New Zealand Fishermen Land Massive 992lb Squid
news.yahoo.com — "The colossal squid has just arrived in New Zealand and it is likely that it is the first intact adult male Colossal squid to ever be successfully landed," Anderton said.

Comparison. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Giant Squids are just slightly smaller than Colossal Squids, with their maximum lengths being an estimated 43ft and 46 ft, respectively.
The biggest differences, though, are that Giant Squids are thinner, and their tentacle length is much longer than that of a Colossal Squid, who are wide, stout, and have short tentacles. Because of Colossal Squids bodies' largeness, they weigh much more than Giant Squids. Also, Giant Squids' suction cups are lined with small teeth, whereas Colossal Squids have sharp, swiveling hooks.
Who would have thought squid would be some of the most terrifying creatures in the ocean?

- VicHislop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36To be fair, being at the surface of the water was a sign that this animal was dying. It would be like finding a human at the bottom of the sea.

From the article:
"The squid was almost dead when it reached the surface, and the careful work of the crew was paramount in getting this specimen aboard in good condition," Anderton said." - drjsnyder, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1I agree and it WAS NOT CLOSE TO DEATH either as mentioned below..........
"New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton described how it was hauled from the deep by the crew of the San Aspiring.
"It was actually eating a toothfish, which was on a long-line. It was eating it up as it came up," Mr Anderton said."
sad we humans had to kill it. why couldn't they just let it go?
oh me big fisherman, look at my big catch. dude must have a small penis or something he is trying to make up for?? for that matter, i still don't understand why hunters like to "kill," hell shoot it with a tranq gun, study it, then release it! - Joe_rigby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree, they should have left it for its genetic contribution alone - It must have had some good genes.
- adrenaline33, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4your an idiot, it was about to die and its not like they were fishing for squid, it happened to be eating the type of fish that they were after
- Lemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Stupid. Dead or alive, just getting one of things aboard at all is a HUGE scientific find. We know very very little about these creatures. The chances of one surviving in any kind of captivity is next to nil anyway.
Also, fishermen kill fish. That's what they do.

This is truly a remarkable event, I am very interested in hearing the different discoveries this kind of creature will bring to the science community.
*EDIT*
Aren't comments suppose to add something to the story? I think the story a few days back about Eternal September really captures where Digg is headed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September). I am extremely new to digg (2 months), but I can already see a degradation in the community. - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh my god, it's a huge animal...quick kill it!!!

And when will all this squid fever sway us to officially nominate the giant squid as the official mascot of Digg? At this rate, I'm guessing that will be next week.- antifreze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is how media works. - antifreze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1because alot of the people who are posting comments to this thread are less than 12 yrs old. So they understand "squid" and "ocean", but beyond that...

- inurb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else get hungry after seeing the pics?
- M0b1u5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For the real people out there: 450 Kilograms.
Pounds are for idiots and morons. Why would ANYONE claim "992 lbs" when the animal is guesstimated at 450KG? That's just ***** stupid. A smart person would post "1000 lb squid caught". But no, the americans (lowercase 'a') do their pedantic 2.2 conversion and come up with 990. Then add 2 lbs to make it "definitive" and then post.
Lame. And stupid.
