- deadapostle, on 05/25/2009, -26/+538My heart goes out to the people of South Korea.
May God have mercy on their Seoul. - taneem, on 05/25/2009, -14/+340Oh surprise.
Saddam may have been the wrong guy to be worried about. - mech887, on 05/25/2009, -6/+309The cycle:
Step 1) NK launches a missile, blows something up, or makes belligerent remarks
Step 2) USA roundly condemns the act, pursues a diplomatic solution and/or new sanctions on NK- someone usually says "all options are on the table"
Step 3) After initially condemning NK's actions, and feigning diplomatic overtures, China, Russia, and SK appease the NK apparatchiks with food and energy aid. (the US/Japan has zero leverage over the NK regime - besides military conflict)
~rinse and repeat~
Meanwhile, millions of North Korea children are brainwashed, starved, and tortured.... generation after generation after generation... - theysayjump, on 05/25/2009, -2/+236To be fair he did have a dangerous moustache.

Countdown timer : 6.00 - Sublex, on 05/25/2009, -14/+104Oh, *****.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -4/+88Tuesdays headline:
United States repeatedly tests nuclear weapons on North Korean soil, nothing to see here. - stutimandal, on 05/25/2009, -4/+66I hope they do not test fire another missile on Japan.
- Sevenfeet, on 05/25/2009, -5/+66Basically nuclear non-proliferation treaties, their willingness to sell the technology to the highest bidder, the starvation of their own people under a paranoid cult-of-personality military regime, etc... Even the Chinese (their closest allies) think these guys are nut-jobs.
- SamSks, on 05/25/2009, -0/+57N. Korea's actions aren't exactly making the Chinese leadership happy. The Chinese need the West to continue with their modernization and development plans.
- fightingforair, on 05/25/2009, -0/+55Ironically, people are safer in South Korea than in Japan from attacks.
North Korea does seek re-unification. But they want it under their government.
They still got ill feelings towards Japan, as do some South Koreans. - JackSchittt, on 05/25/2009, -3/+52I'll post the same thing I post every time this comes up:
The problem with invading North Korea is the humanitarian crisis it would cause.
The amount of people fleeing the country would be unmanageable.
Plus, there's the whole "Cult of Personality" thing. Most citizens think of Kim Jong Il as a god. Hell, official news sources claim things like the guy makes all holes-in-one playing golf and he doesn't piss or *****. It's almost like Stockholm Syndrome, taken way beyond "extreme". They're so hypnotized that they'd gladly die for him. You'd see civillians willingly being used as human shields, mass suicides in his honor, etc.
And Kim Jong Il knows this. He might be ***** crazy, but the guy ain't stupid. He knows that other countries handle him with kid gloves not because they consider him threatening, but also partially because they want to avoid a humanitarian crisis.
Kim knows he'd ultimately lose any war. But he also knows that he's got just enough firepower to go down in a blaze of glory. He'd not only take himself down, but he'd do some significant damage to South Korea, Japan, and even the US, who's troops he knows are already stretched thin. He'd virtually take down his own citizens with him as well. We'd win in the end, but the mess that would be created in the meantime woudl be beyond catastrophic to the entire world.
And like I said, Kim knows this. And he also knows that it's a situation we all want to avoid. Which is why he pulls the stunts he pulls -- he knows that ultimately, nobody will actually *do* anything about it until they have no other choice. - KyotoWolf, on 05/25/2009, -3/+48They Pusan'd their pants
- SniperZero, on 05/25/2009, -1/+44I hope they do then we can see some ***** gundams
- TypeEE, on 05/25/2009, -2/+45I think part of the reason is so far, Japan had never admitted what they have done in WWII is wrong. They altered their history books to dodge important facts which could have pointed out their evilness. This is very different from the attitudes of the Germans
- cmost, on 05/25/2009, -1/+43Yeah, but N. Korea didn't have any oil...
- firewall1, on 05/25/2009, -5/+44Well, we're still searching for WMDs. Can't be busied with a real threat.
- localzuk, on 05/25/2009, -15/+52To those who comment about Obama's lack of action on the N.Korea issue, what would you have him do? The USA is currently fighting wars in 2 countries. The military of the USA is stretched. Also, invading a nuclear power would be a very bad idea...
So, what do you want Obama to do? The only thing he can do is push for more sanctions, which makes them even more angry.
The only way to deal with the issue is via diplomacy, not force. - inactive, on 05/25/2009, -4/+39Well, what can we do otherwise? China and Russia would freak out if America actually took any action against North Korea.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 05/25/2009, -0/+34Right, and Kim won't even conform to that sacred Bad Guy mustache code. How evil can you get.
- SamSks, on 05/25/2009, -4/+38As long as they don't start trying to invade S. Korea.
- failtrain, on 05/25/2009, -1/+35ION cannon ready!
*Attacks nuclear missile silo*
Mission accomplished!
*Play C&C winning music* - adioz, on 05/25/2009, -6/+37Hopefully this won't end in another war..
- thetrev, on 05/25/2009, -3/+32It's only a matter of time before N. Korea gets beaten into hell with nukes by a computer that can't win at tic tac toe.
Commanded by Matthew Broderick.
Via 56k. - kazamx, on 05/25/2009, -6/+35I think we all know what to do here. Lets attack Iran.
They might be thinking about the possibility of trying to work out how they might go about making a prototype of a weapon. Why would we let them get away with that? Iran is clearly more dangerous than n. Korea. - Nephrastar, on 05/25/2009, -1/+29My impression of North Korea:
"HEY! HEY! *Jumps up and down* Look at me!! Pay attention to me!! I need attention!! HEY! LISTEN TO ME GODDAMMIT!!"
In all seriousness though, Kim Jong Il is trying to start a fight at this point because he's so ronrey - marx2k, on 05/25/2009, -0/+28Blue jeans, Beatles 8-tracks and 1980's-era Vogue magazine to catch the ladies up on current fashions. Oh, and more ridiculous looking sunglasses for Kim.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -6/+33Huh, wha-*Sprays tea all over computer screen*
- dcx516, on 05/25/2009, -6/+32just do something about it already, last thing we need is the UN writing north korea a letter that tells them how very very angry they are at them.
- mech887, on 05/25/2009, -1/+27I would not be worried about China and Russia if we took military action, but rather the citizens of Seoul and Tokyo that would receive the brunt of the NK counter offensive. That is why the US will never preemptively attack NK, our allies would blame the US for their civilian causalities, and not the NK weapons. The present situation is like a castle siege of old... on a bigger scale of course, but along the same lines, we'll starve em out, but this does not work as China, SK, and Russia allow food aid into the country.
Unfortunately there is not much we can do except drown the country's TV and radio waves with the truth about their leadership and continue creating technology to counter missiles and artillery attacks. - blinktude, on 05/25/2009, -2/+28They have plenty of war experience from starcraft
- flip2trip, on 05/25/2009, -1/+27You know it won't work that way. It's like trying to un-fu*k a pregnant woman.

- BedPost, on 05/25/2009, -4/+27Or maybe its just the most fun game ever.
- Denelson83, on 05/25/2009, -2/+24Actually, it's the ordinary North Korean people who have it worse off. It's a prison state.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -1/+23This is going to lead to Japan re-arming. I hope China and the rest of the Asia-pacific region like that prospect.
- Xidane, on 05/25/2009, -3/+25Kim Jong Il: "Check it out! Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Vwap! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks..."

Japan is coming to terms with their own play in WWII. (This is coming from only a few years living here so I am still learning about it)
They mention their role at their various museums and memorials in Hiroshima city. I highly recommend seeing it for those interested in history.
Of course, full honesty is hard to come by. Even for us Americans. We do not spend too much time on the indiscriminate fire bombings of the various cities in Japan. See the movie "Grave of the Fireflies" for a great portrayal of that. - kickcows, on 05/25/2009, -1/+19Not me. I'm le tired.
- krishnaavatar, on 05/25/2009, -2/+19North Korea has a serious `bargaining tool` in their arsenal now. I wonder what they`re going to demand this time.
- deathfix, on 05/25/2009, -7/+24I say we just ignore North Korea.
- JackSchittt, on 05/25/2009, -8/+24And exactly what are we supposed to do about it?
Diplomatic solutions have already been repeatedly proven to be useless. - unknownpoltroon, on 05/25/2009, -4/+20Letssee, which path would you take:
1: Get called an evil empire by the US.
2: Don't have nukes.
3: Get your ***** invaded and/or blown up.
OR
1: Get called an evil empire by the US.
2: Have Nukes
3: Don't get your ***** blown up.
North Korea's nuclear plan seems to make a LOT of sense in this context. AS does Irans. Or Leroy Jenkens style foreign diplomacy has shown that the ONLY way to deal with being disliked by the US was to have a nuke. - portnoy, on 05/25/2009, -2/+18As as do most Chinese, and maybe Russians.
