- TinTower, on 02/16/2009, -0/+32Stephen Fry (yes, that one) has joined the protest on Twitter: http://twitter.com/stephenfry/status/1213907407
- Yarkz, on 02/16/2009, -0/+16Dugg, but damn 305 diggs and no frontpage? WTF
- TinTower, on 02/16/2009, -0/+15I'm surprised this even got into law without someone bringing up the fact that it skirts Article 11 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (i.e., you don't get charged, so it isn't a textual violation, but it is a spiritual violation). I wonder how long it is until it gets taken to the appellate courts of New Zealand.
- lxdnz, on 02/16/2009, -0/+15NZ already ranks as one of the lowest rated in the western world for Internet use and services, I can't see how this is going to fix it, nor when the government is so resolved to getting better internet services in this country that they would bring in such draconian laws. There is no benefit to any-one. If people get banned, they'll start canceling there accounts, meaning less $'s for the ISP's, which results in less growth in internet services
- Taktic, on 02/16/2009, -0/+13Beware of Stephen Fry and his Twitter army. His bottom is a treasure house.
- Irishsmurf, on 02/16/2009, -0/+11United we must stand or seperate we will fall.

- TinTower, on 02/16/2009, -0/+9Has your mother sold her mangle? And more importantly, who are you?
I mean, but seriously. He's doing what he does best. And this law is dumber than a bag of wet mice. - brainboy7777, on 02/16/2009, -0/+9dugg for stephen fry.
- Chambler81, on 02/16/2009, -0/+9So if they disconnect upon accusation and making false accusations under the law is not a punishable offense isn't the way to show that this law is wrong blatantly obvious? Just for anyone who doesn't deal in the blatantly obvious, or has for people having an even more warped mind than me.... Every parliamentarian who voted in favor should have to say 'bye bye' to their internet connection within weeks of the new law coming into effect. Lets see how well they do without their daily dose of....
- gehenna, on 02/16/2009, -1/+9You're crazy, almost everything you just said is rubbish except for the first sentence. I'm saying this from my mere 10Mbps cable connection that's never given me any grief.
- cre8d, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8Can someone explain why this hasn't made it to the front page?
- Haoie, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8I'm a kiwi, and I think this law is completely unfeasible.
Hopefully it gets relegated to those dumbs laws that exist but are never enforced. - BoneStamp, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7The mods fell asleep.
- MrAndrews, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6Alternate banner for the campaign (hosted off my server in case the original goes down again): http://1889.ca/2009/02/internet-blackout-nz.html (embed code at bottom of the post)
- tanifa, on 02/16/2009, -2/+8i wish i could spell accused.
- 101100001010101, on 02/16/2009, -1/+7New Zealand...better than Old Zealand
- colombo99, on 02/16/2009, -1/+7Leo Laporte also showing his support! http://twitter.com/LeoLaporte. Come on guys!
- aaronjason8992, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6how come its not popular?
- TikiEast, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5NZ's digital day of Shame
- threepio, on 02/16/2009, -1/+5The kiwis won't see a cent of tourism money from me while this law is on the books. It's an easy enough island to skip over - and a real shame to do so. But ***** it, principles are as the principled do, so either this is repealed or I'm taking my cash elsewhere.
- Taktic, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Well done ^_^
- Taktic, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4Lest I missed out, no frontpage mention? The Digg failgorithm selectively ignoring this one? ^_^
- Hockey13, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4I hate to be a geography nerd, but relative to GMT, New Zealand is just about as far east as you can get.
- tanifa, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4the URL has been "stephenfry-ed" already.
- Mullenkedheim, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4Oh Christ, I laughed.
- zcat, on 02/18/2009, -0/+3I have 10mbps ADSL2+ here as well. And whenever I run a check on speedtest I get to see the graps that show my connection is somewhere around 5 times faster than the national average. That's nice for me, but pretty sad for the national average.
- Taktic, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4Adopt, adapt and improve. Don't punish the bulls for charging through an open fence.
- TheLincoln, on 02/17/2009, -0/+3It seems that governments everywhere are at war with their citizens. We must fight back.
- Laineycakes, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2I agree with Chambler81.
Hell why not just complain about everyone not paying their ISP, and get the whole country at a stand still for a day. That would prove that the law is completely stupid. - busmulla, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2Hmm... 641 diggs and no frontpage?
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Though, relative to GMT it's equally as far west as you can get
- busmulla, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Should be cool now... the site admin has tweaked the swervers so the response time should be fine now.
- sitharus, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1Protest at parliament 12:30 on the 18th (tomorrow!).
- raena, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1Come on digg, front page this thing!
- whoisjohnlai, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1Man, the more i hear about it, the more baffle i get...
why can't we as new zealand, look after fmaily and people in need of help then just crack down on copyright laws, this should be on the bottom of the priority list
don't you reckon?
http://whoisjohnlai.com/blog/?p=53 - badcop666, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1I suspect this has been tacked onto free trade discussions, as a sweetener for negotiations. "Things will go much better for you if you also..."- backed up by media industry lobbying in the US and elsewhere. If so, it clearly indicates the attitudes of those concerned - happy to sell our freedoms down the river at whatever cost, to please their powerful masters.
It is clear that this completely fails to address revenue problems for the media industries - there is no easy relationship between that copy downloaded for free and the dollar not spent in the shop - and thus far the media industry has failed to show what it is.
Hence, the only immediate result of these law changes will be to open the floodgates for further draconian attacks on freedom in general.
For more than 30 years, the US, IMF and Worldbank have driven the economies of other nations through trade negotiation and debt leverage.
New Zealanders - are you citizens of a democracy? if so, then get up and fight for those rights! - mentallyimprd, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1We're doing our best to repeal it - it was hurried through. Besides, you should come anyway, New Zealand: Rocks!
- jackyan, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1The anti-internet mainstream old media would love to see the ’net die. It’s why they keep going on about voyeurs watching internet suicides and never talk about the suicides that netizens stop; or why there are so many nonces on the ’net when in fact the internet has been exposing crims.
- pareidoliac, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1The question must also be asked concerning the role of governments: What is the role of governments in regards to the economic claims and contentions by these parties in a democracy committed to the rule of the many? Surely it is not the role of a democratic government to side with a handful of individual commercial actors against the multitude of everyday produsers/prosumers? Furthermore, haven't these governments already ratified the UDHR and thus committed themselves to the protection of private and public spaces as specified therewith?

- flamen, on 02/17/2009, -0/+0Pure madness.
- Marcopolo99, on 02/16/2009, -3/+2Umm - 10 is 5 times faster than 2.....!
- Marcopolo99, on 02/16/2009, -8/+3NZ is a dear place (I live there) with many attractive qualities.
However, the roads, food shopping, clothes shopping, houses and attitude to dogs all belong in the 19th century. Oh - and the pubs are almost entirely awful places - working mens drinking dens that ought to have sawdust on the floor.
The internet is touted in NZ as The Next Best Thing - yet the average broadband speed is a mere 2MBS. In internet terms, snails crawl faster than that!! No worry about copyright, as no one will have time to wait for your infringement to download.....
