- ForumDriv, on 05/25/2009, -4/+16For someone who spends a lot of time thinking about immigration and immigrants in the US past, present, and future, this was very interesting read.
FTA: In an immigrant nation, tensions are inevitable between the native-born and the foreign-born, older and newer immigrants, and the ancestral practices of immigrant parents and their Canadian-born or -bred kids. The push-pull of ‘old country’ values and new is the alchemy of a living, breathing culture, as opposed to an ossified one. National identity is constantly evolving, as each generation feels free to redefine the country and does, for the better. - clvngodess, on 05/25/2009, -3/+13"There are no second-class citizens."
"• Immigrants cannot be expected to develop amnesia the moment they land in Canada. The nation is the richer for their imported memories, ideas and cultures, so long as these do not violate the law.
• Immigrants have always congregated with their own kind, in so-called ‘ethnic ghettoes’, where they find help in the initial settlement process, thereby reducing the burden on the state.

• The best tool of integration is a job commensurate with one’s skills. Employers who discriminate on the basis of race or religion should be prosecuted.
There is no forced nationalism/patriotism. A national competition on CBC-Radio, asking listeners to finish the phrase ‘As Canadian as...’, produced this winning entry: ‘As Canadian as possible under the circumstances.’ Despite that, or because of it, some of the most moving tributes on Canada Day rallies come from new Canadians. The proportion of immigrants who become citizens is higher in Canada than anywhere else, as also the proportion of members of Parliament who are foreign-born. No racist, anti-immigrant party can hope to win a national election. " - ForumDriv, on 05/26/2009, -6/+13To Meuse, the great defender of race separation and the oppressed white christian, I never suggested Canada as a model for the US. I don't like hockey, beer, bears, or hockey. But I did find the article interesting. The future of the world is for people of races, cultures, and religions to live, cooperate and thrive with people of other races, cultures, and religions. I for one, see that as a good thing. But I draw the line at hockey.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4The future of the world is ethnic nationalism. It has always been the case whenever ethnically distinct people are put together into an artifical politcal entity that chaos erupts in the end. This happened to the Roman Empire and it happened in Europe right before, during, and after WWI and WWII as politicians carved out land without regard to ethnic ties.
Its happening in Tibet where the Tibetan ethnic group is resisting being lumped in with the Han Chinese, in Africa where numerous "nations" consisting of warring tribes are at each other's throats (and where the borders get redrawn as a result), and in the middle east where Jews and Muslims fight over their religious heritage and access to land/resources.
I would also like to briefly comment on the US situation - race relations are enforced by law and the ability to live in separate spaces. If either of those two disappear to some significant extent, I would expect a resurgence in "militant tribalism". The phenomena of white flight and "ghettos" is an example. I would also bring up the tensions between blacks and latinos that exists and is very real but is not being talked about. The force of law is the only thing keeping it from boiling over.
Your future is based on a liberal view of reality that ignores history and ignores history's most significant motivator of humanity. - inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+4Was anything he said actually wrong in its factuality? Can one be opposed to multiculturalism but still be a lover of the world's great cultures and races of people in separate lands? Not everyone who opposes mass immigration and multiculturalism is some sort of bigot who wants to lynch others.
Calling people names is not debate and I think its pretty pathetic that this is your idea of a "response".
I could call you a "commie" (regardless of whether or not you are one) but that would hardly be debate now would it? - Va1kyrie, on 05/26/2009, -2/+5Different races can cooperate with each other if they each keep to their own territory and are not thrown together in a dog eat dog competition. That is why pan-nationalism is love and the multi society culture is full of hate.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2I wouldn't call Richard Warman a "low level employee." Take a look at his Wikipedia page, and see for yourself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Warman
According to his Wikipedia page, in June 2007, Warman received the Saul Hayes Human Rights Award from the Canadian Jewish Congress for "distinguished service to the cause of human rights." Hmm. - AgeofMastery, on 05/26/2009, -8/+10And the klan makes it's appearance.
- graphictruth, on 05/26/2009, -5/+7The secret of the Canadian experience is that we LIKE each other. Oh, and up here, QUITE aside from Evil Hate Speech legislation (and quite aside from a robust Charter of Rights protecting free speech) - it is not our custom to tolerate people who spew that sort of tripe. We turn our backs on them and they are quite often unwelcome in the pub. It's simply not done, to say such things aloud. It's ... well, Americans do that sort of thing. Allow progress further down that slippery slope and soon enough we'll be waving flags, pledging allegiance to our logo and waving good-by to proper football!
- charlie6969, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Whee....the sound of the point going overhead.
Overall, commenting on this article wasn't necessary.
So; READ THE ARTICLE FOR YOURSELF!
Excellent read. - inactive, on 05/26/2009, -7/+8The former Republic of Yugoslavia which managed an uneasy coexistence of differing nationalities and ethnic groups through coercion, rigorous controls on free speech, and a consolidation of power in the hands of an oppressive and ruthless centralized regime. Canada is headed down the same path. Only coercion and suppression of discourse can hold such divided countries together, if only for a brief time.
Canada has already begun to implement rigorous controls on free expression by implementing hate speech laws. For the time being this is seen as necessary to maintain social order. Glenn Greenwald, a liberal constitutional lawyer and journalist for Salon.com discusses thought control and hate speech laws in this article:

Let us hope Canada does not become Israel writ large. If it does the turmoil will surely cross our own borders. - charlie6969, on 05/26/2009, -1/+1Favorite word of the day: gruntled. Favorite word of the weak: meh.
I hope we can learn from our neighbors' successes.
Unfortunately, I don't have a HUGE amount of hope that will happen. - AgeofMastery, on 05/26/2009, -1/+1Let's see a rant calling a nation's entire government racist based on one low level employee's actions...Yeah that's some serious facts he's got backing him up.
- Va1kyrie, on 05/26/2009, -6/+5Canada is not a nation. It is a geographical area with various disparate peoples living there. Any of those people who have an ethnic or tribal identity could be said to be a nation without a state. A nation is a body of people who share a real or imagined common history, culture, language or ethnic origin.
Multiracial states can only be held together by very strong laws and curtailments of freedom. Canada is notorious for this. - sanman, on 05/26/2009, -3/+2Mohammad Haroon Siddiqui is himself a sectarian bigot who has authored numerous editorials bashing ethnic groups he doesn't like, such as "the evil Jooz" and "the evil Hindooz".
He was the former editorial page editor of the Toronto Star, during its worst period of sectarian rantings in the 1980s. If you belonged to an ethnic group he didn't like, he would not give you a fair shake, and the paper would constantly be publishing columns from radicals who'd be bashing your particular ethnic group while eulogizing their own.
Now of course this crook wants to peddle his trumped up slanted worldview to everyone else. What he's really looking for is to re-make society everywhere to reflect his own ugly prejudices. - inactive, on 05/25/2009, -9/+7Short read:
-Canada is multicultural
-Canada has lots of Muslims
-Europe isn't very multicultural
-Muslims don't like the cold
-Muslims like Canada
Overall this article wasn't necessary. - inactive, on 05/26/2009, -11/+7ForumDriv is overlooking the that fact that people who express opposition to state-sponsored multiculturalism in Canada are regularly charged by the Canadian Human Rights Commission and jailed. An investigator with the CHRC recently said "Freedom of speech is an American concept, so I don't give it any value."
Richard Warman, who worked for the CHRC from 2002 to 2004 and who is the most prolific complainant in CHRC history, regularly posted anti-Semitic diatribes on Internet forums. Warman would then file complaints against the operators of these forums, demanding they be fined and ordered to stop allowing "hate speech" to be disseminated.
http://ezralevant.com/2009/03/human-rights-tribuna ...
CHRC employees have also hijacked private citizens' wi-fi connections while investigating to avoid revealing their IP address to potential suspects. There's no confirmation the CHRC used private citizens' Internet connections while posting racist online comments, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
Canada is not a model for the US, despite what ForumDriv says. Unfortunately, the US is moving in the direction of Canadian-style hard totalitarianism.
Kevin MacDonald has warned that "as ethnic conflict continues to escalate in the United States, increasingly desperate attempts will be made to prop up the ideology of multiculturalism with sophisticated theories of the psychopathology of majority group ethnocentrism, as well as with the erection of police state controls on nonconforming thought and behavior."
