worldnetdaily.com — Christians will face prison for speaking out against homosexuality if Brazil's Senate passes a bill approved unanimously by its House of Representatives. The measure is considered the country's newest attempt to promote homosexuality, disguised as an act to prevent discrimination, the Catholic News Agency reports.

      • Cate320, on 07/17/2008, -1/+10He meant (I think) that if there is legitimate grounds for not hiring someone ( something NOT having to do with their sexual orientation), that employers do not have to hire them. If such a legitimate reason exists, it should be easy enough to prove.

Not hiring an openly gay person or an openly straight person for their ability to do a job is how business works, not unfair discrimination, and not dangerous.

        I'm saying it's ridiculous to think that because you think someone is unqualified for the job based on skills, and they happen to be gay, black, or female, that they will sue you for discrimination claiming you didn't hire them BECAUSE they were gay, black or female, and win.

        She sued him for racial discrimination and WON. She got so much cash that she pretty much cleaned the guy out. I'm not sure, but he might have gone out of business as a result.
        Never mind that there were only a handful of whites in that place -- the vast majority of employees were various ethnicities other than white, and they backed up their boss in court, but the judge bought the lie. You need to look at character when you hire, and that need transcends race, religion and sexual preference.

        But I agree, you need to look at character, and their ability to do the job, which typically doesn't relate to race, religion, gender, or sexual preference.

Laws were created to protect people from companies discriminating against them because of these attributes. One has to wonder the validity of a law to prevent discrimination against something that shouldn't even be observable in an interview. What is the definition of "openly gay"? There is no box on application forms that ask you for sexual orientation so how does an employer even determine if someone is gay or not unless the candidate makes it a point to declare their sexual orientation. In this case it is pretty clear that homosexuals are making their sexual orientation more of a conflict than heterosexuals are. How would you ever prove that someone wasn't hired because they were gay especially when sexual orientation isn't part of an interview process.

        Next there will be affirmative action for homosexuals and companies will be forced to hire "openly gay" people regardless of the job skills they possess.
      • Cate320, on 07/19/2008, -2/+1Well, some people seem to think that they can tell the difference between a homosexual and heterosexual on a purely superficial level. I think they are probably more often wrong than right, but laws like that have to exist to protect people from that kind of discrimination. "Openly Gay" probably, to bigots means effeminate men or "butch" women. The employer can't tell for sure unless the candidate makes it clear, but that wouldn't stop them from making a judgment anyway. Rjwusa in another post in this thread said he finds a reason to prevent hiring someone if his "gaydar" goes off. The law is to protect potential employees from people like him. Even if the topic is never approached in the hiring process, it still may come out while the person is employed. This protects them from being fired because of it as well.

        Affirmative action doesn't necessarily have to follow (and I hope it doesn't!). I would certainly speak out against affirmative action for homosexuals, since I don't agree with it's existence for minorities and women either.

As far as the employment protection, it is the same thing that we have in this country based on age, gender, race, and in most states sexual orientation: you cannot keep someone from getting a job solely based on those reasons

        Saying when you think someone is gay, you can always find some reason to hide behind to not hire them (where you wouldn't do the same in others), is unfair discrimination. The same if you did it based on race or gender.

In fact, I have a friend who almost certainly would have registered on your gaydar. He's a brilliant programmer and is happily married . . . to a woman who's expecting their first child. You couldn't ask for a more honest, ethical, hard working employee. For some reason, though, people seem to assume he's gay.

        Making assumptions about a person's character based only on your best guess as to his or her sexual orientation may be causing you to lose out on quality applicants. I also find it amusing that your gaydar would cause you to reject homosexuals who, for better or for worse, are committed to changing their sexual orientation. Someone in that position probably shares far more of your values than the average random applicant.

        That is the beauty in the concept of freedom of association. If I don't want to hire someone, or rent them a house, be it because they are deviant, female, socialist or ugly, that is my Right to do. The market will decide who survives in the business world.         No it isn't, not in America. Whites had that right not too long ago and they colluded against blacks to deny them jobs and a livelihood. Blacks were forced to live as second class citizens because whites had the 'right' to exclude them from commerce.

        Read about Adam Smith's 'invisible hand' and John Maynard Keynes opinion of it. Not every decision made by consumers, as a whole, is necessarily beneficial to society. Read about the 'paradox of thrift' and you'll find that the mere fear of recession can drive a growing economy into recession.

        Most economists agree that the state should correct for the failures of consumers. This is why there are anti-discrimination laws, because it's harmful to the economy and society. Don't believe me? Just open up a history book or take an international political economy class.

Which, of course, is not always true, as in the example of I gave of my friend who tends to set off people's gaydars despite the fact that he's not gay, doesn't make his sexuality an issue, and is a decent person of strong character.

        We have two kids and live in the country here in Australia. Our sexuality isn't 'traditional', whatever that might mean. But we run a successful local business, and deal with people from all walks of life. We are accepted in the local community for who we are, we hire based on skill and work ethic.
        My electrician is part of a religious community called the brethren, he is one of the nicest people I know, and like most other people, he is nonjudgmental. Accepting all types of different people is easy if they offer that same acceptance.

      I'd be very careful wanting the government to make such stupid laws. The government wants power and money, and the only reason they care about anything is because of who throws money at them, or a way they can take more power away from us and give it to government. We have already lost everything we held dear. Our rights, our money, being able to make our own descisions about our own business, etc..

      It sets a precedent that WILL wind up going against YOUR beliefs too.

        Read the article yourself and you won't need to issue a Digg Challenge. The body of the article is about imprisonment for violating the rights of homosexuals. No where in the article, besides the title, does it even mention the word offend or offense. So, yeah, the WND title _IS_ a lie.

        There's no way to know if a person is anti-gay rights/anti-Christian unless they vocalize it in some manner. If, in an interview, I said, "your organization sucks and I hope it fails", then I'd expect not to get the job. Not only that, I'd have no leg to stand on if I filed a lawsuit.

People can refuse to hire individual Hells Angels for various reasons, just not because of their skin color, sexual preference, religious choice or gender. If you interview a transvestite for a position at a men's clothing store you should mention that the attire is suit & tie. If the transvestite refuses then you can exclude them from being hired. No crime committed.

        As for discrimination I think the government shouldn't be able to discriminate, but it is just dead wrong and fascist to tell someone who they can choose to have work for them or patronize their business. Where does that end. Will I one day face fines and jail time because I don't have enough friends who are gay, because I didn't invite a gay or lesbian in my workplace to say my wedding or child's graduation party?

        I didn't read that, because I didn't see anywhere in there what Brazil's laws for anti-discrimination against race, ethnicity, religion, gender, etc. are. But it needs to boil down to equal rights, not special rights. If it's special rights, then we need to address that it should be on par with race and others, or that others need to be on par with sexual orientation.

        I don't think it's dead wrong to tell someone they can't choose to hire people based on their skin color, or their gender, or their religion, or their sexual orientation.

        You won't ever face jailtime because you don't have black, gay, female, or jewish friends, so don't fear it going that far.

        Smart and creative people (regardless of sexual orientation) have concluded that sexual orientation is not a psychological disorder.

        With the help of many closeted and heterosexual Christians, a small percentage of gays that have gone through aversion therapy for their homosexuality has not changed their feelings to heterosexuality, but caused them to fear or hate their homosexual desires enough to be repulsed by them. And they still have them. Many revert after the fear or hate of themselves wears thin.

    It's high time for us as Christians in America to decide whether we are going to remain pacifistic or stand up for the inalienable rights we still enjoy under the Constitution to speak publically against lifestyles and religions with which we do not agree.
