Officer Acquitted of Killing Unarmed Mom
news.aol.com — A white police officer was acquitted in the drug-raid shooting death of an unarmed black woman that set off protests about how police treat minorities in a city where one in four residents is black. The all-white jury found Sgt. Joseph Chavalia not guilty of misdemeanor charges of negligent homicide and negligent assault.

- morningmatters, on 08/06/2008, -0/+16The verdict implies that it's okay for cops to have trigger finger and kill anyone they please as long as they are on a mission.
- pintomp3, on 08/07/2008, -1/+1correction: as long as the victim is black.
- smotpoker1, on 08/06/2008, -0/+14this crap needs to go higher up and those police need to be jailed for manslaughter.
- FrankHope, on 08/07/2008, -0/+13If a cop does it, then it's legal. If anyone else killed someone in a similar circumstance, they would be locked up.
The prosecutor said, "He couldn't tell Tarika had a child in her arms." When I first read that, I thought it was a statement from the defense attorney. When it's a cop, he is presumed innocent. Anyone else is presumed guilty. - roosevans, on 08/07/2008, -3/+3The thought of any mother being killed in front of her children for any reason is very painful. In my opinion, this was a tragic accident committed by a scared cop, not a racist cop. Why didn't the mother cry out and let the cop know she was with her children? Why was she in a relationship with a dope dealer? Will this cop ever be able to sleep at night? Will the surviving children ever be able to sleep at night? In my opinion, no crime was committed, just another tragic accident.
- FrankHope, on 08/07/2008, -0/+4Even if you kill someone by accident while driving, you will be guilty of manslaughter. The use of SWAT teams to pick up people on warrants is the cause of this sad death. They should have known that there was a girlfriend and a child in the apartment. Didn't they do any surveillance before busting down the door? This is inexcusable.
- MarkEarhart, on 08/07/2008, -1/+3Cops, or anyone else who commit such unspeakable crimes should be executed before a firing squad. I don't care what color they are either.
- Fangsinmybeard, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2I'm sure he now has a huge ass bulls eyes painted on his back now that he's been acquitted. Now he'll go into hiding paid for by our tax dollars into the black hole of the federal witless perfection program.
- ParthShah, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I don't know. It seemed like an accident, but it's a shame that the police department did not at least admit a mistake.
- Truzseeker, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I'm surprised that the feds are not involved yet. Some cops got off in Los Angeles only later to be indicted and convicted of civil rights violations in federal court. That's the problem with state courts - they protect their own.
