- zacharytelschow, on 01/05/2009, -14/+122So... I pay less now but the government spends more and it is financed through borrowing, which I pay for later. Did he really lower my taxes?
- Huwawa, on 01/05/2009, -11/+81Flawed logic in the summary + not reading the article = buried story waiting to happen.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -5/+69It's like car salesmen logic- we're going to get you into that car for $299 a month- Ok I don't care about my monthly payments-let me know how much the damn car costs-
You think you're getting something- but the sting is delayed- Make no mistake this is not a tax break- this is tax deferment. - YZBot, on 01/05/2009, -4/+66I could careless about tax cuts, give me a damned spending cut.
- xptoast, on 01/05/2009, -2/+48I'm just going to work less hours and spend more. I think that way I can stay at home and buy more crap on the internet. We should all do this. I mean that is the American way right? Do less, expect more?
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -12/+51Plus, he's allowing Nathan Petrelli to create laws to hunt down and imprison people with powers... How ***** much is that going to cost us?....
***** douchebag. - jjvors, on 01/05/2009, -5/+41Tax cuts are always good--cuts in the tax rate. Credits are less good--they may be taken away at any time.
Deficit spending can be solved by reducing spending. Put a hiring freeze and a salary increase freeze on the federal government. Require every Cabinet level head to reduce costs by 10%.
That's not likely to happen. - doublefelix, on 01/05/2009, -35/+67Do you believe him when he said that he's "not going to raise your taxes" now?
- alanocu, on 01/05/2009, -29/+58The only thing we have to change is change Itself. It looks like we are going to get Bush's 3rd term.
Bush tax cuts designed to stimulate a weak economy in 2001 will be left to do the same today. So what will change? The press coverage. The media will cheer the same policies they once denounced, once Barack Obama has embraced them.
In Obamas 2009, the more things stay the same, the more the liberal media will call them change. - oboshoe, on 01/05/2009, -3/+31Direct taxation is not the real tax rate. That just the payments we make on what we spend (as a nation).
The true real tax is how much the government spends and interest on the debt. That is the amount of tax that has to be collected....eventually.
By this measure, Bush increased taxes on the American public more than any other president in history. That $700 billion bailout?..That was a tax increase.
By this measure, will Obama raise taxes? Well if he does everything that he promises, its a certainty. The question is, which generation will pay it? Ours, or the next one? (ok.its not a question. sorry grandkids)
(Since I just said something negative about Bush, and something that might remotely be construed as negative against Obama, I fully expect to be bury'ed into oblivion :) - hasahugedig, on 01/05/2009, -15/+43the next shirt i buy is gonna say, "Don't blame me, I voted Ron Paul."
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -3/+30How does one cut taxes on people who pay no taxes?
- chr0nic21, on 01/05/2009, -6/+30people have so much faith in this guy...Now it seems lke he doesn't know wtf he doin
- demonicume, on 01/05/2009, -5/+25buried for inaccurate summary. WTF subby?
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+19Dear President Elect Obama,
Instead of cutting my taxes, why not cut government?
Then let's talk about cutting taxes.
Sincerely,
The American Taxpayer - WorldLeader, on 01/05/2009, -3/+21MY shirt will say: "Don't blame me, I make problems better by bitching about them on the internet."
- Zcaithaca, on 01/05/2009, -2/+18Lower taxes = more spending
more spending = more "taxable" money for the government
more "taxable" money for government = more money for government
Lower taxes = more money for government - badqat, on 01/05/2009, -7/+22Yeah, the republican party has certainly proven itself to be the party of fiscal conservatism...NOT.
Simply trying to make this an "us" against "them" argument is the wrong tact. It's not simply for people who obtain EIC - but also folks who pay taxes. - robertdickie, on 01/05/2009, -3/+18I feel like I am in the twilight zone. Bush runs on a platform of bringing our troops home and to stop the "nation building" he said we had in the Clinton years with military deployments to Bosnia and Somolia. Then he goes on the biggest nation building, military deployment, largest war in terms of dollars our nation has ever seen. Now we have Obama coming in saying no more tax cuts...and before he takes office he is offering up tax cuts of 310 billion. No wonder people people don't believe what politicans say. I am all for a tax cuts personally I just think it is laughable these guys never follow through on their promises.
- oboshoe, on 01/05/2009, -0/+14Politicians say whatever they think will please you.
Then do whatever they think will please themselves. - biogears, on 01/05/2009, -18/+32The left hates it when people keep more of their own money. It keeps power in the hands of the people instead of the government.
- badqat, on 01/05/2009, -5/+19You know that it's more than "not likely", but probably has a snowballs chance.
I agree - tax cuts are always good...but adding to the deficit is just placing the burden on future generations. It's a shame that both parties think spending is always the answer. - biogears, on 01/05/2009, -5/+18Constitutionally limited government and low tax rates does not mean anarchy.
- angryfirelord, on 01/05/2009, -2/+14I propose the best tax cut of them all:
http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer - samthurston, on 01/05/2009, -9/+20Government... spends... more...
Have you paid any attention at all for the last eight years? - mfc5200, on 01/05/2009, -2/+12There is actually something to say as to whether government financing is moral. If the government is issuing 30 year loans today, that means some kid who was just born will have to pay back the principal when he is 30. He obviously had no say in the manner. That is by default taxation without representation.
I can understand government financing in 1-5 year increments, because they might be a sudden need for money, unexpected crisis, etc. But 30 years? Thats just not fair. If you are in your 50's or 60's of course you want the government to SPEND SPEND SPEND, because you reap all the benefits in the present, and wont be around when the bills are due.
Totally unjust. - inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+10There are basic economic factors that Uncle Sam simply doesn't understand.
I have a brother with a similar mindset. He seems to always be desperate for money, yet he and his wife can't get their hands off of their wallet to save their lives. They've been bailed out by family members too many times... and now we refuse to do it. They've been aided by their local church to the point that the church will no longer assist them. So now they have decided leech off the American taxpayer and get a free ride. All the while they blame everyone else and expect the handouts to keep rolling in.
Hey Obama.... here's a simple formula for you:
Reducing the size of government = spending less = less need for taxpayer money = taxpayers take more home = better quality of life for the average American.
No kidding.. it's that simple! - oboshoe, on 01/05/2009, -0/+9Yes I was rather disappointed to see that the first thing Obama did, was meet with Nathan Petrelli.
***** he didn't even think about. He was just like "oh sure Senator Petrelli, you can have everything you need". "now get the ***** out of my limo. yes its the middle of of nowhere, but you can just fly your ass home" - AmericansRevolt, on 01/05/2009, -6/+15if ron paul won this would be the last year we have to pay taxes on our labor....
- davidmesaaz, on 01/05/2009, -1/+10Massive tax cuts and spending ... What ever happened to the "failed economic policies of George W Bush"
- SemiSarcastic, on 01/05/2009, -1/+10So...Does that mean I'll get that Xbox360 I always wanted?
- elipabst, on 01/05/2009, -1/+9He's always said he was going to enact a tax cut to the middle and lower class as well as cuts for small business. The only ones saying anything different was the Republican spin machine.
- norman619, on 01/05/2009, -2/+10They need to stop playing politics and make the tough calls knowing full well the people will hate them for it but in the end things will b better.
- dave122, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8@TheTao
God forbid they cut taxes AND spending. - Zephik, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8Anyone who wants to be president, shouldn't be president. Douglas Adams was a pretty smart man.
- davidmesaaz, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8I thought tax cuts only benefited the rich?
- Awsomo6, on 01/05/2009, -5/+13Well he's half way there. Hes smart enough to know that tax cuts are a good thing, lets hope he also can get spending under control. Deficit spending isn't exactly a good way to get out of a mess that was created by deficit spending...
- regeya, on 01/05/2009, -2/+10"I'm sick of federal bills being named, as its a form of propaganda."
I think 'Patriot Act' would be the ultimate example. It's an unpatriotic bill, a terrible kneejerk reaction, bankrupting the country, and allegedly isn't all that effective anyway. - bradcrc, on 01/05/2009, -7/+14Bush lived for tax cuts and huge spending increases and everything went well under his rule...
wat?
oh nevermind. - JohnFive, on 01/05/2009, -7/+14Too bad Obama fan boys only care about image. Tax cuts will sure get their boner's poping.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+7With the way Obama's going to raise taxes on people who are doing financially well, working less and making less money might just make sense.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+8I think people forgot that not only was a policitician.. but he came to washington as a career lawyer.
And they expected a career lawyer not to lie his ass off? - inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+7No, I'll believe him when he actually signs a law that lowers my taxes, until then this is no better than him working to remove telcom immunity from the FISA bill that he ended up voting for anyway.
- pierrelourens, on 01/05/2009, -0/+7NYTimes recently published an article regarding the tax cuts and new spending.
However, it is better researched, considering the fact that they included that democrats and republicans alike were looking into ways to cut waste.
"Other Congressional officials said House Democrats would consider a plan this week requiring a new audit of all federal agencies and mandating Congressional hearings whenever inspectors general identify potential waste or fraud." - Evanmontegarde, on 01/05/2009, -2/+9Tax cuts + more spending = a basic tenet of Keynesian economics.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -6/+12try a facepencil
- nmessick, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6the government should never "invest" in anything. The problem, is that they never make the best choices on where to put the money. Capitalism makes the most of every dollar, cherry picking ceritian areas to put money ends up being rife with corruption and waste.
- samthurston, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6Don't forget the classic Help America Vote Act (but don't bother counting the votes)
- sh4rkb1t3, on 01/05/2009, -1/+7you might get a couple chocolate bars and some beer if you're lucky.
