WRONG.

- unwiseone, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8I'd agree with you except for one qualification - people always want children for the sake of having children, nothing new there.
Remember folks, just because you can do something, doesn't make it a good idea. - JFitzpatrick, on 07/16/2009, -2/+9That's a silly argument.
My daughter is 3. My wife is 28. My wife's statistical probability (especially given her extremely healthy workout routine and eating habits) of death in the next 15 years (the time it will take for my daughter to become a legal adult) is extremely low.
If she was 69, the probability of her death before our daughter became a legal adult would be extremely high.
That *is* something to take into *serious* consideration when deciding whether or not to have children. - nutzngum, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7with all due respect, from what I've read, she had stopped producing eggs when she went into menopause, and had a donor egg implanted. This was not a naturally-occurring situation.
- Tenareth, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7Wow, reading comprehension is not your strong suit.
- clankster, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6"Due to her advanced age, she will give birth to grown ups"
- unwiseone, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6The eggs and sperm were donated and she underwent hormone therapy to get pregnant. This was no miracle of god, science and selfishness wrought this tragedy,
- Rain12913, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7"Young or old, people can get cancer and die. I find it irrelevant how old she was IN THIS CASE."
Really, you find it irrelevant? Are you claiming that risk of cancer does not increase with age?
"She had a pretty good reason to think she had a lot of time left (barring something awful... like CANCER)"
Cancer is certainly awful, but it is not some kind of unexpected accident that never could have been predicted. In fact, the very reason that women her age are not allowed do this is because they're more prone to cancer and other age-appropriate ailments. According to the American Cancer Society, 37% of women will get cancer at some point in their lifetime, and 20% will die from it. The vast majority of these woman are older. - xsecretfiles, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5"We don't ask for passports, obviously. When is the last time you went to a doctor and he asked you for a birth certificate? We're not detectives here,"
...but they ask for Social Security, ID's and whatnot.............. - vanguardanon, on 07/16/2009, -5/+10On the other hand her mother had just lived to 101 so it's not that crazy for her to think that she had a lot more than 3 years left in her after childbirth. The situation is sad.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5People who do stupid things in life aren't granted a pass just because they die.
- mikeliketrike, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6Patton Oswalt was right.
- asnider, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5I don't understand why a 66-year-old woman would even *want* to have children that late in life. Raising kids takes a lot of energy and even if she did survive to be 100, she just wouldn't have the energy of someone in their 20s or 30s (you know, the age when *normal* people decide to have kids).
- CrexisNX, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6For the good of all of us -
- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5She went into menoresume.
- fahrenheitlf, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5except the ones who are dead
- asnider, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Late 20s, early 30s. Whatever. Point is, normal people don't have kids when they're in their 60s.
- Gerz1219, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4It's a good thing you're not an actuary, Babazoz.
- jsainz, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4its selfish
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -5/+9Silly woman, abortion is the OTHER way!
- digifuzz, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Somebody set up us the bomb.
- ShingoEX, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5What an idiot.
- ShingoEX, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4I'm not showing disrespect for the children at all. They had nothing to do with their idiot mother's idea to have kids at her age.
- Izikoo, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Nice self-ownage there Fleagleman. Rain was responding to Babazoz.
- TerekKincaid, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Well, in the doctors' defense, she did lie to them, even going so far to provide a fake birth certificate. Like the doc in the story says, they're not detectives, they can only do so much to verify.
