That officer should be charged with assault and released from his job. It's scumbags like him that give the hardworking men and women of the NYPD a bad name. - dstopping, on 07/28/2008, -27/+684Uh, wow. I don't usually buy claims of police brutality, but that video is absolutely insane.
- K0NY, on 07/28/2008, -29/+542Police deserve respect. ***** don't deserve to be police. Fire this bastard.
- revolute, on 07/28/2008, -5/+384YouTube justice shall prevail. Take this cop off the streets
- monkeynotrobot, on 07/28/2008, -20/+287The cop has been suspended.. http://www.myfoxny.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?con ...
As much as I hate referencing Fox News.. - go_vt_hokies, on 07/29/2008, -3/+241The sad thing is that if this wasn't posted on YouTube, the cop would have won the he said/he said.
- culthero, on 07/28/2008, -15/+212Cop puts his hips into it doesn't he
- MACady, on 07/28/2008, -23/+215Hey, if the president can break the law anyone can right?
- wissler, on 07/29/2008, -8/+179There are probably hundreds of incidents like this for each one captured on video. Stripped of his badge and gun? Give me a break. He should be in jail.
- neps, on 07/28/2008, -2/+165Being assigned to a desk job isn't being suspended. He still gets paid.
- Rixta, on 07/28/2008, -15/+173What a ***** of a cop.....hopefully this video will get seen enough times so that he gets his come-comeuppance.
- WesTheYeTi, on 07/28/2008, -22/+179Brutality much?
- anagoge, on 07/29/2008, -1/+136Officer Rivieri would be proud.

- screamthenrun, on 07/29/2008, -1/+111Thankfully:
*UPDATE: The AP is reporting that the police officer in the video has been stripped of his badge and gun and the NYPD has "placed the unidentified officer on desk duty pending the outcome of a department investigation."*
I usually defend the police on digg, but that was absolutely horrific.
Even if the bicyclist did something stupid off camera like flip him the bird or swear at him, there is absolutely no reason for the officer to deck the guy. [I suspect that the bicyclist didn't do anything like that anyways.] - themdjunkie, on 07/29/2008, -0/+96If you notice the officer had his eye on that guy way before he got there. The officer knew way ahead of time he was gonna knock this guy off.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -17/+109This seriously got me so ***** pissed.
- alambadalal, on 07/29/2008, -1/+88What's scary is that if this hadn't been caught on tape, like so many things are not, that guy would have a criminal record that said he assaulted a cop. Think how ***** up your life would be if you had to try and get a job with that ***** hanging over you, and all he did was ride a bike in public. Anyone who thinks this is no big deal should step back and think about the same thing happening to you....like I said, scary.
- GorfTron, on 07/29/2008, -4/+84Was this man wearing essence of donuts?
- ysaberi, on 07/28/2008, -37/+111Cops are totally out of control in this country. This is unbelievable, might as well be in China!
- grungegbunny, on 07/29/2008, -17/+88Police need to earn respect.
- alphex, on 07/29/2008, -0/+67he didn't snap... he picked a bike out of the crowd and went for it... why? who the hell knows.
This was a decision made by the cop, to knock some biker off the bike and on to the ground.
***** absurd, I hope he loses his job. - nobody98, on 07/29/2008, -9/+69I just don't get it. Why are cops so ***** up in america? What's their beef?
- HypocriteDigg, on 07/29/2008, -14/+74That's why they do it, because of the people like you who don't 'buy' the claims of brutality.
- Kirschey, on 07/28/2008, -4/+59What happened to protect the innocent?
- blackinthmiddle, on 07/29/2008, -0/+55As someone who grew up in Bronx, New York, I've had numerous run-ins with cops. You only have to have one run in to become sensitive to other's claims. Unfortunately, if you've never been in a situation where a cop has gone berserk on you, you simply can't imagine the claims of others as being legit.
FTA: "The AP is reporting that the police officer in the video has been stripped of his badge and gun and the NYPD has "placed the unidentified officer on desk duty pending the outcome of a department investigation.""
That's police speak for, "We haven't fired the guy and he's still drawing the same salary he normally would. Like all other cases where we ***** up, we'll drag this out long enough by calling it a "department investigation" (really, what's there to investigate here?), knowing that you the public will eventually forget. We'll then place said officer back in his original role, pay the biker $75K to get rid of him and life will continue with cops continuing to be ***** and getting away with it." - thentro, on 07/28/2008, -19/+72It looks like the cop snapped when he thought the biker was going to run into him. Never mind he stepped out in front of the bike, or that the biker was swerving to get around him. But that would explain the "attempted assault" charge.
Also, that cop is lucky that the biker was not seriously injured. When he flew off he comes real close to going head first into that pole. - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+50Needs to be fired plain and simple. That was an assault & battery on an unarmed citizen.
- ctpmn, on 07/29/2008, -2/+51The officer with him should have arrested him on the spot, they should both be fired and the assaulter should go to jail or get a hefty fine and be on probation. Police should not be above the law, it makes us all loose faith in the system.
- monkeynotrobot, on 07/28/2008, -6/+55^ removal of badge and gun...
- neonoodle, on 07/29/2008, -2/+48From New Jersey
- CrazyForSW, on 07/29/2008, -3/+48And cops wonder why some people hate them... Give somebody a badge and a gun and here you go.
- Charun, on 07/29/2008, -6/+51You have no clue what's going on in that video, do you?
- themastersb, on 07/29/2008, -0/+43Stripping the officer of his badge/gun and giving him a desk job is too good for him.
- NegativeDigg, on 07/29/2008, -16/+58These pigs should be video taped at all times!
- schneid4323, on 07/29/2008, -24/+66***** the police.
- thedoreenster, on 07/28/2008, -17/+57oh, how i love NY's finest. just another example of what a joke the NYPD is. where do they get these a-holes?!
- androidland, on 07/28/2008, -13/+52That's a pretty terrifying video. I still don't understand how they can give out tickets for not riding in the bike lane, when it's not against the law. What a bunch of 'tards.
- farfromsubtl, on 07/29/2008, -4/+43You sir, are an idiot.
- fuzzmeister, on 07/29/2008, -3/+41At least the 2nd half of that has been done already: "A New York City police officer was stripped of his gun and badge after a video posted on YouTube showed him body-checking a bicyclist during Friday's Critical Mass bicycle ride."
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10001149-93.html? ... - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -1/+38Especially since the guy could have been seriously hurt if he hit his head on the curb. That cop was unbelievable. What an *****.
- Rsulliv1, on 07/29/2008, -2/+39I think that a lot of cops were the jocks/bullys in high school. They're the type that think high-school football was the time of their lives. And, the thing is, it was. Once they left high school, they realized that it didn't really matter. But, instead of doing something about it (e.g., college), they decided to go where their high school idol went which was the police force.
I also think that good/smart cops get promoted off of these beat jobs pretty quick. They go to Narc or detective or some non-uniform role. IMO, there's nothing scarier than an old beat cop. They're the ones who've been working for decades and never were promoted to a "thinking" role.
Compare it to this, if someone worked at a department store and started out as a cashier. What would you think of them if they were still a cashier after 25 years? What would they think of themselves? they would be seeing young "hot-shot" kids getting promoted after six months or a year. then the "rookies" would be the assistant manager, then manager (i.e., their boss). Of course they would be full of self-loathing at that point.
Same thing for long-term beat cops (or rookies who want to be "in" with those old beat cops), when they see anyone young with potential in their lives, they are jealous. The problem is that these people can ruin and/or inconvenience the lives of the general society.
It's irony at its best.
(Note: I know this is pretty harsh, but it's a work in progress. But, note that I leave room for plenty of good cops in my hypothesis :) ) - Rixta, on 07/28/2008, -0/+36That's worse than just a regular comeuppance in case you were wondering! Sorry, typo!
- hiphoc, on 07/29/2008, -3/+38When did NYPD have a good name? This is a systemic problem. Its been going on for 30 years or more in NYPD. The corrupt people the top promote corrupt people to take their positions. Sad to say that every structure of power in this country is now operating in this manner. State, local gov't, the Feds, School boards. Power tends to corrupt. Until we all start standing up for each other ***** is gonna get crazy, its already out of hand.
- maceelk, on 07/29/2008, -2/+37the update at the bottom of the page seems to be pointing to that happening.
- dougmc, on 07/29/2008, -1/+36Assault and battery are crimes. If something doesn't come up that justifies that sort of behavior (which seems unlikely, but we don't know what led up to that point), he should be arrested and go to trial AND lose his job.
- farfromsubtl, on 07/29/2008, -0/+34Because no one wants to be tazed.
- bundwallah, on 07/29/2008, -1/+35The ***** still has a job though. He needs to be charged like Joe Public would.
- vtnerd, on 07/29/2008, -3/+35Why digg him down? If this wasn't on video do you think that officer would have faced any consequences for his actions? Cops should be on microphone and camera at all times when on duty to keep them honest - it's the only thing that works.
- TheSabre, on 07/29/2008, -2/+34You're absolutely right. But lawsuits don't file themselves. This cyclist needs to take the first step in filing assault charges.
