It's not only that they have nukes but how many and how powerful they are. N Korea's nuclear warfare capabilities are still very much unknown: by showing they can "waste" 2 warheads in testing, Kim and his buddies are sending a powerful message to the international community. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Kim Jong-IL and Mahmoud Ahmedinajad have made geopolitics fun again.
- Oversoul, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Hey, whatcha' worried about? Haven't you seen the movies, or read the books??
After a nuclear war those of us that survive will get to rule the wasteland in our custom hotrods and wear cool post-apocalyptic costumes! - brett75, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think some of you who think it is insignificant that North Korea will be testing nukes again are crazy. A lot of people in this country better wake up soon and realize what is going on. The same people who aren't worried about North Korea are also not worried about extreme Muslims and other threats around the world and are more concerned with bashing Bush and demeaning America.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7And that's the point...
With the USSR and the USA, they were able to keep from shooting at each other simply because we knew that if a hot war ever started, we'd pretty much assure that the human race would end.
With all these side countries building nukes, there's no telling where one will end up, where it will be used, and what will be the fallout(yes, pun intended).
Worst case is NK gets buddy-buddy with Iran, gives them a few nukes. Iran passes those onto some suicidal terrorist group. And in the final move, there's mushroom clouds sprouting in major US cities, or possibly Iran makes good on it's promise to wipe Israel of the map. - LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Quite frankly I believe everyone understands that nukes should never be used as weapons. Problem is, everyone also knows that since they *DO* exist, they need to have them or appear weak/defficient.
Each time a new country goes nuclear, that's one more country that can go postal and end life as we know it. The fewer people that have it the better. - cyrillsneer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Maybe it is because i was too young to remember the cold war, but this sort of news genuinely scares the hell out of me, i find the whole concept of nuclear war chilling to the bone.
:( - habu, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14@ skylights: Nukes and mustard gas are on a totally different level... wow... Might want to read up on who (not just the US) does not think that NK having nukes is a good idea...
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11OK, we know that they have nuclear weapons, why should we care how many times they test them? (especially if it's underground)
- scubajim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The reason we care is because as you detonate each test you refine your nuclear design and manufacture process. Their first test was a dud. It fizzled. The resulting explosion was very very small. Building a sucessful mult stage atomic bomb isn't as easy as souping up a car.
- Van3ck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because nuclear weapons, weather detonated underground, or above, still release tons of nuclear waste and radiation?
Underground testing helps prevent these massive after effects from being released into the atmosphere... But it instead releases it into the soil and water... which then seeps into vegetation and livestock and people. Just do some research on how much Strontium90 has been building up over the years due to Nuclear weapon testing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I'm sorry this is a bit off topic but I can't look at that guys picture anymore without thinking of his puppet in Team America - "Hey Hans Brix"
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't think anyone here cared about N Korea until they started threatening specifically the US with nuclear bombs. That "mind your own business" line only works when the other guy is not threatening to blow you up. Also Communism is not a threat anymore so that's laughable.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I truly hope you're not an American.
- Khlept0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What do we have for him, Johnny?
We have an all inclusive 3 year stay the exclusive Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. - thefurryone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@brett75: "sfacets, you should be locked up for making such a comment. Hopefully, your IP will be traced and you will be arrested."
Um, no. He's allowed to /say/ that. It might not exactly win him any friends, and he might get shaken up by the feds for it, but ultimately he can still say it. It's when he /acts/ on it that he gets a very short layover in FPMITA prison on the way to Death Row.
That said, regardless of how badly Bush and his disregard of the laws has ***** this country over, he's still entitled to due process under them. So someone had better get cracking on indicting him for half of the stuff he's done. - killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They don't *have* to inform anyone. They don't *have* to feed their people. They don't *have* to respect the most basic human rights.
People like you seem to think we are dealing with a sovereign, civilized nation who is developing nuclear technology. North Korea is completely unstable. The entire world, not just the US, has absolutely no confidence in Kim Jong Il's ability to responsibly wield that type of power. - sterken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It'll be ok... just don't forget to duck and cover...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQnDXlGtMi8 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@loudribs: hi, just to inform you that if some crazy dictator test nuclear weapons in his backyard it might not be something that bush have to address by it's own. This things takes time and diplomacy first, wich involves even all those weird few billions people who dosen't live in US. the world is big and complicated.

"Iran's internal bureaucracy makes it difficult for them to maintain the petroleum refineries and infrastructure so they are falling into disrepair and will be running at a minimum capacity. What you don't hear is that it's Russia funding Iran's nuclear development."
I'm sure everyone here is looking forward to an Iranian Nuclear program that falls into disrepair because of internal bureaucracy. And I've heard for a long time that Russia is assisting Iran with nuclear development.
"Yes, it's true that they have some of the world's largest oil stores, but so did the USSR not so long ago(what happened there?)."
The problem with Iran is not that they are running out of oil. The problem with Iran is their political situation. The same could be said for the former USSR. Many countries do just fine without nuclear energy. - mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Shiites have suicide attacks as an ultimate sin, just because you are ignorant of the difference between Shiites and Sunni fundamentalists doesn't make you eligible to spout inaccurate things."
You are the one being inaccurate.
Iran props up Hezbollah. If you don't think Hezbollah is a terrorist organization you have a really narrow view of what terrorists are. - mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Be grateful that the UN is now run by a South Korean. If the UN is capable of doing anything to stop NK it's going t happen under the new UN chief. If that doesn't happen, then I think everyone should just completely write off the UN and every state will just act in their own immediate interest.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Instead of Nukes they should just unleash the Gwoemul on their foes.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Stevethegreat
Granted, I don't know a whole lot about Iran. I was just positing a worst case scenario. - vampares, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only an American in another mans country can do his shock 'n' awe and piss in his pool. So you'd better knock it back to the balls.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@thcobbs: I think you -and most of the American- have a heavily distorted image about Iran, just like you had about USSR. Just because they are not pro-Americans doesn't make them thugs, or puts them in the kill-list, this is how mafia works not whole countries, especially the world leading country. I can't tell you about NK since there are indeed serious problems there, but as for Iran most of the world see an honest attempt from a country to develop itself.
I 've read every Ahmadinejad speaks and not in one said WE will wipe out Israel, he just said that Israel is a hostile stare (which really is to its neighbors) and Allah will destroy it (not Iranians), or it will be disbanded in the end as American support will wither in the place.
Also -keep in mind- that Iran was never linked to any terrorist attacks, Shiites have suicide attacks as an ultimate sin, just because you are ignorant of the difference between Shiites and Sunni fundamentalists doesn't make you eligible to spout inaccurate things. Never forget that Iran was attacked by the US-backed Iraq back in the 80s, although it never was in clear line with the communist USSR, it was just a cowboy action by the US to prove Soviets that they can screw in their neighborhood (during Stalin's reign USA would never imagine of such a think, another indication of the Soviets' demise).
As for USA, of course they have to fear but not just for Iran, but for the rest of the world as well, you have to know that silently the rest of the world DOESN'T agree with US about Iran (everybody agrees about NK) and possible attack to Iran form US would have really bad outcome for America, not because off the Iranian nukes but because the hostility and tense which will be created between EU, Russia and China against the US. When dealing with thugs you must be sure you are not the one, because if you do then you are the despicable not the one defending himself. - vampares, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gwoemul is that thing that lives under your toenails?
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So they are going to test another of their 6 or 7 remaining nukes? ha. I say go ahead...soon they will be down to 5, then 4, etc.
NK is STILL at war with SK though and you never know when KJI is going to get up the nerve to just start lobbing them over there. I don't agree with the "who cares if they have nukes crowd", the US would never just start nuking for the "hell" of it, but I am willing to bet KJI would. - Red_Eye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ohhhhh now if they do this what will we take from them... hmm so far they cant import Ipods, hey what about stopping import of 'small' condoms, that should get them.
Personally I think Kim is overcompensating for a weakness somewhere else. - aceg1357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They have only half a dozen nukes and want to test another....go for it. i less nuke for them
- vampares, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You mean the deliberate targeting of *maximum civilian causalities* with major permanent health effects for anyone who survived? It's kind of like gassing people only bigger and they didn't have any guns.
- loudribs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4You gotta admit that they're playing a tight game....and WTF is Bush going to do about it? Send a few carrier groups? Rattle a few sabres? Sweet FA, that's what. Iraq just demonstrated to every half baked despot out there that if you don't have WMD, you'll get a slap in the chops....if you do, then colour Bush's bluff called.
- netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@killinger777: Well, look at it this way. It's a lot easier to tell someone to do it your way and like it when you've got a loaded gun and they're unarmed than when you've got a loaded gun and they have a Bazooka, especially if that person is an egotistical maniac.
- Coronagold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anyone would nuke NK it'd be China, & I bet the US is counting on that. The more China becomes successful in commercialism the less they want a pesky neighbor throwing no joy their way.
China - "You have unlucky dishes! You go Boom now!" (BOOM) End of NK.
I really think China doesn't give a ***** about NK. They're poor, they're desperate, & they really hamper Chinas' lifelong desire to be a Player. - slowmo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+12"...not only do we not want North Korea to 'kneel down,' what we're trying to do is offer them a better deal — better economy, more security, better relations with their neighbors, integration into the global community as opposed to isolation," Snow said."
Let me paraphrase, "Bend over and take it in the ass, please."
What I would do if I ran N. Korea is make my nukes, THEN take up trade negotiations with the U.S.
Teddy Roosevelt said it best: "Walk softly and carry a big stick." That exactly what the N. Koreans are doing. If they have nukes then the U.S. won't ***** with them so much. The only reason the U.S. even cares about N. Korea is because they are communists, and some Americans have a serious problem with that. I think it's related to that whole "inability to keep their noses out of other people's *****" kind of thing. Either that or they have a hard-on for cold wars. - brett75, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6sfacets, you should be locked up for making such a comment. Hopefully, your IP will be traced and you will be arrested.

"I don't think anyone here cared about N Korea until they started threatening specifically the US with nuclear bombs."
LOL, so I take it this occured before the U.S. invaded Korea back in the fifties? - slowmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1People also give Iran ***** about developing nuclear technology when they actually will have a legitimate need for it in the next decade for generating electricity. Yes, it's true that they have some of the world's largest oil stores, but so did the USSR not so long ago(what happened there?). Iran's internal bureaucracy makes it difficult for them to maintain the petroleum refineries and infrastructure so they are falling into disrepair and will be running at a minimum capacity. What you don't hear is that it's Russia funding Iran's nuclear development. Chew on that for a while. Who would say no to free nukes?
- scjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0KJI "How did they do that Hiroshima thing again?"
- theImposs1ble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I agree, they will be like the darwin award winners with nukes. Like those kids that are too stupid to play with m80's and blow their hands off.
Let them play, eventually when they accidentally blow something up really bad, we will laugh at them.
not to mention by the time they can actually make (afford) something that can deliver a warhead we will be living on the moon and will have a full electromagnetic shield surrounding our moon colony.
I mean, that is because America does OWN the moon. We got our flag their first. FTW - Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Kim is just jealous cause Japan has better VC lineup than he can get for his Wii.
- Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2because when you test things, normally the result is you get better. What happens when you get better nukes? i dunno, they kill more people?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1why do we listen to news on go.com?
- loudribs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@2tomato: I agree...but it's very hard to come up with a coherant international response when the worlds only super power has shown nothing but disdain for the international community and international law (same goes for my exhalted head of state Mr. Tony Blair). As you rightly say, the world is big and complicated and it seems I truely hope that this concept is getting through to bush. However, judging by past performances, I'm not going to hold my breath....
- loudribs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2sorry...posted in wrong thread....
- killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Ya buddy, having nukes is really going to help them in trade negotiations... Wow. Amazing how such ignorance gets diggs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Its not what you say, its how you say it.
- MartyD, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The more they test it the more the world gets worried that the whitehouse will do something stupid. And the more the white house respond to it the more the world hate America for not keeping there mouth shut about it. Somethings the public should just get left out of the loop
- Dpack1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"We think they've put everything in place to conduct a test without any notice or warning," - from the article
So just out of curiosity, but why do they have to inform anyone about thier testing? Is that in the Geneva convention or something... oh wait... NK arent part of that union so why should they give a *****?! -
