The couple reminded the vice president that President Clinton relied on train travel to reach the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . "The train has been our main-stay," the couple states. "Yet your administration is killing our Texas Eagle. This makes us sick."

      The Texas Eagle is the Amtrak train that for years has operated between Chicago , St. Louis , Little Rock , Dallas , Fort Worth and San Antonio . But facing a $243 million shortfall in 1997, Amtrak President Thomas Downs recently targeted four Amtrak routes for elimination, including the Texas Eagle service between St. Louis and San Antonio . "What can you do to save our Eagle?" the couple pleaded to the vice president.

      Gore responded with: "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Delgadillo, Thank you for your letter regarding the protection of the Texas eagle. I appreciate hearing from you. I share your view that the urgent problem of species extinction and the conservation of biological diversity should be addressed. The first step in saving any plant or animal from extinction is to become aware of and respect the fragile ecosystems that make up our environment. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I look forward to working with you for the future of our planet."

      It's strange he should talk about the ecosystem and extinction since the Texas Eagle is a TRAIN!

He speaks with empty words and generalizations of "hope" and "change" that might, unfortunately, get him into office, yet he has no concrete ideas or plans to base it all on. I can understand why the general population believes the hype, but I do not understand why the media presses for Obama so much.

    Obama does NOT use the word "Liberate". He explains that his uncle was one of the first Americans to go into "Auschwitz, or various other concentration camps. He was A) Unsure and/or vague about which camp and B) never claimed that he *liberated* it.

    We must keep politicians accountable for what they say -- but THIS is a hack-job by some journalists looking for attention. The reporter is putting words (like "liberate") in Obama's mouth. Note: The word "liberate" does not appear in the actual quote. This was paraphrasing at best, and a character assassination at worst.

      Furthermore, he clearly states this is a story passed on in his family. he can't be held accountible for tales passed on through your family....as everyone has family members who embellish the facts of the war as "they" remember it. its how veterans deal with the stress of war. so if his uncle...who SURVIVED the war and concentration camps ect....exhagerates on his retellings of the events....let it go...the guy is a veteran after all.

      how this can be used against obama directly is just pitiful. this speaks nothing against his character. If anything it means he at least listens and respects the stories and beliefs passed down through his family. I'd think a president with family values is a good thing, since McCain and hillary only see dollar signs in everything they do....

But why bring up the achievements of a GREAT uncle? Is that the closest Obama has ever come to war or the military? Let me show you my scar. I had uncles and great uncles who fought in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. And I was never able to pry a word out of them. But even if I had enough stories to fill a book, so what? What does that have to do with me? I have never listed any of my military relatives' accomplishments on any job application I've ever filled out. There isn't even a space for that. But, as long as we're here, let me tell you about my cousin, 89 times removed, who fought in the Clone Wars, a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Try to disprove THAT one. If you're going to lie on a job application, at least make it a lie that isn't so blatant and can't be disproved within hours.

    If Obama wants some battle creds, the gutless wonder should to an interview with O'Reilly, as he has PROMISED to do!

There were dozens and such confusion is hardly unusual. My Mother told me many times that my uncle was killed at Okinawa. Then, I noticed the year he died was all wrong for Okinawa. A little research showed he died at Guadalcanal. Was she "lying"? No, of course not. She was just confused about the death of her dear brother.

One of the cardinal rules of speaking is if you can't verify it, you don't say it. Simple enough.

It's not about his misstating the name of the concentration camp, but with his statements about how the allies liberated the camp and then later on contradicted himself by saying how his uncle was part of the liberators. Another what? moment was when he talked about how people in small towns are bitter and that's what makes them rely on religion and guns. And lets see we now have 57 states according to him, and did you know that over 10,000 people died during a Tornado outbreak (just a whee bit of exaggeration with those numbers). And lets not forget the flap about him and the "just words" speech. You can try and justify these things all you want, but it comes down to one word: verify.
          And I disagree with your characterization of Bush and our actions overseas. What I see is a democracy forming in Iraq, with all the bumps and bruises that come along with that. I see that Germany and France has elected new leaders who lean more toward Pres. Bush's ideology. I also see that we've not had an attack on our soil since 9-11 and I think that has everything to do with how the Pres. has kept them busy overseas. But I'm sure you'll disagree with that and that's fine, our country is all about freedom of expression.
          But that still doesn't explain why Obama continues with all these gaffes.

          No, its not about that at all. Its about what a president can do for a nation. McCain's said plenty of equally ridiculous ***** but I'm not going to list all of it because I'm not that petty.

          The real issue is the war, which is plummeting our country to newfound highs in debt and lows in international popularity. That's why I think its ridiculous you would bring up "international issues" as a measure of electability, when McCain plans to keep poking the wound in that department (Iraq), while Obama wants to at least put a band-aid on it.

I'm not sure why feel you must redirect this to Bush since it's about Obama and his misstatements, not about the war or how Bush is running it. Personally I think we messed up with how it was handled initially, but we've come a long way with the surge and are seeing progress. We have to finish this and can't pull out of Iraq until they're ready to stand on their own two feet, and from what I'm hearing from people on the ground there it's happening. Again, it's not perfect.
          You can believe whatever you want, I think you are fooling yourself if you think someone as idealistic as Obama would be a good Pres., I don't have anything against him personally, I just think he's too soft. And terrorists love that, that's why we were hit again on 9-11, because they perceived us as being weak after the Clinton admin. failed to respond strongly to their previous attacks.
          And you're absolutely correct that McCain has said some incorrect statements, although I don't think he's used his family history in doing so. My point, which you seem to fail to see, is that verification is the important thing. If it can't be verified then don't say it, it's not that tough of a concept to grasp.
