Muslim Women in France Regain Virginity in Clinics
today.reuters.com — Sitting in a cafe near the Champs Elysees, the 26-year-old French-born woman of Algerian descent looks like any other Parisian. But two months ago, she did something none of her friends have done. She had her hymen re-sewn, technically making her a virgin again.

Ummm...it's the woman's CHOICE (aka LIBERTY) to have the operation done. Not doing it as a doctor is actually an attack on the woman's liberty, no?
"He also argued that any doctor who performed these operations at state hospitals violated France's legal separation of church and state."
As mentioned in the article, the procedure is traditional, not religious (the two women mentioned in the article aren't even practicing religion!). How is the procedure even related to the issue of church and state?- InfidelAl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25Good point. Also,
"Circumcision of males is a religious commandment in Judaism and Islam,[3][4] and is customary in some Coptic, Oriental Orthodox Christian and other Christian churches in Africa."
I'm guessing they perform circumcisions in France(?). But that's not a violation of church/state separation? - KuntaKinte, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29what about tampon use? can't that tear the hymen as well? what a stupid premise to go by
- megagoogle, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3I guess this would be a hot story for...muslim men in France?
Other than that, this procedure has been around for a long time.
No Digg. - TiKoZ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Some teen agers here in egypt do it (although it's illegal) in underground clinics, so they can marry (yea you guessed it right, virginity DOES matter here).
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+83Virginity is in the mind more than anything else. A hymen can be broken accidentally and you can be completely unaware of it. Sewing it up doesn't make you a virgin.
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Its good to know its all about women's choice when they want to get a stupid operation like this, but it's all about the doctors choice when that same woman needs birth control or the morning after pill.
- SammyJr, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5@InfidelAl
They don't do them in state hospitals. You'd have to call a professional baby cutter to get it done. - mistermanoli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+61wouldnt she technically still NOT be a virgin?
- saintdesy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13If you don't tell anyone I won't.
- DiggFight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32"She had her hymen re-sewn, technically making her a virgin again."
No, technically she is not a virgin, but had her hymen re-sewn. - dogstar0125, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Also FTA: "I don't want to have this surgery, but I don't have any choice." It's the need for the surgery that is an attack on the woman's liberty, not the surgery itself. The fact that these women are going into arranged marriages with men who "won't accept a non-virgin" is a pretty clear indication that in Muslim culture, women do not have the equality guaranteed to them by law.

everyone i know is pretty much like this with the white lies and such...

If you are doing it to lie to your fiancee because you think he wouldn't accept you, then you are in for one troubled rocky relationship. Relationships should never be built on lies. I mean, what if the husband found out in the future. I think he would be more mad that the girl had intentionally deceived him than that she had sex before marriage. - macfanboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1TTIWWP

For example, if a child is susceptible to urinary tract infections, your pediatrician may recommend it because it in order to reduce the risk of infections. Urinary tract infections can be serious, in some cases leading to kidney infection and failure.
- vidar808, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The virgin slut?
I wonder how many times this operation can be done on someone? - kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2circumcision is just good for sanitary use. Does who are uncircumcised tend to have a harder time cleaning their penis. Some forget, and fungus grows in the foreskin..

Agreed, technically without the use of time travel it's impossible to regain virginity. Woman's choice but kind of sad. - meuge, on 10/12/2007, -19/+30Except that if she marries and her husband sees she doesn't bleed on their wedding night, according to the Koran it's his duty to kill her right there, or drag her out to be stoned by her family.

You can't seriously believe that is how it works in a large part of the world. It's true he can nullify the marriage, but he can't kill her. - bumfish, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4"peepee in her hooha" Actually made me cry with laughter

- akzidenzgrotesk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2exactly.
by this logic, most female bikers or horseback riders are not virgins... they may have never had a penis in them, but most likely their hymen have been broken.
but hey, if that's the kind of life these women want to live (marrying a guy who cares so much that you're a virgin you have to pay 2500 euro to get your hymen sewn back together just so he can break it again), then that's their choice i guess. personally, you couldn't pay me to have my hymen sewn back in. - akzidenzgrotesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ meuge
actually, even if there is a hymen, there's no guarantee there will be bleeding. i spent pretty much all of my teenage years scared to death i'd get blood all over everything when i lost my virginity, but after i actually did i barely bled at all (certainly not enough to stain any sheets or leave any "evidence") - Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7

"We will not take part in a market that places value on the quality of a woman -- if she's good or not. It is an attack on women's liberty."
Granted, it's not exactly his branch, but what would they have to say about breast augmentation, liposuction, or any other elective cosmetic surgery? These are all done to increase the social value of women, just in a different society. - smart1979, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I think it shouldn't be done to be honest - what if a woman who is very sexually active has this proceedure done and misleads a man ito think she is a virgin? Not cool.
- Kmack928, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16well, in all fairness, men can do that without any surgery whatsoever...
- OralCavity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7what is not cool is the retarded fetishism of virginity and the harsh consequences for women who are "experienced", while men can freely do whatever they want with no consequences. there are a lot of marriages that happen for reasons other than some romanticized version of "love" and if women can get around this double standard through a simple operation, then more power to them.
- fcekuahd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@oralcavity, I agree and I think this insistence on the woman being a virgin is strictly for the purpose of men maintaining power and control over women. Unfortunately, I think that by using this option to marry conservative Muslim men, women are perpetuating their oppression. In France as in all western countries, women have the right to choose who they marry.
- omghi2u2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Do it like the bible belt, do it in the butt! Then you are a REAL virgin, not those fake 'technical' ones.

- aMiTnaRain, on 10/12/2007, -13/+41. cool. now women can give birth and be a virgin afterwards.
2. divorce and re-marriages r no longer a problem. any girl can be a virgin 'again'
2.1. have to train the surgeons to restore the size of the h0l3s to their 'untampered' sizes- OralCavity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i don't know what your point is, but you are obviously not aware of what cultural factors would make a women would have this operation. i doubt that anyone would have a frivolous operation on their genitalia just for kicks. ...especially after giving birth.
- Locasperl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0I seriously think she just had a bad experience as a virgin and wanted to start on a fresh slate lol. Or she was a long time prostitute, and wanted to stop and choose the right path so she coulda marry a man and keep her past a secrete. all in all, some women in america could actually benefit from this surgery. haha
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2This is almost as crazy as those mutilating sex change operations perverts and insane people get.
- ariez84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I never f'ed a virgin, but do you ACTUALLY feel your penis tearing through a hymen when having sex with a virgin? Thats the only reason why anyone would get this done, because in the eyes of God, you arent a virgin anymore once the "act of sex" is performed. And even society knows that a having a hymen attached doesnt make you virgin, and vice versa.
Its doesnt "technically" make you a virgin again....on the contrary.- Locasperl, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2And yes you can actually feel it when it tears. To be honost it is not the most pleasant experience for either party. Cause if you have sex wityh a virgin, then there is a good chance she will fall in love you with ( just from my experience).
- ariez84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Is there a picture of an intact hymen on the internet? I mean I know this sound stupid, but if there is a video of a penis ejaculating inside a vagina, im sure its not impossible to have a picture of a hymen.
- Niten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It might depend on the specific woman's... anatomy, but for my part, I've "been with" two virgins, and I didn't really feel it that much – though this might have had something to do with the fact that I was wearing a condom both times. You do, however, end up with a nice bit of blood afterwards, and a sort of guilty feeling from knowing that she'll probably be feeling sore for the next couple days.
@Locasperl: If only that bit about love were true; my experience has actually been the opposite. The last one I was with suddenly decided, after six months, that she never loved me to begin with. For my part, I'm trying to escape Virginia... I'd much rather have a woman who knows just what the hell she expects out of the relationship, and out of sex for that matter. - DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ariez84:
You can find anything you want on the internet, especially where sex is concerned. However, there isn't really a "standard" looking one. There are some basic shapes, but they're pretty unique to the individual. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"but if there is a video of a penis ejaculating inside a vagina"
There is? How on earth do you film such a thing? o_O - colklink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@tizz66
a really small camera or a really big vagina...
- JJsays, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1YES!
- 44Bigs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This happens a lot in muslim communities in the Netherlands too. It's even covered by some health insurances, which is ridiculous in my opinion! Also a great base for your marriage, such a lie. (many muslim men only want to marry virgins)
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not sure how having your hymen re-sewn makes you a virgin. All it makes you is an individual with mutilated genitalia. At least it would stop your father from beating you to death in a religious fervor.
- robszol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Apparently guys need to be virgins before they're married too...what about them? They get run off scot-free if they had sex before marriage? Seems a little unfair to me so maybe the metric is wrong if it cannot be applied for both genders. But I should know better than to question the religion so digg me down!
- ariez84, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Yes it is unfair. Its also unfair that women have to bare the pain of child. Its also unfair that they get monthly periods. Its biology, and I hate how these "feminist" dont see that there is a difference between a man and a woman. We ARE NOT, AND NEVER WILL BE equal.
- OralCavity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ariez84
you are an idiot. the cultural reasons to have this operation have nothing to do with biology or physiology don't even try to equate them.
- ariez84, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"I don't want to disappoint my fiancé," she said, adjusting her glasses and brushing her highlighted brown hair from her face. "I wouldn't have had the surgery if I hadn't met him."

Maybe not lying to him is the better choice.- OralCavity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe him not divorcing her and alienating her from her family and friends just because of her not being a virgin would be the better choice that he should make. ...but, no. you are a moron, so it's easier for you to blame the victim.

- funkmachine, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Well in Islam, women are property. So is anyone actually surprised by this?
- qwerty1024, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Couldnt she just have told the guy that she was a virgin? At least that lie is free..
- ssilver07, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Ok, so let me get this straight, if sewing the hyman back is going to make the woman feel more of a virgin, then fine... but they're still not a virgin! this is totally absurd... I understand the cultural / religious significance, but once its gone its gone. Is their father going to check!?
- Dipster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This isn't anything new. Japanese women used to get this done too, since premarital sex was a lot more taboo at the time than it is now.
- aMiTnaRain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0and oral sex was not invented until recently
- atheistamok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What self-respecting woman would marry a man who cares whether or not she's a virgin? - macoafi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Uh, the view isn't a "good in bed" thing. It's a purity thing. She's "unclean." In religious circles, she's no better than a whore.

- quedigg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2***** you very much !
- Homet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This has everything to do with suppression of women. As been noted above, a woman does not have to have sex in order to break her hymen. She could just as easily break it with rigorous exercise. So this whole procedure is really purely cosmetic and based and some very ignorant and misogynistic views of sex.
What makes me most sad about Arabic and Persian cultures is that most of the time the women don't even realize how suppressed they are. - JavaApe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Just playing Devil's advocate, but Christianity has also historically placed considerable importance on a brides virginity. In fact, the bloodied sheets from the wedding night were retained as "tokens of virginity" in case the husband tried to later divorce his wife for being unchaste. Most churches still teach that premarital sex is a sin, and thus both parties should arrive at their marriage-bed as virgins. The difference, I suppose, is that with a less-judgmental society, past indiscretions are usually forgiven, and very few Christian brides are put away or stoned if their hymen is not intact, so the impetus to hide the evidence is lessened.
I was fortunate in marrying a virgin (and being one myself at the time), but I wonder if I'd be man enough to REALLY not care if my wife had been with another man before me. I think it may be a bigger deal (particularly in the early years of marriage) than most of us want to admit even in our culture. While I don't approve of the dishonesty inherent in covering up past sins and presumably lying to ones spouse, it may actually be better than the alternative in a culture where virginity is the only acceptable condition for a prospective mate.- rlh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"very few Christian brides are put away or stoned if their hymen is not intact"
are any ? - kaiser44, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@javape, quit playing the devils advocate, The story is about Muslim women having their hymens sewn up so they can be acceptable to a third world mentality that for the most part is dominated buy men who would keep women as cattle if they could.
The sad part is that it is happening in France and I suppose that it goes to show you you can take The Muslim out of the 3rd world, but you can't take the 3rd world out of some Muslims.

How can people living in a modern culture still be uneducated about sex EVEN if their personal culture constantly preaches abstinence and sexual sin?
Rediculous. You have sex once, you're not a virgin anymore. You can't have 2 first times period. i can understand doing it for a new marriage, for the guy and the marriage, etc.
but doing it for your religion?!
the physical aspects of a lost virginity have nothing to do with religion (please save all jokes, it's hard for me to do as well....).
it's all in your head and your heart with religion.
being 'pure' has nothing to do with whether or not your hymen is intact.
ugh *flails arms*.- greenjohnsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You obviously are not a Muslim.
- macoafi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why not claim they never had one? Some women are born without them, some tear them as young children (young children have very little estrogen, so the hymen becomes extremely thin, like tissue paper) just by playing around (riding bicycles, doing gymnastics, sports, etc), some tear them from tampons/masturbation. Some women have sex and it doesn't break (just stretches).
And sewing it shut does NOT revirginize! - shescrafty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Granted, it's not exactly his branch, but what would they have to say about breast augmentation, liposuction, or any other elective cosmetic surgery? These are all done to increase the social value of women, just in a different society."
Good point. While Muslims are guilty of placing value on the "quality of women", our society is incredibly guilty of basing a woman's worth on her looks. Everyone has different ideas of what is "beautiful" so why does society insist on making women feel they need to fall into the 34-24-34 category? -
