North Texas school district will let teachers carry guns
chron.com — In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations... "When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that's when all of these shootings started."

- aaronsdropzone, on 08/15/2008, -8/+46"When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that's when all of these shootings started." Seriously. About time people started talking about the elephant in the room.
- Vincent21212, on 08/15/2008, -11/+8Are you seriously going to blame that program for school shootings? There is no way that you believe that, so why would you suggest it?
How can you tie one to the other? and do you seriously believe that more guns in schools are even going to prevent mishaps? WE'RE DEALING WITH MOSTLY SUICIDAL TEENAGERS. They don't care if they get shot by the teachers. As long as they can get a couple of rounds off sooner and takes others with them. Plus, all they have to do is a little extra planning. As soon as a kid shoots his armed teacher, all other "Rambo" teachers are going to book it out of there, leaving the student with open range.- Minarchian, on 08/15/2008, -5/+14I'll tell ya what.
Put a sign in your front yard that reads:
NO GUNS ARE IN THIS HOUSE
Then tell me how long it takes before you get robbed, beaten or even worse. By having the schools without weapons for self-defense it's the very same thing as that sign in your front yard.
That's the issue we're dealing with here. Safety through self defense.
As for suicidal teenagers, if you know of a cure for that let me know....we'll get rich together. And as long as there are lunatics running around we'll need the tools we need to defend ourselves from them. What these tragedies at schools tell us is that the police can't do it so it's up to us (as in teachers).
- Minarchian, on 08/15/2008, -5/+14I'll tell ya what.
- smotpoker, on 08/16/2008, -8/+6Interesting... no mention of "correllation == causation" argument.... The other day it was the first one posed by the gun nuts when someone mentioned assault weapon ban lowering gun violence.
I reckon some people don't give a ***** about accuracy or consistency when there is a chance to see more bloodshed! - Equinox2012, on 08/16/2008, -3/+2Podunk, Texas with no crime is gonna carry guns in school and will claim that guns in school is the reason for no crime. How retroactive.
This won't work in the bigger cities and the judges will squash it before it goes to far. It just a matter of time before a teacher snaps and shoots a kid for not raising his/her hand.
Teachers are there to set examples of upstanding people. Teachers with guns tells kids "come get me.".
Guns in college, I don't care... not in elementary - high schools.- BBWolf, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3"Teachers with guns tells kids "come get me.".
Guns in college, I don't care... not in elementary - high schools."
No, what Teachers with guns tells Nut-Jobs is that if you intend to harm my students or myself there will be a price to pay. Those bent upon mayhem are nuts but not stupid...why do you think they don't attack your local shooting club?

- Christianptriot, on 08/15/2008, -7/+41FINALLY! Some place with some sense - why WAIT for someone with a gun to arrive to help out innocent and DEFENSELESS students, teachers and administrators - have the guns right there, in the hands of trained and permitted teachers, janitors and staff.
Of course we'll hear all the 'potential' horrors that could happen because of this - except that those horrors ALREADY HAPPEN when teachers do not have the means to protect themselves and their students...
Gun-free zones are the politically correct way of saying, "Defenseless Victims Zone"- Vincent21212, on 08/15/2008, -15/+4YOURE GOING TO PUT GUNS IN THE HANDS OF CRAZY JANITORS? Youre ***** loco man! You and anyone who believes this crap is stupid beyond repair.
"Trained" doesn't cut it either. You start freely allowing guns to be possesed by people like teachers and janitors, you're asking for trouble. Some of these people will encounter troubles of their own and might turn the guns on others themselves! You guys are putting YOURSELVES in the heroic position, thats why you're all for it. But not everybody is like YOU and deserves to wield a gun. And the state sure isn't going to put all these people through psychiatric evals to see if their apt to posses a weapon amongst kids.- Troika37, on 08/16/2008, -4/+13There is already a precedent. Look to Utah, where teachers have been armed for 10 years.

- XxZtemxX, on 08/15/2008, -5/+13i think this is an excellent idea. it may be in the district's best interest to make sure all of the the teacher's they have employed are sane though, or else this could come back to bite them in the ass.
- Minarchian, on 08/15/2008, -2/+9Define "sane".
I some circles it could be argued that *most* teachers are rather insane.
And if they have been put in the hospital for insanity what are they doing teaching in the first place?- mathewsj, on 08/15/2008, -3/+7"sane" is not a liberal digg poser.
- XxZtemxX, on 08/16/2008, -2/+3i dont have a correct definition of sane, but you know what i meant.

- Minarchian, on 08/15/2008, -3/+9Wow...are you deluded or what?
This is only a very small sample of the so-called "mentally screened" police officers in the act. I can fill the page with stories like these.

What's the problem again? - Vincent21212, on 08/16/2008, -2/+2That's my point, stupid. If we can't 100% trust the people we train to carry firearms, how can we trust everybody else. And by the way, theres 100's of thousands of police officers in this country, probably in the millions, so posting 10 incidents (even if you had 100) isn't saying much on your cause. You're a ***** baby. Did you get you weed confiscated or something, that now your panties are up in a bunch about police officers? Shut the hell up.
And as far as Troika's argument, well how many other states have been school shooting free in the last ten years, without permitting guns? I bet many more. Youre argument can be purely coincidental.
- Minarchian, on 08/15/2008, -3/+9Wow...are you deluded or what?

- vtnerd, on 08/15/2008, -5/+25Support the push for concealed carry on college campuses too!
www.concealedcarry.org - noahsawyer, on 08/15/2008, -13/+9I think this is a bad idea. There is always the possibility of a teacher teacher using it wrongfully (ie: threatening for ill purposes). Just make sure that no gun are allowed in the school and there will likely be no problems.
- kemp34, on 08/15/2008, -5/+13How do you propose stopping guns from EVER being brought on to school grounds by nefarious people trying to wreak havoc?
I'd rather have responsible individuals who can defend themselves than open season for outlaws.- ScreenRant, on 08/16/2008, -3/+1True. Look at what the Joker was able to do with a pencil in The Dark Knight.
- Minarchian, on 08/15/2008, -7/+10Maybe we should ban pencils too.
There's been a lot of threats and even deaths, all caused by the use of pens, pencils and paper. - ChronicColonic, on 08/15/2008, -4/+14Guns are not evil, but some people can be evil. Did you not see the amount of background checks and training a teacher would have to go through to carry? If you cannot trust a fully trained teacher with a gun, why in the world would you trust a fully trained teacher with your kids?
- smotpoker, on 08/16/2008, -4/+2Uhh... because if he snaps under pressure he will be less able to kill them?
- Troika37, on 08/16/2008, -3/+12I've posted this several times on this thread, but there is already a precedent. Look to Utah, where teachers have been armed for 10 years.
The number of shootings in Utah schools - 0

What's the problem again? - TheTaoOfBill, on 08/16/2008, -3/+10If a teacher goes mental and uses his gun incorrectly there will be other teachers to put him down. It's no different than a student coming in with a gun and shooting the place up. Though I've never heard of a teacher going postal with a gun.
- noahsawyer, on 08/16/2008, -3/+2If responsible teachers are allowed to bring guns to school so should responsible students. That's my major point - an imbalance. I think the better solution is to discourage all fire arms from being brought into school by anyone in the first place. Sure, it's not foolproof, but it is a step.
- kemp34, on 08/15/2008, -5/+13How do you propose stopping guns from EVER being brought on to school grounds by nefarious people trying to wreak havoc?
- Vincent21212, on 08/15/2008, -8/+6I say just let the random acts of violence occur. YOU CANT STOP THEM ALL. You're delusional if you think you can. Now, if you allow cold steel in school, instead of trying to free the school of guns, youre adding to the possibilty of more sorrow.
- LoneRanger85, on 08/16/2008, -8/+6Liberals with guns. This can't turn out well.
- D0P3M4N, on 08/16/2008, -11/+6I think the problem is *Texans* with guns.
- ScreenRant, on 08/16/2008, -3/+6Um, neither of those are a problem. I would think that any teacher willing to carry a gun is not a Liberal (generally speaking) and if you want to talk about Texans with guns, I wonder how the violent crime rate there compares to Washington D.C. which had the most restrictive handgun laws in the country.
- jb1965, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5Don't go confusing the softskulls in the room with facts!
- Equinox2012, on 08/17/2008, -0/+4Our (TX) gun crime rate is very low compared to DC. More people die from speeding and drink druving.
- smotpoker, on 08/16/2008, -6/+4Why do you assume teachers are all liberals? Is it because they care about the future, have an IQ higher than 12 or can tolerate misbehavior longer than 5 sec without beating the ***** out of people?
Whatever your answer, you'd be hard-pressed to find many liberal teachers in Georgia where i grew up, I can imagine TX is 10x worse.- ScreenRant, on 08/16/2008, -2/+4Ah, that's more like it - a typical "Digg" reply.
- Equinox2012, on 08/16/2008, -2/+4I'm a liberal Texan with a gun... any questions?
- jb1965, on 08/16/2008, -2/+6Government is full of lib gun owners who carry for self protection who have no problem keeping us from the same right. Barbara Boxer is one name i can come up with right off. Are you that kind of liberal?
- Equinox2012, on 08/17/2008, -2/+2If you want a gun I have no problem. I'm all for gun training and education. But guns do not belong in our schools... IN ANY FORM, other than police or guards when needed.

- smotpoker, on 08/16/2008, -6/+1Only one is illiterate, the rest just subscribe to your conservative philosophy "He has a gun so I have to, too!"
- Phatlip012, on 08/16/2008, -7/+8I'd rather invest money in having a cop in every school rather then having a teacher have such responsibility. A teachers job is to teach- not play rambo in the event of a shooting. Leave that up to the police.
A teacher doesn't go into the profession to use a gun. If they wanted to use a gun they'd be cops. Leave the chalk to the teachers and the guns to the cops. This is stupid.- blorc, on 08/16/2008, -5/+8Owning or carrying a gun has nothing to do with a profession. It has to do with a natural right that every man and woman have, which is protected by the 2nd Amendment.
- Phatlip012, on 08/16/2008, -3/+5It is if part of your job deals with having to potentially kill someone. Does the teacher get hazard pay too? Come on- this is insane.
- mikesoba, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1'...every man and woman..."
That would include students and criminals. Well thought out. - KJeffV, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1Er, Mike, don't criminals ALREADY carry? Well thought out.
- Minarchian, on 08/16/2008, -2/+6What makes you think a cop won't go ***** insane on students....they already are.
People put too much stock in having government either bail them out or protect them.
The last thing we want, or need, is the schools turning into prisons.
Do you want guard towers and razor wire in schools too?- Phatlip012, on 08/16/2008, -2/+3The same can be said about a teacher with a gun too. I'd rather a cop with further training with a firearm have a gun then a math teacher.
- Minarchian, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3I would rather my children be more worried about learning the ABCs than have to live under a repressive school system with police thugs roaming the hallways, looking for reasons to taser and crack open their skulls with the slightest provocation.

- smotpoker, on 08/16/2008, -5/+3OBVIOUSLY we have to arm the students now too. Everyone knows the only way to protect yourself from guns is to throw more of 'em into the mix. /s
