My nine hours waiting in the heat at an Israeli checkpoint
latimesblogs.latimes.com — My adventures as an Arab American journalist crossing in and out of Israel have already been documented here. But even for someone who goes in expecting delays, aggressive questioning and the occasional strip search, my experience on Sunday leaving the Gaza Strip through the Eretz border crossing was a shock.

- thelaxdude, on 07/25/2008, -15/+17Dude, man up. If the border was closed, the border was closed. If the system at the US border is down, no one is crossing in from Canada and we are on friendly terms. There has not been sporadic rocket fire going south over the 49th or a history of suicide bombing.
- FrankHope, on 07/26/2008, -10/+4FTA: "It's simply not something you would do to people you regarded as people instead of dangerous animals."
- drz130, on 07/27/2008, -1/+6IF the goal of those dangerous animals wasn't the murder of innocent civilians, they would be regarded as people.
- MarkEarhart, on 07/27/2008, -7/+1If you would get the ***** off of that stolen land your country is on and stop torturing the rightful inhabitants they might stop firing rockets at you. Be glad I'm not President of the united states or their army would surpass your own!!!
- decafmatan, on 07/27/2008, -0/+8Damn.. I have no argument, time to use the "stolen land" line.
- yonoz, on 07/27/2008, -0/+7I think everyone should be glad you're not President of the United States (that's with capital U and S, traitor!).
- drz130, on 07/27/2008, -1/+6IF the goal of those dangerous animals wasn't the murder of innocent civilians, they would be regarded as people.
- jamessavik, on 07/26/2008, -5/+9To bad they didn't shoot you so you would have a real adventure to discuss.
- bernk1, on 07/26/2008, -0/+13Come off it. As a journalist, you surely know that there is a logical reason for tight security at the Erez crossing.
- yonoz, on 07/26/2008, -1/+13First, it's Erez - not Eretz. 9 hours, you'd think you'd remember how it's called.
Second, the article specifically says there was an electronics malfunction.
Third, show me two countries at war that allow people through their borders. - Stevanoski, on 07/26/2008, -3/+4Typical Arab. The world must revolve around them and all must accede to their many loud, boastful, demands.
- bernk1, on 07/27/2008, -1/+5Stuff like "Typical ___[fill in the blank with the group of your choice]___ " tends to come across as a bit bigoted and turns people off to what you have to say. You should be more careful what you say.
- Stevanoski, on 07/27/2008, -1/+3Correct, I should have included the descriptive MSM reporter Arab.

- bernk1, on 07/27/2008, -0/+7The "high-tech cattle pen" with the "automated doors and gates [that] open and close before you" was built for one reason, and that was to isolate people who are willing to blow themselves up in order to kill Israelis. It seems to have worked pretty well.
Well, at least you recognize that there are "medical-need cases cleared for treatment in Israeli hospitals."- spongya77, on 07/27/2008, -3/+1Yeah, yeah. Blame the victim. If you are subjected for more than 40 years of brutal occupation, you would not have much love yourself. Not that terrorism is the right answer, but let's stop for a minute, and take a look at the situation. This sort of treatment only makes the violence spiral even more out of control.
