Obituary: Joerg Haider
news.bbc.co.uk — To his supporters Joerg Haider was a patriot who dared to speak uncomfortable truths. His critics saw him as an ambitious, racist opportunist who used anti-immigrant and pro-Nazi rhetoric to stir up populist sentiment. He described World War II concentration camps as "punishment camps" and said the Nazi SS was a part of the German army.

- MacBookForMe, on 10/11/2008, -5/+5Wow, how I hated that nationalistic scum! He was a Nazi, yes. ....no worries, I'm forgiving him...he's harmless, now
- Bhima, on 10/11/2008, -2/+3This is very wrong thinking. All of Haider's type are harmless. It's the unwashed masses that follow these assholes and give them power that are dangerous. I don't know if you've been paying attention but we've just had an election and the ring-wing parties did very well for themselves... around 30%. Lots of folks say that this was a protest vote but I don't agree with that, there are plenty of other minor parties in Austria to vote for with out supporting militant bigotry: The Greens, The Communists... hell even the Piratenpartei Österreichs (which would be a hell of a protest vote). This is a guilt free bigotry vote... They voted with their ugly fear and hate and got to blame that vote on Molterer and Faymann... or the SPÖ and ÖVP in general.
Now, I wonder if it really was a just personality conflict which kept the BZÖ and the FPÖ apart and what Stracher is planning on right now.- drmobutu, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1From the BBC article:
"In a general election last month both the Freedom Party and the Alliance did better than expected, gaining almost 30% and there has been speculation that they might enter the new governing coalition.
Some analysts now believe that with the death of Mr Haider, there may be attempts to reunite the two parties of the far right in Austria - a move that could considerable strengthen their political power."
Are they sure it was an accident?
