- badqat, on 11/08/2009, -2/+50FTA: The feds say that in the last 10 years, more than $1 billion worth of marijuana has come through the reservation.
Hey, how about we tax that $1 billion and end this silly "war" on drugs? - mah2cent, on 11/09/2009, -2/+26I just have to ask: by what right does the NYPD to trespass on Mohawk territory? It is a sovereign nation by act of Congress. Oh, yeah, I forgot, nobody cares about the rule of law, the constitution or treaties with foreign countries. If they disagree with you, just invade them. Let me think, Iraq, Afghanistan, Viet Nam, Panama, etc.
Just to refresh your collective memories, here is a list of American's wars:
http://americanhistory.about.com/library/timelines ...
I bet you didn't expect that.
Probably nobody cares.
We need to end all wars including the war on drugs, war on terrorism, war on poverty, war on... you can fill in the blanks. All are a complete waste of money and end up making most citizens criminals. For my part, the worst war is the government's war on personal liberty. - RogerStrong, on 11/09/2009, -4/+22Perhaps, but referring to them as "native Americans", is disparaging to most everyone else.
If you were born in the U.S., and your parents were born there, and your grandparents were born there, then you most certainly are "native American". Calling them - and only them - native American, implies that you are not.
I believe the proper term is "aboriginal". - govsucks, on 11/09/2009, -2/+20Thank you Mohawk nation
-A Cherokee from Kentuck - EndouOuto, on 11/09/2009, -1/+18MOHAWK NATION OF AWESOME!!!
- Ninh, on 11/09/2009, -0/+16You create a market by making things illegal, you've got to expect people making money off it.
- tribtal, on 11/09/2009, -1/+16With this logic you could say that Europeans aren't native to Europe, Asians aren't native to Asia, etc.
- gankige, on 11/09/2009, -3/+15Correct me if I'm wrong... But isn't "Indian" still considered a disparaging term for "Native Americans"?
- kinerry, on 11/09/2009, -3/+15wrongo, you call us by our tribe name
- rev0lution, on 11/09/2009, -0/+11I am from Salamanca NY which is the capital of the Seneca Nation which resides on the Allegany Indian Reservation and the Indians do not pay taxes except federal income tax. Although I am across the state I believe the treaty covers all the tribes in NY (Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Mohawk). On top of this benefit they also have their own health care system, fire department, police department (which are the only ones who have jurisdiction besides federal to arrest natives on the reservation) and they get quarterly checks about 3k since the day of birth as long the mother is registered with the nation.
- cambob76, on 11/09/2009, -1/+12Then the only natives are Africans who live in Africa.
- LonesomeFighter, on 11/08/2009, -3/+11do we tax the natives? i thought they got to live their life tax free. like even their gas stations and cigarettes aren't taxed.
- MWeather, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8"wrongo, you call us by our tribe name"
Us who? Indians? Native Americans? What is the name of this group of people we're supposed to call by their tribe's name? - Cilicious, on 11/09/2009, -1/+9I usually use the term Native American myself, but I have talked to Indians, Native Americans, whatever, who are fine with Indian. Sherman Alexie uses the term, the American Indian Movement has never dropped it.
- funkyloki, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8We pay taxes on coffee you moron, everytime we buy it, (depending on where you live) whether it is the sales tax at the coffee shop or at the store. We pay no taxes on the billion dollars the NYPD says the Indians have made on the marijuana, not sales tax or a sin tax.
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/09/2009, -2/+10Blame Columbus for that name...
- tgc1, on 11/09/2009, -1/+8That was my question as well. Natives are sovereign. The US government cannot interfere with their land and/or what they do.
- vishuzmanuva, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9Legalize ganja already! Although, I'm confident this country is heading towards some legalization and taxation. But, so long as our government does not include so many pro-Drug War politicians.
- pinchduck, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9Stick to your guns, Mohawk Nation. Assert your sovereignty and escort the police off your land.
- jp2535, on 11/09/2009, -5/+11I'm a very small part Indian so I'm allowed to call them out on that BS. LOL ***** you
- Kirmz, on 11/09/2009, -1/+7$600 an ounce? Shiiiiit. Good hydro runs $220/oz up here in canada.
- tim620, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6I'm a white guy living on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. My native friends pay the same sales tax and income tax I do. Although NY law might be different.
- MWeather, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6You got caught 4 times in a year? You're doing it wrong.
- PeppermintPig, on 11/09/2009, -2/+7"Hey, how about we tax that $1 billion and end this silly "war" on drugs?"
The government would keep most of that money for themselves and use it to justify more spending rather than covering the programs they've already set in place...That's assuming they ended the war on drugs, which is already quite profitable for them now, so why bother? - dhughes, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5 It doesn't matter.
There was a cigarette smuggling operation between the US and Canada which made millions that was also run by native people, although I don't know if it was the Mohawk. - bladzalot, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4NYPD wanted to go play some poker that is all, once they find out that all the blankets the indians gave them are infected with SARS, we are going to play cowboys and indians all over again...
- RogerStrong, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5And if you want to refer to North American tribes in general?
- eugenie, on 11/09/2009, -5/+9good one, mohawk nation. native americans deserve to get some payback for all the disgusting things they've had to put up with. and yes, it's pot. for christ's sake, can we just get over this whole pot is evil thing yet? of course, the NYPD is all over anything that might make native americans some profit. some ***** never changes.
- gurudrew, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4That's what happens when you make the taxes too high.
- 11oops, on 11/09/2009, -5/+9The NYPD is travelling to India?
- Brahstradamus, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4lol that tribe brings in beasters. I can't believe we waste our resources with crap like this.
- TheEggAndI, on 11/09/2009, -4/+8well im indian. actually indian. as in...my parents came here (america) from india. so i certainly get somewhat annoyed at this misnomer.
- johndavidjack, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4@rev0lution
I'm originally from Angola, and I know a bunch of Indians, and yes, it's all true. When it comes to the police, basically you can do whatever the ***** you want on the rez, provided you know some Indians, or the indians don't catch you out late at night on a dark road.
Place is legit though... - Bamboolemur, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5The NATION OF AKWESASNE advertises a lot here in montreal, telling us of the wonders of their casinos and of why we should go lose our money in their gambling joints as opposed to our own!!
LEGALIZE THE WEED (and stop the greed). - geezor, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4Well, I know a chinese dude whose great-grandparents built the railways in california, and he's still considered a foreigner. I've never head anyone say "European-American", but we do always hyphenate asians and africans are "Asian-American" and "African-American"
- PhoenixSmasher, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3Seeing as how they're already using that route to smuggle in tax-free booze and cigs, I think that's a little hard to do at the moment.
- tim620, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3@rev0lution:
South Dakota doesn't have a state income tax, but they do have a state sales tax and natives pay state sales tax, as well as federal income tax. The Rosebud reservation also has its own health care, fire and police. Actually the state troopers are not allowed on the Rosebud, except to transport prisoners, etc. But Feds do have jurisdiction, so sometimes the FBI or US Marshalls accompany local tribal police on drug raids, etc. The Lakota on the Rosebud do not get the quarterly checks that you are talking about. The tribes don't have as much money out here. - catpuke, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3That reminds me of the scene with Alice Cooper in Wayne's World
- yttrstein, on 11/09/2009, -2/+5Bleh, the Mohawk weed is better known around these parts as "Queens Greens" and is only very slightly superior to the Mexican shwag you can still find by the quarter bag in the west village. That is: It's freezer burned, old, bad tasting crap.
If you like your weed aromatic and strong, one need look no further than the delivery services, which generally deliver a far better variety. And frankly the cops are just going through the motions--- I'm sure someone's up for re-election or a promotion or something, so everyone better look busy. The fact is, I've been caught with a lit joint in my hand on the streets of NYC four times in the last year, and not once did I even get a ticket. - tim620, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4@EndouOuto: If you flew half way around the world to a place you were going to live for the rest of your life and the natives of the area were called "Americans". I'm sure you would have a hard time with it too.
I personally think calling Native Americans (or First Nations) people "Indians" is confusing (especially since I have so many friends from India). - Kirmz, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Pfft. That's street price. I pay 170-180
- tim620, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2The "peace pipe" is called Chanupa in the Lakota language is very sacred to them. It would never be used to get high.
- tim620, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3I don't know why you are being dugg down, I thought your question was funny!!
- MWeather, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3"The government would keep most of that money for themselves and use it to justify more spending rather than covering the programs they've already set in place."
So all we'd get is more government services for no increase in taxes? Well forget it, then. - BoneheadFarker, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2You're over-paying...
- rev0lution, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Yea the Senecas are taken care of pretty well and take care of their own pretty well as well. They don't have to pay sales tax on the reservation and they can do pretty much do anything they want on the reservation which is sad because I have seen them get away with a lot of BS. Another thing about the checks, if they stay on the reservation until they are 23 then they get checks for life where ever they live. They also get free college education and school supplies (laptops, books, paper, etc.).
- Kyan, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2You're not black by chance, are you?
- Colecoman1982, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Of course, that same amount of pot wouldn't be worth anything close to $1 billion if it weren't illegal but the point still stands. On top of any money we would get from taxes, we would also be able to either pay much less in law enforcement/prison costs or be able to re-target those efforts towards other, more important, criminal activities.
- Tom10803, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I'm moving to [near] Canada!
- MWeather, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2That's what I said.
