Navy Seal Gets Medal of Honor for Sacrificing Himself
cnn.com — On Tuesday, President Bush will present Monsoor's parents with a posthumous Medal of Honor for their son at a White House ceremony. Monsoor was one of the U.S. military's most highly trained combatants, a Navy SEAL. He's the first SEAL to receive the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq.

- whoreable, on 04/09/2008, -25/+6It is sad that the guy died, but if he had the time to say "You cannot take my brothers. I will go in their stead". He could have picked it up and thrown it back.
- aki009, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4With a 3 to 5 second fuse, you are right, but perhaps he was just a bit too far away to do so, or too much time had passed to toss it with a good expectation of it making it outside before going off.

- 9mmCensor, on 04/09/2008, -0/+18As much as I dislike the situation with the war in Iraq, this is a hero who died for the men he was with, greatness such as this is immortalized in the books we read and the hearts and minds of those that loved him.
- Bukowsky, on 04/09/2008, -0/+25NO matter where you stand on the War in Iraq.... you can't deny that this guy made the Ultimate Sacrifice. Please give him the proper respect.
- milou, on 04/09/2008, -11/+3He does deserve the proper respect. And having Bush honor this hero is not the proper respect. It is an insult. This fallen soldier is beyond Bush's action. Honor can never be given by lies, incompetence, and deceit. Would you take a medal of honor from Hitler? Would you take a medal of honor from leaders that are so incompetence that it makes you puke with shame? This soldier did make the ultimate sacrifice. I would do the same, but I would raise from the dead to spit on Bush's face.
- PolishLogic, on 04/09/2008, -1/+12Wow, I missed the story about Bush ordering 6 million Jews to the gas chambers. Could you post that link?
Good to see you find the 'proper respect' to mean ***** all over and politicizing this guy getting the Medal of Honor. Bravo to you.
*****.- milou, on 04/09/2008, -3/+1PolishLogic: I assume you are Polish in someway? You most likely know much more than I do about Hitlerism. And I also apologize about using Godwin's Law. Bad taste.
The issue is about honor and respect. The honor is already done by the act of this soldier. The respect is issued by the United States of America. The problem is the "issuer" of respect representing this great country. How can one look into the eyes of a fool who presents the highest medal of honor. Can you imagine Cheney sitting in the front row with tears in his eyes? Remember, he is the one that says "So" about the men and women who volunteer. Give Cheney a gun and he shoots his friend. Give the honor to serve his country and Bush hides in Louisiana, highjacks the constitution, and holds the country hostage. I am not into Politicizing right or wrong war (too late for that). The act from any fallen soldier requires much better respect than the act from those with the present authority to give it. If "*****" is respect than you just did the soldier a favor.

I would hate to not have friends that I can say I would do the same thing for.
- ElAssoWipo, on 04/09/2008, -16/+2His buddies are also murderers. And he did in fact die because of lies.

- GoodniteMush, on 04/09/2008, -2/+8@ ElAssoWipo - Wow. Is that really a good come back in your mind?
- ElAssoWipo, on 04/09/2008, -5/+2Is that a correct rebuttal in yours?
- dinot, on 04/09/2008, -3/+4You know, I don't like stereotyping, but you've just confirmed my theory that Ron Paul supporters are rabid, angry, foaming-at-the-mouth, vindictive pseudo-intellectual "truthers" who see the world from one angle only... their own. Anyone who doesn't agree is a ***** moron.
And now, replace "ron paul supporters" with "hillary clinton supporters", and notice how it still makes sense.- ElAssoWipo, on 04/09/2008, -8/+2That's ok, it's not like I respect you either. You think this man is a hero because he died saving someone. I don't think this man is a hero because he's a paid murderer and most probably took a lot more lives than he saved. To each his own.
- dinot, on 04/09/2008, -2/+3Taking a lot of lives is part of his job, unfortunately. Throwing himself on top of a grenade was not part of his job description. You're all good and fine behind the anonimity of the internet, but can you say you have the balls to throw yourself onto a grenade to save your co-workers?
For that, the man is a hero. Doesn't matter what job he does. - ElAssoWipo, on 04/09/2008, -5/+2"Taking a lot of lives is part of his job" Which he deliberately chose to do. He also chose to not be a conscious objector.
- dinot, on 04/09/2008, -2/+3So you're saying if you're a lawyer or financial supervisor of some firm that rips people off, and you sacrifice yourself for your colleagues by throwing yourself onto a grenade, then you deserve what you get? There are plenty of corrupt police officers and firemen who take advantage of their authority, does that mean all the cops and firemen who died on 9/11 are not heroes?
- ElAssoWipo, on 04/09/2008, -4/+2Wow that's bad attempt at a strawman. You should've attacked my lack of a sense of duty or patriotism.
Plus you just equated this man to a corrupt police officer, have a little respect. - dinot, on 04/09/2008, -2/+3WTF? I was defending him. You're the one saying he's a murderer. And how was my rebuttal a strawman? I was providing an ANALOGY.
Ad hominem, strawman, red herring, I'm so sick of these words. It's like people use them as an easy way to not provide a legitimate come back while appearing to know what they are talking about at the same time. - ElAssoWipo, on 04/09/2008, -5/+2You must hear them a lot.
Those words refer to logical fallacies. There's no reason to attack an argument that's logically impossible.
Your rebuttal became a strawman when you used the words "so you're saying" then added something you pulled out of your ass. The analogy is logically connected to the strawman and therefore serves no purpose.
And an analogy is drawing a comparison in order to show a similarity in some respect: as in comparing.
There's no comeback possible if there's no substance to being with.
And a rebuttal must include the argument it responds to in order to be accurate. That wasn't a rebuttal it was another argument based on a strawman.
A proper analogy would be a hitman that protects his fellow hitmen while assassinating people.
The problem is that the entire Iraq war constitutes a crime against humanity and has nothing to do with defending your country. As a matter of fact, he had the duty to refuse unlawful orders. Fighting in Iraq is therefore against his duty.
The only heroes in this are the ones who gave up their own freedoms in order to avoid destroying their integrity and engaging a country that doesn't deserve to get attacked.
THAT is heroic. The act is also heroic, but it's in an unethical context: hence the hitman. It's also why nobody answers my "if hitler took a bullet for his wife" question. - dinot, on 04/09/2008, -3/+3Of course it's in an unethical context. So why don't you complain about this ***** to George Bush and blame him rather than some guy you don't know whose ENTIRE BODY WAS RIPPED APART BY A ***** GRENADE.
You want context? There's you're context. - ElAssoWipo, on 04/09/2008, -4/+2Ad hominem.

- AoiTakuma, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8A truly selfless hero. It is unfortunate that stories like this take 2 years to get out, when the stories of the bad apples get out immediately. I oppose the war strongly, but I still support our troops.
- bicyclethief, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1I don't see why you needed the "but" in there. Opposing the war *is* supporting the troops and the USA.

This guy deserves the medal of honor - such a brave man, a man I'd be honored to serve with. - chrisgeleven, on 04/09/2008, -1/+10R.I.P. You sacrificed yourself to save at least two of your fellow soldiers, without hesitating for a second. That is the true meaning of honor.
- Alix7, on 04/09/2008, -7/+1He's...Arab?
- mooseontheloose, on 04/09/2008, -10/+2That's all it takes to get a Medal of Honor these days? Being dumb enough to jump on a bomb?

- Devan612, on 04/09/2008, -3/+1Most people that recieve it are already dead.
But your right, that one gesture should not be enough.
- wriststrong16, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6I've opposed this war since the outset, but that man is a hero in every sense of the word. Not many people would risk their own life so willingly to save the lives of others.
There isn't really anything that requires more bravery or character than that. - jaquestrap, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6I honor this man, and I believe that he is a true hero however, I do not believe that he literally said, "You cannot take my brothers. I will go in their stead." I believe that was just to add effect to the statement the the fellow Navy SEAL was making. Some support for this is that in the quote it said that he looked death in the eye. I truly do not believe that he shouted anything larger than a few words before he jumped onto the grenade, and if he did I do not believe that in that it would be a statement that used such high grammar as "I will go in their stead." Not meaning any offense to the fallen soldier, but that sounds a bit like something out of a Shakespeare play. (Not the act of sacrifice, just the saying).
- jaquestrap, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Also a bit farther down it shows that he shouted grenade and then jumped, not that whole statement. So for all of you saying that he shouted the statement, please read the article before posting.
- Devan612, on 04/09/2008, -6/+2The odds that it happened like the story reads is ***** zero.
I was in the military and have trained with the SEALS.
After the lies about Jessica Lynch, how do you know the truth?
BTW, the life expectancy of a SEAL is 0%, just like they are trained. - noseeme, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Oh man, no matter how much brotherhood and comradery I have with a group of people, I would never sacrifice my own life. I salute him.
- massminority, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8This guy is a BAMF who killed himself to save his friends. Anyone who does not think that is courageous despite the fact that they have NO CHOICE for being in Iraq and are doing their JOB, needs to realize that troops don't choose who they fight. To take away the honor of a man like this and call it worthless because of where it took place is ignorance.
- yellowcakewalk, on 04/09/2008, -6/+1Of course they have a choice. They can refuse to go. We all must do our part to oppose the criminals that have hijacked our government.
- DreadPirate, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6That would be disobeying an order from a superior officer, and would get them arrested. Are you trying to get our soldiers arrested, Yellow? You're already insulting fallen soldiers before they have even be buried, so I shouldn't be surprised at your absolute lack of any tact or morals.
