- spriggig, on 07/19/2009, -1/+64Wow. People need to be told not to play video games while driving? Here comes the stupidest generation.
- CoreyTamas, on 07/19/2009, -0/+24But pinball while driving is still okay, right?
- BobTheTaco, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1810 points if you hit someone, +5 if they're moving
- TobiasParker, on 07/20/2009, -2/+15That was because some dumb bitch sued McDonalds.
- lordmike, on 07/20/2009, -1/+14So, they outlawed the new Honda Insight? It has a "Video game" you play while driving to make sure you are driving fuel efficiently... keep the bar in the middle of the display, and you get points.... pretty cool actually... drove one this weekend...
- CoreyTamas, on 07/19/2009, -1/+12Reminds me of the warning they have to put on coffee cups that says "Coffee is hot."
- ghostrc, on 07/20/2009, -0/+10Whats the point of writing a headline like that. Why can't it just be "New York Outlaws Playing Games While Driving"
- Ghostalker, on 07/20/2009, -0/+10"Do what we say, and pay taxes on it too" is practically our state motto.
- vsujohn2, on 07/19/2009, -1/+10Theres a difference between whats common sense and what needs to be legislated. Apparently New York loves to completely remove the former for the sake of its citizens.
- tj007s13, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9I installed a 46" LED TV and Xbox 360 in my Geo Metro for nothing. DAMNIT!
- TobiasParker, on 07/20/2009, -1/+8You cannot fine people for violating common sense, it is common sense you shouldn't drive while drunk either but that does not stop them from making it illegal.
- Ravenlark, on 07/20/2009, -1/+8FTA: "Yes, this is a blanket ban on using all portable electronics, and is probably meant to stop driving while texting"
Doesn't sound so idiotic now does it? - foofightrs777, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6Wouldn't the law against reckless driving take care of this?
- seltzerclause, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5But what about Peggle!
- Joest23, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5Come on, he's just a dumb kid from the stupid ages.
- Futurama - zebraz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5As long as I can still play basketball while driving this law doesn't bother me.
- mastercosby, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6syntaxgs strikes again!
- anarcurt, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Cell phoning while driving is already illegal in NY
- jivatmanx, on 07/20/2009, -1/+5A gridlock eh?
Nothing to unite the parties like passing yet another ridiculous piece of Nanny state legislation.
Nothing to unite the parties like passing laws that only play on fear of young people.
Both at once? Tremendously orgasmic circle jerk. - mattgilberg, on 07/19/2009, -3/+7*****! Jack Thompson infiltrated the New York legislative system!
- Ghostalker, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4I've been commuting between Albany and it's sister cities for years, I've never seen anyone playing video games while driving. I always see women doing makeup, men shaving, people reading, and the usual cell-phone user. All this on one 10mi stretch of highway with exits every 3/4 mile.
Good ol Albany shows it's smarts once again. - zyklon, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Probably the same dumb bitch that made all those hair straightener companies put "Do not insert into orifice when hot" stickers on the straighteners, and her husband is the retard that made companies put "shut engine off when changing belts" stickers on their belts.
- emjaymj, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4"You cannot fine people for violating common sense, it is common sense you shouldn't drive while drunk either but that does not stop them from making it illegal."
Sure you can... stuff like this would fall under a careless driving charge here. There are lots of laws that seem vague in requiring a person to be "reasonable," "careful," etc. In such cases, if the judge/jury finds you violated common sense, you CAN be convicted.
There IS a good reason though for making a separate law for drunk driving, or playing video games for that matter. You can allow for much harsher penalties than a careless driving conviction carries. - ghostrc, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Who told you to put the balm on? I didn't tell you to put the balm on.
- Aidenag, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Let's just pretend that you actually are a good enough driver to be able to play a video game while driving(totally ignoring the fact that NOBODY is a good driver when they are that distracted).
How do you feel about the million other retards who drive like ***** and can't even park properly playing video games while driving at 60+mph on the freeway that you are on? Does it make you feel safer? or do you feel they are risking you're life just to get to the next level or reach xxx amount of points?
Dumb people always seem to forget that there are millions of other cars on the road just waiting to slam into you because their driver wasn't paying attention, or doing something dickbrained. Isn't just yourself you gotta worry about on the road, i've been in 3 accidents in my life. Not a one from anything wrong myself or the driver of the car i was in did. First one was a ***** eating a subway and lost control of the wheel while stuffing his 250lb face, 2nd was a soccer mom on her cell phone, and the 3rd was a 17yr old girl who was such a mental midget that her parents should be in jail for letting her drive in the first place. - Viciousblade, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3I think you forgot your /s at the end of that statement. Are you actually against them passing this law?
- Gemfinder, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Good Ghod, why is this legislation even necessary?!
- Jaime2000, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2@TobiasParker: So either make a law that specifically covers a lot of situations, or make a law that leaves the decision to the judge. Forbidding common sense things one at a time creates inconsistencies (as the article mentions, it is not illegal to drive while shaving) and wastes tax money.
- charlietuna, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I adjust my willie while I drive... frequently. Thankfully that seems okay.
- NoUltimatum, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I've been playing that game for 2 years now. I'm waiting for the new one to come out. STOKED!!!
- phrstbrn, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I'm from the the capital district as well. Although I've never seen anybody do it, one of my high school buddies installed a PS2 and TV into his car. Although I never saw him use it, he claimed to ONLY use it during traffic lights. However, I'm pretty somebody told me he was playing with it on the Northway (don't worry, he was using cruise control).
I never would let him drive. - TVarmy, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I think the third piece of the combo is that it outlaws a completely stupid and random behavior even idiots wouldn't try. It's like outlawing throwing beehives at children.
- emjaymj, on 07/20/2009, -2/+4- Damn*
- Apostrophe missing on the first "can't"
- Lowercase "W"
- Comma (or more appropriately a question mark) missing between "next" and "I"
- Period at the end should be a question mark - phrstbrn, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2A simple law saying "you need to drive with both hands on the wheels, except with manual transmission, where you are allowed to use your second hand on the shifter, or operating any device in the car which is necessary for normal operation" would get rid of the need for most of these dumb laws.
Although it might be technically illegal to change the radio station while the driver or open your window, it would be almost non-enforceable unless you caused an accident (and even then, tough to prove). - Snarfy, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2We have reckless driving laws already. There is no need for a specific law for each possible way of doing it.
Can I still change the radio station? - tightscrummy, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2That's not working out so well in case you haven't noticed.
- pilzburybizkit, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Although you'd never know it.
- suhredayan, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2ban using any kind of gadgets while driving
- appleseed1234, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2your arbitrary Capitalization should be made Out Law because crime Against humanity
- zebraz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2You can't listen to the radio while driving.
And talking to passengers or yourself is not allowed either.
And no thinking to yourself.
Looking in the rearview mirror is only allowed in extreme situations.
Both hands on the wheel.
And no whistling or singing.
Any enjoyable thoughts are completely outlawed.
You are allowed to read the DMV Driver's Manual And Study Guide while in a motor vehicle.
But only as a passenger and if at a stop light. - zebraz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2As if you know more than the government.
;) - Viciousblade, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1yes, I understood the vulgar reference. But this law isn't a piece of Nanny state legislation nor is it playing on the fear of young people. It's used to stop texting while driving as well as anything else on an electronic device, which I find too many people both young and old, do while driving.
I could only hope they would make this illegal in all 50 states and then also make illegal "multitask" driving (i.e putting on makeup, shaving (yes I've seen someone doing it), reading, or talking on a cellphone) while driving. My bluetooth headset may make me look like a pompous douchebag, but I only use it while driving because frankly I know that it distracts me from the road. And I don't even live in a state where the cellphone law has passed yet. - pilzburybizkit, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1This PSA has been brought to you by the Minisrty of Free Transportation.
- twiztidsinz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Have fun with that...
- zebraz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1How about we just ban driving.
It kills more people than tobacco.
Plus the fumes from cars are giving me cancer. - Amazetbm, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1I've seen idiots on the highway texting at 70 mph, like that was cool. If you really have that much business to handle during your commute, take the mass transit.
- Portside, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1What sort of idiot plays with their DS while driving? Really.
