- dagnabbit, on 06/05/2009, -21/+124Boy the nutjobs got to this one quick. It's like Jon Stewart said, conservatives were glad to march in lockstep when went to war, but they draw the line at conversation.
- nalguita, on 06/05/2009, -11/+87I support what he is doing. This is what we need in this world, extending a hand out to those who do not like us in hopes of forming relationships. Look at the example we're setting, America reaches out, thats the kind of message I want. Not what these dumb ***** from Fox news and everyone who watches it believe. Go Mr. President go!
- miffelplix, on 06/05/2009, -9/+64Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
- Phearce, on 06/05/2009, -10/+51RTA. He is focusing on fixing the US. One of our (many) problems is that we have been stressing the differences between the Middle East and America. Everybody agrees that we have differences. Let's move on. In order to work *together* to fight terrorism we must find our common ground, and build on that. That would be a first step to "fixing THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA PERIOD".
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -13/+50I know for a fact that I'm not the only one who doesn't care what you think.
- briLo, on 06/05/2009, -4/+38Wow......I hope that was an attempt at humor.......if not, ask for your college/university for your money back.
You didn't learn anything and appear to be very ignorant still. - ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/04/2009, -4/+37Did you actually listen to the speech or read the transcript? You might learn something if you did.
- nsanidy, on 06/05/2009, -4/+37Wow, there are some poorly thought out comments on here.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -6/+30omgzors, how dare you quote the bible of the so called christian right-wingers to prove them to be the hypocrites that they are.
- V3n0M, on 06/05/2009, -3/+27The best way to change our foreign perception is to change our foreign policy!

- mtjohnson, on 06/05/2009, -6/+24Unfortunately we have a lot to apologize for.
- lindenwold, on 06/05/2009, -5/+23As a critic of many of Obama's policies, I thought that he did a good job with this speech. I wasn't a fan of everything he said, and would appreciate him being a bit more "Pro America", but the overall message was clear and concise.
I do not think that Obama would have a hard time changing perceptions of many Muslim people, and many people of the US. However, changing the mindset of some leaders is where he will most likely fall short, and that is where I think he is being dangerously naive. - muzfuz, on 06/05/2009, -5/+23All your comments suck, and get dugg down into oblivion.
You should quit digg. - inactive, on 06/05/2009, -5/+23Just think if we had a president like this for the past 8 years, we'd be in at least 1 less war. If not any at this point. We'd have a ***** less people plotting our demise.
- WraTH017, on 06/05/2009, -3/+20Because dropping bombs and creating a generation of war orphans is going to solve everything, right?
- kinseyincanada, on 06/05/2009, -4/+21I dont understand how people can be so god damn stupid, like thinking Obama is a closet Muslim, what do you think he does, secretly prays in a room in the white house or something? Also what the hell does his religion even matter? I can see people not supporting some of his policies but holy ***** some people are just dumb. Muslims are not some sort of evil monster, they are millions of perfectly normal people who worship the muslin faith. Its just a religion, there are ***** extremists who take it way to far, but this can be said about every single belief system.
- muzfuz, on 06/05/2009, -4/+21I disagree. The muslim world hated bush, because he talked down to them (a lot).
Somebody coming in, speaking about "shared responsibility," quoting the koran and other holy books, and addressing the concerns arabs and other muslims have... These things do make an impact, and can warm the hearts of even the most hardened cynics in the muslim world. - reuscel, on 06/05/2009, -10/+26No, but you're in the company of a lot of mouth-breathing ***** with that opinion.
- PandaOnIce, on 06/05/2009, -5/+21He needs to change America's perception of Muslims first. There is so much ignorance and hate here, I've seen it. It's terribly sad to me.
- nalguita, on 06/05/2009, -6/+22I loved that line, brilliant.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -10/+25It may be irreversible. Hundreds of thousands of Muslim families caught in the cross-fire in Iraq and Afghanistan have felt the wrath of U.S. policy. If I had lost my brother or mother in one of these wars, no words from anyone would change my perception.
If Obama is serious about change he'd pull out of Iraq immediately (yes, it can be done in a matter of months) and have a more neutral standing in regards to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
He should also step in and regulate some of the 'sabre-rattling' and 'fear-mongering' U.S. media outlets have done in the recent years. The Iraq war wouldv'e never gotten off the floor without WMD propaganda from FOX, CNN et al. "Iran wants to wipe Israel off the map" & "Build a nuclear bomb" are being utlized Nazi-styles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Lie - lemur, on 06/05/2009, -2/+16It's not really the Muslim perception of the US that needs changing. I talk to real Muslim people all the time (not the imaginary ones you hear about from your non-Muslim compatriots), and they have sound thinking and ideas. What really needs to change is the US perception of Muslims. Let me give you a few examples:
Most of the Muslims I know are American citizens. When Obama wants Americans to think he's talking to "Muslims," he goes to give a speech in Egypt. EGYPT. This signifies two common American misconceptions, that a) Muslims are foreigners, and b) Muslims are Arab. Not only does the United States have a very large and diverse Muslim population, including people of all ethnic groups which in turn includes our typical "native" ethnic groups such as European Americans and African Americans, but also most Muslim Americans are not Arab. Globally, Arabs represent a tiny minority of Muslims and enjoy no special religious authority; Prophet Mohammad said that an Arab is not superior to a non-Arab, nor is a non-Arab superior to an Arab, and neither is a white person superior to a black person, nor a black person superior to a white person. As a fact, most Muslims are Indonesian, which I believe are followed by Indians; Muslims have significant populations in every continent and major region, including North and South America, Europe, Australia, Russia, and China.
One of my friends who is not Muslim could not rid himself of the perception that Muslims are inherently Arab, which is not only racist but factually incorrect. For example, when I explained to him matters of Islamic practice, including theology, philosophy, law, code of conduct, practical ideas, he found them too good to be true. My true thinking was to him too "normal" for him to accept, so he simply said, "Yeah but American Muslims aren't real Muslims like those living in other countries." While every country has a different culture, Islam is Islam; I showed the legitimacy of my statements by quoting the Qur'an. His response was usually, "But the Qur'an says XYZ," where XYZ were false statements he heard from American news corporations, his friends, and things he read online that were not actually in the Qur'an but simply something quoted from the words of Osama bin Laden or other violent extremists.
When people see problems in Arab land (and yes they do have problems), it's tempting but incorrect to associate those problems with the religion of Islam. Their lands and their people have been severely damaged throughout recent history mainly due to abuses committed by foreign powers especially from Europe. There has never been a time recently when European powers were not destroying or stealing Arab property, killing Arab people, or destroying local economy. The resulting poverty, death, and destruction imposed upon these people has been at times brutal and at times moderated, but has never the less been ceaseless. The forced creation of Israel, a non-native state composed of foreign colonists, by European powers is just one in the long list of tragedies Arabs have been forced to suffer through against this will due to the whims of said powers. With this kind of torment over such a long period, it's somewhat of a surprise that not more people are actually blowing themselves up. Yes, they will conjure up a religious justification for whatever they choose to do, but this is no different from the religions claims that Christian terrorists make even though they are obviously violating the teachings of Christ. People tend to make their religion mean whatever they feel like it means rather than taking a scholarly or sincere approach; the Qur'an itself criticizes these people, saying that they don't really care what their religion teaches but just interpret it to suit their own agendas, a phenomenon that can be found in any religion.
Regions who have not endured this level of violation, such as Indonesia, do not witness comparable political woes such as the fighting and terrorism.
Anyway I could go on all day, but that is enough for now. Non-Muslim Americans really need to listen to Obama's speech more than Muslims do; after the speech I have seen a lot of Muslims get interviewed, and they tend to say the same thing, which amounts to, "Oh Obama did a pretty good job; we're glad to hear him saying these things." Nothing in the speech is new or shocking to them, but take a look at the Digg comments here and you'll see plenty of American reactionaries detracting from Obama's statements, such as Obama's affirmation that Islam condemns terrorism and embraces justice, tolerance, and respect for human dignity, that Islam is a native part of the Unites States throughout US history, that we have a thriving, educated Muslim population, that Muslims have fought and died in our wars (this is not a new thing, by the way--Polish Muslims have fought and died for Poland against Turkey, the then so-called "Islamic" power, centuries ago when Poland was the most free country in Europe and protected the civil rights of its Muslims, such as freedom to worship and freedom to own property). He even quoted the Qur'an, but it is not enough to change America's perception of Muslims, which is really what is in question here. Muslims are for all intents and purposes the new "Jews", where it's OK to abuse and hate them and anyone who stands up for them is a traitor to their own civilization. - AndrewMoyer, on 06/05/2009, -2/+14Don't write him off just because he's a comedian; he still makes poignant observations.
- pintomp3, on 06/05/2009, -3/+14And he still speaks more truth than most people on news channels. That's not a credit to Jon, it's a discredit to the corporate media.
- alpha19, on 06/05/2009, -10/+21I'm not a big Obama fan, yet, but what you said is just ***** stupid. Grow up.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -2/+13Idiot, it's not about talking to the terrorists, it's about getting the people who aren't terrorists on your side. God, are you ***** dense? How the ***** do we deal with terrorism without support in the Middle East? I am just utterly baffled that anyone could say something so ***** stupid. I mean, for *****'s sake, do you even have a high school degree?
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -5/+16Nope, every ***** single goddamn Muslim needs to just ***** die, apparently. Genocide is the only way to peace, according to the ***** retarded Republicans in this thread.
- sodade, on 06/05/2009, -0/+10"Apologizing and appeasing as many countries as he could"
You know, ***** like you are the reason America is *****. - muzfuz, on 06/05/2009, -1/+11Did you even listen to the ***** speech?
- WraTH017, on 06/05/2009, -4/+14You should care, because apparently some of them thought about killing americans, and flew a bunch of planes into buildings and nearly three thousand people died.
Not all muslims are terrorist, but it helps to not alienate EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. - MaxxusFlamus, on 06/05/2009, -2/+12because calling them ***** and invading their countries have done wonders for us.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -9/+19Actually he raises a point, why are the opinions of Muslims more precious than the opinions of 1 billion Chinese athiests or 1 billion Hindus for instance.
If Iraq was about oil then Obama's apology suck up tour is about oil as well
"please keep the oil flowing, we promise to overlook your Jihad mentality!" - pintomp3, on 06/05/2009, -2/+11We could start by not supporting the dictators, monarchies, and theocracies in the region. Not invading countries might help too.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -1/+10Jesus, someone who's critical of Obama but doesn't harp on every single ***** word he says? Someone who doesn't like Obama and yet is still able to react rationally... Has the world gone mad?
- JCEEZ, on 06/05/2009, -3/+12These comments are freakin hilarious (sad).
Are you guys posting from trailer parks or something? Geeze. - ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/05/2009, -1/+10Or life. That would be okay too.
- quarando, on 06/05/2009, -1/+9How could he have been more "Pro American"? His speech epitomized the American values the country was founded on much better than most presidents, certainly better than Bush.
My guess is being more "Pro American" means he shouldn't have acknowledged that the US has made any missteps in its dealings with the middle east. In other words, he should have been less honest and mature and presented a more distorted reality.
And you seem to have no concept of the nature of the middle east threat. It is not arab governments that pose a threat to the US, it is mass anti-american sentiment among the population that foments tacit acceptance of non-state terrorist organizations. I mean the US controls most arab governments with the only major exception being Iran. It is exactly the arab populations that Obama needs to convince to drive out extremist elements. - dagnabbit, on 06/05/2009, -2/+10The "bunch" being the extreme minority of the world's second-largest religion, with about 1.5 billion people?
- bayouJosh, on 06/05/2009, -3/+11I think he said "Blessed are the cheesemakers."
Well, obviously, it's not meant to be taken literally. He probably means makers of dairy products in general. - lyonsban, on 06/05/2009, -0/+8Some, not all feel that way. That's the problem with prejudice you know.
- duncan202, on 06/05/2009, -0/+8If I'm reading correctly, you are a muslim in American? Probably depends on where you live, and sure there are cases where this is true, but where I live (MA) this is totally not the case.
- acknotSW, on 06/05/2009, -3/+11I can't argue with that and I voted for bush the first time. After 911 we needed a statesmen and were stuck with a cowboy.
- Tanktunker, on 06/05/2009, -1/+9Everybody does, I think what he wants is mutual respect, not Muslim appeasement.
- WraTH017, on 06/05/2009, -3/+11I don't believe he mentioned Jews ANYWHERE in his comment.
That's like calling all those that oppose the Iraq and torture "Christian haters!".
I'm part Jewish, and I don't hate the Jews. I do believe the Israeli government has committed criminal acts in very recent history, and I wish it will stop someday. And that's not a racist sentiment in any stretch of the imagination. - insanewriters, on 06/05/2009, -0/+8I heard Obama is giving all Muslims 2000 free Sim Points, so the above actually was relevant.
- LeepII, on 06/05/2009, -16/+23Until the US stops supporting the war crimes of Israel no nation will respect us.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/05/2009, -1/+8You're a waste of skin and an oxygen thief.
