- phnx0221, on 01/14/2008, -11/+78This was an excellent interview from the Real News Network, and a timely one at that, considering the high amount of drum beating we've seen recently. It's not too long (it's only 8 minutes), but Noam touches upon several important factors that need to be in the sphere of public awareness.
Some of those factors are:
Our history with Iran, particularly pertaining to 1953, 1979, and during the Iran/Iraq war in the eighties.
The agreement signed by the EU and Iran, where Iran explicitly stated that it would stop ALL uranium enrichment if the EU would assist with Iran's security, namely, getting the US to cease with the stated and implied threats of violence. The US refused, so Iran pulled out.
The full cooperation with the IAEA, and Iran's legal development of civilian nuclear power, which many countries throughout the world have undertaken, or are undertaking, and the fact that our Administration is yet again going against international law, the IAEA, as well as against other countries with developed civilian programs, by saying that military action is on the table with regard to even just the knowledge of the technology.
There are many other valuable points that are discussed in this interview. The only thing that was left out, which again, is very important to have in the context of this heightened violent rhetoric, is that we gave them this technology, in the 70's, while Iran was still a client state. The very information we are decrying that Iran has and is developing, is technology that we have given them. So to try to justify yet another war on the allegations put forth by our administration, is once again, grossly erroneous, and very misleading to the people. - AbbyRoad, on 01/14/2008, -9/+49I hope we can get more people to digg this. If you want an even more in depth examination on Iran check out this interview by Amy Goodman with Scott Ritter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EawPGrVz9o there are several parts
He talks about how the President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad really has no authority and is almost a figurehead. Many of the ridiculous things that he says that our media jumps on does not represent most of Iran. The actual leaderof Iran, which is the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is against having nuclear weapons, condemns Ahmadinejad saying "Isreal should be wiped off the earth." However, the MSM of course never says anything about this guy. - lacolonel, on 01/14/2008, -13/+39people should listen to Noam.. and read his books. He is one of the smartest men alive.
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. - inactive, on 01/14/2008, -9/+29Plenty o' Chomsky videos at
youtube [dot] com [slash] Chomskyan - dinostabOMG, on 01/14/2008, -2/+20Is that all you've got? A bunch of quotes, some of which don't even say too much? That he "skittles all over the landscape"? Besides being delicious, that just means that he doesn't toe any party line - which makes him all the more admirable to people who engage their thinkin' muscle every once in a while. IF you can support the thing about his stock portfolio, you might have something - even so, a very easy oversight to make, and pretty easily corrected I'm sure.
Jimmy, you've put my mind at ease; I know how much work you put into your trolling, so if this is the best you can do, we can go on listening to Chomsky's reasoned arguments. The antithesis of your tactics, I know, but somehow that doesn't bother me. - ironhide, on 01/14/2008, -6/+22Ah, Spaz, I was hoping to digg you down today.
- bdbr, on 01/14/2008, -0/+16None of those need to be refuted, because they don't specifically address anything in the Chomsky commentary. He isn't shifting arguments and is getting his numbers from other sources. All you have is ad hominem attacks.
- rarson, on 01/14/2008, -3/+19These people make up stories to do whatever the hell they want. It's pretty obvious. We need to purge Washington of all the crooked politicians.
- danconia, on 01/14/2008, -1/+16He should have brought up the reason we overthrew Mossadegh in '53. He was going to nationalize oil fields that were owned by British Petroleum. Now I'm not one for nationalization but the way BP obtained the oil fields was hardly legitimate and they should have known from the start that their fields were in risk. I really don't think any government should risk the security of its citizens for a huge (seriously BP is one of the biggest corporations in the world) company's shadily-obtained assets.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -2/+15He's very readable. I usually get his books in audio format because his narrative comes across well in that format. It's funny I first started reading Chomsky when working with natural language processing ( NLP ). So I knew him as scientist long before as activist.
- Mufonix, on 01/14/2008, -0/+11He is not an english teacher. He is a professor of linguistics. And he does have quite a bit of expertise in these areas. Perhaps if you researched his writings a little bit, you would see that he has written many influential and well detailed books about both American foreign and domestic policy.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -3/+13JimmySpaza born again facist
- PhilMoskowitz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+10An english teacher? Are you a ***** idiot? He's a nobel winning personality in linguistics. Go learn some little thing so you can be embarrassed about what you said today.
- b8man99, on 01/14/2008, -1/+11In that 8 minute youtube video Chomsky puts it very clearly across that America is in the wrong regarding it's Iran policies. So, when it's this obvious that your president is lying to you (again), how can the American people just stay silent?
- dinostabOMG, on 01/14/2008, -2/+12buried for reasons as above - and for forking the discussion.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -2/+12"socialist traitor "
like those ***** French and their Libtard free healthcare?
"Check out what these people have to say about this communist"
-- ahhh actually if you read his stuff he's more like a syndicalist --- you know DEMOCRACY AT A LOCAL LEVEL and all that pansy hippie *****
keep talking JimmySpaza, you will be rewarded for your boot licking sooner of later! - inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+10It's 1953,
BP: We own the Oil and Iran gets a share.
Iran: We own the Oil and BP gets a share.
You be the judge.
BP and it's predecessor 'East India' raped many countries for more than a century. - notque, on 01/14/2008, -1/+10No, he just thinks he'll bring in a society that compares in evil to leninism. That's all.
- eggnogdog, on 01/14/2008, -3/+12Chomsky is an anarchosyndicalist which is a combination of Marxism and Libertarianism. For the record.
- forknife, on 01/14/2008, -3/+12Wow, you guys are all really smart for denouncing Chomsky, I'm sure that the list of your personal accomplishments is just as great! You must be equally as smart and worldly to flame a man who fundamentally changed the way we look at language. It's called structuralism *****, you can use the techniques vested in discerning the mysteries of one field to that of another, he simply used his BRAIN to take the way one discovers the hidden mysteries of language and applied them to political science, which is at best at the state that anatomy was at during the age of Celsus.
Compared_to_the_neo-conservative and/or reactionary point of view this man is light years ahead. - inactive, on 01/14/2008, -3/+12Everyone should watch this! A real eye opener!
- Phatt138, on 01/14/2008, -3/+12Oh right, because Marxism is inherently wrong and your opinions - while not based on a lifetime of political study and broad foreign experience - are inherently right.
- j1ggy, on 01/14/2008, -15/+24Noam Chomsky is a genius.
- lnf69, on 01/14/2008, -1/+9you're full of ***** about Chomsky. Just because he exposes the lies generated about these people doesn't mean he supports them.
The "either you're with me or you're against me" attitude is very tired. - PhilMoskowitz, on 01/14/2008, -1/+9America has been divorced from their policies for years.
- bedake, on 01/14/2008, -2/+10You suck.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -1/+9column on left summarizes with light quoting - fail.
also, "socialist" does not look so bad when you look at the lifestyles of norther european countries - - danconia, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8Hmmm I'll have to see if he has any audiobooks out. It's refreshing to see enlightened Jews who realize Zionism isn't that great of an idea. It also helps keep people from labeling all anti-Zionists as anti-semites, something that has always bugged me.
- JohnFlux, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8Much of europe is pretty socialist. The UK, where I'm from, has free national health care, social welfare, etc.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8Are you refuting his arguments or stating that he's not allowed to have them?
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8"Always criticizing but never proposing any solutions, that seems to be Chomsky's mantra.'
He's a syndicalist - believes in direct democracy and banning incorporation, I think - inactive, on 01/14/2008, -6/+14Chomsky makes sense, wish someone running for president would listen to that guy!
- DarkRabbit, on 01/14/2008, -6/+13I've NEVER got 4 shouts about the same story. Good to see this making the rounds.
- notque, on 01/14/2008, -1/+8No, Chomsky is a Libertarian Socialist.
He isn't an anarchosydicalist. Spain was, and he supported their tactical decision.
Libertarian Socialist is the range of thought from Anarchism to Left wing Marxism (which contains Anarcho-Syndicalism within it.) - djkonservo, on 01/14/2008, -3/+10Nope, Chomsky doesn't trust Paul at all, see my update on this post:
http://djkonservo.wordpress.com/2007/12/24/new-yor ... - PhilMoskowitz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+7the ***** do you mean? he absolutely proposes solutions. Are you a first time listener then? Do you know what an anarcho-syndicalism is?
- archiesteel, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6Titles don't win arguments, logic does. Show us where his arguments are wrong and you may have a point, otherwise you're simply engaging in logical fallacies, and have no credibility whatsoever.
- rutegger, on 01/14/2008, -1/+7Please don't feed the troll.
- lacolonel, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6actually.. i read him in cognitive psychology and his theories on language acquisition. i later started reading his political books. I don't agree with everything he says, but he is brilliant. and it is a rare person who could stand up to him in a debate. maybe you would like to give it a try since you are so well versed in political ideology.. :)
- notque, on 01/14/2008, -2/+8Neither do I, it's called being sane.
- archiesteel, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6"When it comes to economics, his policy ideas are downright moronic."
Do tell. I'm curious to hear which of these ideas you find moronic, and why. - danconia, on 01/14/2008, -14/+20Why doesn't Chomsky ever talk about domestic policy? Seems to me like he's scared to put his opinion out there when it comes to domestic issues but you can't separate foreign and domestic policies like he tries to do.
Always criticizing but never proposing any solutions, that seems to be Chomsky's mantra. And yes I realize you guys will probably Digg me down but seriously he needs to address the issue of lobbying and its role in our foreign policy. - identifiedlogo, on 01/14/2008, -2/+8You like dragging nonsense! What did he say that was absurdly incorrect in this Video?
- notque, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6He does all the time. Constantly. Without question. Read his stuff.
All you are saying with your comment is, "I don't read him." - notque, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5For our whole history we've been struggling to get our policies into power. Our government was created to keep us out of the decision making.
- lnf69, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6Comparing Noam Chomsky to Micheal Moore is like comparing:
Mozart to Hannah Montana (both famous musicians)
Martin Luther King Jr. to Al Sharpton (both famous civil rights leaders)
My point is:
Michael Moore = Popularist Sensationalizing: simplifying issues to reach more viewers, at the risk of keeping credibility
Noam Chomsky = Extremely highly educated dissident, using only documented facts to back up his arguments, not really caring if many people listen, agree, or even care. Noam is all about getting the truth out there even at the cost of being misunderstood and disliked, but always honest with a very high and respected integrity worldwide. - BeefBaron, on 01/14/2008, -3/+8"Isreal should be wiped off the earth." < NEVER SAID.
When will people stop perpetuating myth? Probably the day people give up religion. - lnf69, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Chomsky often talks about domestic issues. In an 1992 documentary about him entitled "Manufacturing Consent" he talks about how the lobbying is taking over the us gov't.
(http://digg.com/political_opinion/Noam_Chomsky_on_ ...
Note that this film, made 15 years ago describes problems that are even MORE relevant today. - LupeFiasco, on 01/14/2008, -2/+7And if you did a little research you would know the best translation of those words in english was that he hoped Israel would disappear from the pages of time/history.
"Wipe off the face of the earth" and "disappear from the pages of history" have very different meanings when you are using them in the context you are.
Learn - CressCrowbits, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6He said CHOMSKY, not HOROWITZ
