- zurama, on 11/30/2008, -6/+117Oh my dear God!! What an unspeakable act. What does that say about a country that allows such violence and abuse of women, who are at the very core of any society. They give life and they nurture our children. What a backwards country!!! Shame on them! I'm digging and sharing this video!!
- zurama, on 11/30/2008, -1/+86What a wonderful son she has. Perhaps he will grow up and be a real man, unlike his bastard father!!!!
- brandita, on 11/30/2008, -2/+70This is where government is supposed to step in and protect rights.
- Anomaly100, on 11/30/2008, -2/+57This has been happening over there for some time now. Forced circumcisions on young girls, mutilating them in the process, by their father at home so that they can never enjoy sex happens far too often. When a man wants a divorce, usually overlooked, is the not so uncommon practice of setting their wives on fire...while they're alive. It's horrendous and needs as much attention as possible in the media. Check out Amnesty Int'l if interested in this kind of thing, and helping.
- northwatuppa, on 11/30/2008, -0/+43Hard to look at. Truly heartbreaking. The very definition of senseless brutality.
- GrandmaSheila, on 11/30/2008, -2/+44For all our chest-thumping about "spreading freedom & democracy", we seldom do anything to our allies or conquered provinces with regard to their various culturally-sanctioned atrocities against women. I'd really like to see the new government take the lead on pressuring our "friends" to stop ignoring the problem. But that won't happen
Bride burning, honor killings, female genital mutilation, children sold into marriage, beatings and rape, all "women's issues" and of course, of no interest to the murderous capitalists here. It might hurt somebody's feelings to suggest that women are human beings, and should enjoy all rights and legal protections that men do.
. - peheimbach, on 12/01/2008, -3/+28I'm constantly frustrated by the realization that even if our (now previous) government(s) had *wanted* to do something about the *cultural* component of these hideous crimes, it would have to contend with the *religious* component that's drummed into adherents from their earliest days. A quick look at the first chapters (especially) and the first books of the Hebrew, Christian (and possibly, I'm unsure) Islamic scriptures detail a culture which holds *women* responsible for the "sins" (evil tendencies, since Hebrew doesn't really have a word for discrete sins) of the human race, as well as the degradation of our physical world from the "perfect state" in which it supposedly began. You'll see the G-d of the Hebrew scriptures exacting lesser penalties for crimes against women, and in general, valuing them less.
I'll gladly stand corrected on this, but I suspect that if one were to look at the holy writings of other cultures in this particular region, you'll find similar attitudes.
I hate to be a kill-joy. I've volunteered in women's centers, and the treatment of women as either lesser humans, or worse, as property, drives me NUTS. (My wife is smarter/wiser than me, even if she won't admit it, and where many men in various cultures would find that threatening, I value that deeply.) But I find myself asking "How difficult has it been to legalise a woman's right to choose abortion in this country -- leave alone the question of how difficult it has been to MAINTAIN that right?"
But we're not going to make much headway on this issue, past treating the symptoms, until we find a way to ROOT-OUT the deep religious sense (call it energy source, if you will) behind such crimes. Which is not to say that we shouldn't treat the symptoms, we just need to be prepared for a long battle.
But I remain deeply depressed by the idea of trying to change one, let alone *many* religions to the extent necessary to see women treated as equals. My hat is off to all those who manage to continue the fight, without burnout. - pintomp3, on 12/01/2008, -0/+21funny how the most backwards countries run by religious fundamentalists are our allies.
- Anomaly100, on 11/30/2008, -2/+24True, but violence against women is far, far more predominate. Women's shelters, domestic violence (largely predominate), rape (do I need to say how predominate?), etc. In India, if a woman cheats on her husband, they are thrown on the street, marked and spat on by passersby, I could go on and on. Just how is it, that men aren't getting a fair shake here?
- RedStormRising, on 12/01/2008, -0/+20Wait, it's *increasing*? Has this ***** has been common enough to be a statistic in that country?
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+18Some countries are more socially developed than others. While ours is nowhere near ideal, we can see how underdeveloped a country like Pakistan is.
We had our "Second Great Awakening" in the late 18th - early 19th century. They are in need of their own. - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -2/+21Not over there.
- bloodinmystool, on 12/01/2008, -1/+19Female circumcision is a misleading phrase. It often involves removal of the clitoris, inner labia, and stitching the vaginal opening almost completely closed.
This, along with non-sterile instruments and a lack of available antibiotics, usually results in long-term problems. Often, when a woman has her period, the menses can't be expelled, causing severe discomfort and oftentimes, infection.
Male circumcision is quite civilized in comparison, but serves no real purpose and should not be practiced, in my opinion. - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -3/+20Yeah, it doesn't look like a civil rights movement will be happening there anytime soon.
In the meantime, it's probably best for women to wear veils -- if only for protection. - CoolHandLuke70, on 12/01/2008, -0/+15Horrible.
- sandman979, on 12/01/2008, -0/+15You can always measure the civilized state of a country by just looking how they treat women...
- DubiousDrewski, on 12/01/2008, -2/+17Woah, NoCommies, I don't think you understand. Circumcision for women is much different, it's much worse and it actually destroys their ability to enjoy sex. Male circumcision, while still pretty messed up, doesn't do that kind of damage at all.
- GoKings, on 12/01/2008, -0/+14It says that they are trying to raise money for her to get back her eyesight and track down this guy and bring him to justice. Where's the website where I can donate?
- hmalik, on 12/01/2008, -0/+14It's been while, I heard any good news from my back home, truly sad :(
These crimes are committed because culprits know that they won't be charged for their crimes. Unfortunately, Judicial system is broken in Pakistan especially for poor and helpless people of country. They don't have money to bribe police, lawyers, judges to pursue justice. It was first time in history of Pakistan, their voices were getting heard by Chief Justice of Pakistan (Iftikhar Chaudhary). But, guess what, west supported dictator Musharraf sacked the judiciary because they asked government to implement human rights and now current so-called corrupt democratic elected president Zardari, will not re-instate him because he will question his corruption.
I plea to western nation, if you are sincere to the future of this nuclear nation, please help them to have independent judiciary. Any nation in world can survive only because of independent judiciary, regardless of what religion they follow. - MCA2142, on 12/01/2008, -2/+15Inaccurate.
Religion isn't "born." It is "Fabricated." - stormofswords, on 12/01/2008, -1/+14Oh man, you're so damn smart it's like wow I never thought about "societal viewpoints". I must have been blinded by my Judeo-Christian societal teachings when I thought to question men throwing acid on the faces of women to disfigure them for life. It's like, what if THEY'RE right and I'M wrong?!?!
Where did you get your PhD? How can I enroll in your lectures? - Gemfinder, on 11/30/2008, -1/+13And carry baking soda.
- nVious, on 12/01/2008, -4/+16This is what spawned from the area where religion was born. Not surprising in the least bit.
- Gemfinder, on 11/30/2008, -1/+13In India, if a woman doesn't meet the family's standards for dowry, she gets set on fire. The usual dowry "standards:" televisions for everyone in the husband's family, motor scooters, et alia.
In India, if a woman is widowed, she gets thrown onto the street.
In India, the husband's mother gets to pick on her daughter-in-law with impunity, assuming the family doesn't decide her dowry wasn't good enough and burn her. - NotYourProdigy, on 12/01/2008, -0/+11Cowardly
- JackpotCity, on 12/01/2008, -0/+11That's just plain old ***** wrong. I really feel sorry for women in those countries, they are treated worse than abandoned animals.
- bloodinmystool, on 12/01/2008, -0/+11This is less a religious issue and more of a cultural one. Nowhere in the Qur'an (I believe) does it say it is acceptable to mutilate one's spouse.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -10/+21Violence against anyone is reprehensible, regardless of gender/sexual orientation. It is not exclusive to women.
- przemeklach, on 12/01/2008, -0/+11Disgusting. I'm furious that I can't do anything about this.
- thetechgeek, on 12/01/2008, -0/+10I have nothing to say. WTF IS WRONG WITH THE HUMAN RACE.
- luchid, on 12/01/2008, -2/+12Only on digg do you get comments about your IQ by a guy whose nickname is "hookedonjesus".
- peters1023, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9Deplorable and barbaric. Makes one lose a little faith in humanity every time something like this hits the news. Too bad it happens so often....
- mypetridish, on 12/01/2008, -1/+10sigh, this has little to do with Islam. Islam condemns improper treatment of women. I have a lot to say about how western culture treat their women but I don't generalize Christianity as vouching for them.
learn how to tell the difference before someone calls you a bigot. - bloodinmystool, on 12/01/2008, -2/+11Osama and Friends!
Saturdays at 9am - kawaiirobo, on 12/01/2008, -1/+10You know, when I read about things like this I suddenly feel a bit better that America is stereotyped as fat and lazy instead of ***** psychotic.
- DubiousDrewski, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9They didn't outright say it was acceptable, but they did mention that only 2% of the criminals who do it are ever punished. I think that's pretty telling of how much they condone it.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9I completely agree with you. But who is to blame? Is it religion, the governments, society, or a combination of the three?
"For all our chest-thumping about 'spreading freedom & democracy'"
Hopefully we've all come to a point where we realize that governments are, in almost all cases, self-serving. If the people do not actively partake in the democratic process, or are misinformed and undereducated about the issues, the system will not work. Numerous men and women since the birth of this nation have attempted to get the people off their lazy asses informed, and willing to participate this direct role with government. The failure of these philosophies is a good explanation as to why we have such ***** government today. With your grounding in History, I am sure you're well aware of this. - gnixon70, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9While the men of the so called civilized nations rush to become progressive and understanding of other religions and cultures to the point of a fault, I think its going to be the women that has to rise up and say enough is enough.
I think we all know what cultures and religions are primarily doing this, its just that everyone is afraid to say it in fear of being called a raciest and non progressive.
Then you see things like this, what a culture would do to their own citizens, and you got to at one point say enough is enough cause if they have this low of opinion of their own women, their opinion of people outside of their country, religion and culture have to be a lot lower. Anyway, If I sound angry, I am. - Murdats, on 12/01/2008, -4/+13@nocommies
no, have you? oh and if you do, stop projecting - MCA2142, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9"He was never arrested by the police."
No justice here. At least not the type of justice as I understand it. To me, this is worse than killing a person. - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -5/+14rofl, unfortunately idiots like ^ this are the problems in every society
- pyrobaby, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8@NoCommies:
And how many of "the feminists" did you discuss this with before you got that consensus of yours? WHat a crock of *****. Just because we're talking about not wanting our ***** cut off doesn't mean we want bad things to happen to your privates just because you're not a woman.
I've actually read a lot about the whole circumcision issue... I'm not sure what the right answer to it is because some guys agree with you that it's mutilation, and then there are some guys who voluntarily go through with it in adulthood and say it's no big deal. Obviously if it gets botched, that's horrifying, but I basically tend to stay out of it since you guys can't seem to agree on it, and if I don't want you dictating my coochie, I don't want to dictate your wang. - thejokker, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8thats because the books of religion were written and assembled in a time when women were consider less important. You do realize that man 'edited' the bible right?
- electrosheep, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8Um... but 80% of victims are women and 'The attacks are typically the work of men against their wives who have "dishonored them." ' Women *may* be guilty of doing it as well as men, but probably in far lesser numbers. ( I have yet to see a case, but I don't doubt it..) But the main perpetrators of acid attacks ARE men.
- acegi, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8'as a muslim' means nothing in this case.
it's the culture of extreme patriarchy. people who thinks their penis mean so much has to be discouraged in the culture itself, and promote the liberty of women in these regions. that's the only way. - sutro33, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7Here's a link to the organization featured in the video: the Pakistan Progressive Women's Association: http://www.pwaisbd.org/
- greenfyre, on 12/01/2008, -5/+12Guantanimo?
One in three women here sexually assaulted in her life?
One in ten in a physically abusive relationship? - MASH007, on 12/01/2008, -1/+8Just wanted to clarify. Women have no "original sin" and are not degraded in Islamic scriptures. What you see is cultural practices morphed into religious beliefs.
- Waterrat, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6 If a woman did this to a man over there, she would be arrested and stoned to death...Can we say "double standard?"
