Muslim Women in France Regain Virginity in Clinics

today.reuters.com — Sitting in a cafe near the Champs Elysees, the 26-year-old French-born woman of Algerian descent looks like any other Parisian. But two months ago, she did something none of her friends have done. She had her hymen re-sewn, technically making her a virgin again.

    As mentioned in the article, the procedure is traditional, not religious (the two women mentioned in the article aren't even practicing religion!). How is the procedure even related to the issue of church and state?

The fact that these women are going into arranged marriages with men who "won't accept a non-virgin" is a pretty clear indication that in Muslim culture, women do not have the equality guaranteed to them by law.

      actually, even if there is a hymen, there's no guarantee there will be bleeding. i spent pretty much all of my teenage years scared to death i'd get blood all over everything when i lost my virginity, but after i actually did i barely bled at all (certainly not enough to stain any sheets or leave any "evidence")

You do, however, end up with a nice bit of blood afterwards, and a sort of guilty feeling from knowing that she'll probably be feeling sore for the next couple days.

      @Locasperl: If only that bit about love were true; my experience has actually been the opposite. The last one I was with suddenly decided, after six months, that she never loved me to begin with. For my part, I'm trying to escape Virginia... I'd much rather have a woman who knows just what the hell she expects out of the relationship, and out of sex for that matter.

She could just as easily break it with rigorous exercise. So this whole procedure is really purely cosmetic and based and some very ignorant and misogynistic views of sex.

    What makes me most sad about Arabic and Persian cultures is that most of the time the women don't even realize how suppressed they are.

In fact, the bloodied sheets from the wedding night were retained as "tokens of virginity" in case the husband tried to later divorce his wife for being unchaste. Most churches still teach that premarital sex is a sin, and thus both parties should arrive at their marriage-bed as virgins. The difference, I suppose, is that with a less-judgmental society, past indiscretions are usually forgiven, and very few Christian brides are put away or stoned if their hymen is not intact, so the impetus to hide the evidence is lessened.

    I was fortunate in marrying a virgin (and being one myself at the time), but I wonder if I'd be man enough to REALLY not care if my wife had been with another man before me. I think it may be a bigger deal (particularly in the early years of marriage) than most of us want to admit even in our culture. While I don't approve of the dishonesty inherent in covering up past sins and presumably lying to ones spouse, it may actually be better than the alternative in a culture where virginity is the only acceptable condition for a prospective mate.

      Well - thats my perspective. If you want to read news about how a girl got her vagina sewed up - fine - I don't really care what she does.

      and BTW - Like I said - the perspective is wrong - shes just lieing to herself....shes NOT a virgin whether its sewed up or not...This has got to be one of the dumbest stories I have ever read here on Digg....

Some women are born without them, some tear them as young children (young children have very little estrogen, so the hymen becomes extremely thin, like tissue paper) just by playing around (riding bicycles, doing gymnastics, sports, etc), some tear them from tampons/masturbation. Some women have sex and it doesn't break (just stretches).

    And sewing it shut does NOT revirginize!

    Good point. While Muslims are guilty of placing value on the "quality of women", our society is incredibly guilty of basing a woman's worth on her looks. Everyone has different ideas of what is "beautiful" so why does society insist on making women feel they need to fall into the 34-24-34 category?
