JPII says he could smell the stench from the furnaces in which smouldered the bodies of his fellow countrymen killed by the Nazis, and whose ashes floated down from the chimneys in Auschwitz.
I cannot speak intelligently on the controversy surrounding Pope Pius XII; I would first have to do a little homework. PPXII has his adherents as well as critics; a careful review of both sides would be necessary in order to voice an opinion.
However, as much as it seems Pius feared communism, he also hated it, to his credit, and current thinking would indicate he wanted to ensure that the Catholic Church remained a steadfast champion for human life, especially where innocent, defenseless and disabled persons are concerned.
