Official: Child Singer Not Pretty Enough for Olympics Opener
foxnews.com — China uses a body double for the 7-year-old singer at the 2008 Summer Games. How shallow. Good to know that the girl they showed didn't really sing-let's ask 'Vanilla Ice' how that lip-sync gig works out for ya.

Uhhh...wake up and take a look at what our media throws at us every day. - StealthMonkey, on 08/12/2008, -1/+8and that is one of the huge problems we face right now. File a lawsuit first, ask questions never.
- phatphat, on 08/12/2008, -2/+7This does happen in the U.S. Just look at Nobama's use of the teleprompter for speeches written by someone else. Why are we not nominating the speech writer instead of the empty suit (body double)?

- ProLifeWoman, on 08/12/2008, -5/+8Oh please! We do this in the US everyday! Have you seen any "ugly" children or adults on our magazines and in our commercials and on our reality shows? On our "talent shows and American Idols type shows??? We exploit our children as much if not more that any other country in the world. I mean think about it...if we don't want them we abort them. If they are not perfect, we abort them. If they weren't "planned" we abort them. We want the perfect child and we are willing to make it legal to kill them if they are not.
Besides this IS China people. A communist country? Remember? No one is free there. No one.
Get over it and realize that as long as we continue to buy products and services from the Chinese and not from our own country they will always have the power. Those are just the facts.- Queenwemo, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6Not necessarily true, remember Milli-Vanilli? How long did they last, with their pretty faces, when everyone found out they weren't singing?
And PS - not everyone aborts 'the unwanted child' - some of us are responsible enough to register for adoption!
All the 'talent-show' crap is the fault of narcissistic parents who are living thru their child, whether the child wants it or not. - TheCatsPants, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1"A communist country? Remember? No one is free there"
What do you mean by 'free'? If you had your way you'd make the world a little less 'free'.

- momofour, on 08/12/2008, -2/+4Overlooked detail in the story: the 'performer' is already a celebrity--has been used in commercials, etc. Smells of nepotism...favoritism...that kind of thing. But remember not to look at this situation through "American" colored glasses. Their culture is nothing like ours.
They couldn't really voice disapproval if they wanted to. Personally, the girl with the voice looks fine--not like she has some horrible disfiguration. She is snaggle toothed, what 7 year old isn't?! But who really cares, except that it does seem like it is 'news' that it was one girl onstage and another girl's voice. Why not just say so in the first place...THAT would be b/c you KNOW that people won't approve...otherwise you'd just say so. - bjryder, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5For the West to criticize this is totally hypocritical, considering the way we set up "pretty" stars to act in the movies but use a "real" singer. Think Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and lots of others.
- Queenwemo, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6The problem is China thinks that the World is fooled by their sleight of hand tactics, and 'blanket maneuvers" such as not letting journalists into the Western Provinces, because the Chinese can't really control the people.
It doesn't matter what they PRESENT, because everyone knows that China is a dictatorial oligarchy where the citizens have no rights and discussion (of anything) is tantamount to diabolic treason. They can "Super Power" all they want to, when it comes down to popular opinion - China builds garbage to break - clothing/shoes with bad seams that pop when you breathe, brittle plastics goods that shatter with minimal use; and does not regulate their agriculture - exporting potentially deadly comestibles, nonfunctional or weakened materials, and poison-laced medicines.
Everyone knows that the Japanese have the Asian Exports Market cornered - and they make good stuff!! - ladyjusa, on 08/12/2008, -2/+4There is also the controversy over the chinese gymnists. They must be 16 or older to participate, and some of the girls barely look 12, though teir passport says they are 16.
- drachemorder, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3Frankly I would have been very much surprised if the Chinese WEREN'T cheating. This is a despotic government obsessed with spreading propaganda to polish up its image abroad. They'll do anything they think they can get away with to further that goal.

Everything you said is true and I admire you for using adoption over murder. It shows TRUE unselfish behavior and pure love for anothier humanbeing..... however it doesn't erase the fact that what I said is plain fact. Our country exploits our young people for cash. The good ole USA uses our "pretty" young people (boys and girls) to sell everything from sexy lingerie, music, cars to toothpaste.
You are right to say that not everyone aborts their unwanted, imperfect children but at the rate of 2000-3000 per day I would say that as a country we have nothing to point our fingers at. Nothing.- randf, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4moral equivalency between the US which "exploits" young people in commercials (paid for their efforts) and chinese perfectionist officials b/c they wanted the perfect face to match the the perfect vocals in their "open olympics"? and using abortion as to compare and contrast? a poor choice in comparison.
criticising countries that provide abortions under clinical conditions is nothing compared to a government that sponsors something like the "one child policy". that govt mandate had all kinds of nasty side effects: "Many argue that the one-child policy induces many families to use selective abortion, abandon female infants, and even kill female infants under the influence of the son preference. Some families even kill or starve the female infant and then try again for a male child."
i say that as a country we may have some issues, but we haven't sunk to such despicable measures as dictating birthing rights to the entire population.- ProLifeWoman, on 08/12/2008, -3/+0There is no difference. A baby is dead. HOW he or she got that way really doesn't matter. And as for the matter of abortion...it ties into everything. A country that does not value human life is a country that will exploit it's citizens and destroy itself. We are headed in that very direction. China has just has longer to work at it!

- sethdesantis, on 08/12/2008, -2/+2dugg for the article, but the description listed sucks
- Ghostman555, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1 This reminds me of the exploitation of kids, like in , "Beauty contests." Snaggleteeth? No way, you can't win that way here. I watched a show on HBO a couple of years ago. To be a real compeditor, they use "cover teeth". Just slip them in, and an eight year old has perfectly capped teeth. If the need arrise's the children are exploited. Doesn't matter where you are in this day and time......Shame isn't it? I wonder how that little girl felt when she was replaced? Broken heart? Well, in China, you better not show a broken heart.........Or any Commie country for that matter...........................I do agree with a lot of subjects, "The QUEEN" brings out. The truth set's us all free......................Ghostman
- kitsua, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I was gonna submit the Guardian's coverage of this story and found that there was at least 15 others already submitted.
Why do people submit the same story if it's already been done? Why not accept the fact that someone else got there first and digg that story instead? - inajeep, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Oh the humanity of it all.
