News: Mary Winker, killed preacher husband, now
associatedcontent.com — Although the story is still developing, it appears that Mary Winkler, convicted in 2007 of killing her preacher husband, has gotten full custody of her daughters after the children's paternal grandparents turned them over to her in a sudden turn of events. Opinions?

- basye, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3From the article she has temporary custody, with full custody pending. While not excusing anything she has done, she did go through the justice system so has paid her debt. My greatest concern is for her children, and hopefully this arrangement is what is best for them both short and long term. They deserve some degree of normalcy (although I'm not sure how much they can have with their mother).
- AmyVernon, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2I dunno. This is a tough one. If she was indeed a battered spouse, then she deserves to get her children back and try to instill a sense of normalcy in everyone's lives. If she killed him because the financial problems were overwhelming her, not so much. The fact that the husband's parents are giving up their fight is an important aspect, however, and may signal something we don't know about in respect to the battered wife allegations.
- jcorn1, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2That is what I'm thinking as well, Amy. Why did they suddenly drop the fight for custody? Did the kids express a desire to be with their mother? Did the grandparents decide that taking care of the children was no longer possible for them? Sad thing is, the youngest was only 1 when separated from her mother :(
- dleesgeetar, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1wow, just messed up
- Eezyville, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Wow WTF? How could she get her kids back? She killed her husband. I don't give a ***** about how she say she was abused because 1) her defense was shabby as hell, and 2) her husband can't defend himself. I don't think she should have the kids. She claimed her husband was abusive and she wanted to talk things out when she killed him. Well I love how she waited until he was asleep to talk things out, and how she got the shotgun, pumped it, and heard a loud boom when it "accidentally" went off. Then she left him to die and fled. I won't give her any sympathy untill she starts telling the truth. How come she never went for help? If she were abused then why did she hide it? How come her oldest daughter testfied that her father wasn't abusive. Why did everyone who knew them was so surpised to hear about the abuse? Did she hide her bruises that well?
If she were in an abusive relationship then we know who the abuser was. She decied to be violent and her husband is now dead.
