- bwinebarger, on 07/19/2009, -1/+23You would think that something dating back that far would be worth more. Oh well. Still a lot of money.
- mikeinto, on 07/19/2009, -1/+23I would return everything to the Mayans because their artifacts are oozing with curses and that impending 2012 thingy.
- javy925, on 07/19/2009, -1/+15one man's trash is another man's treasure
- vsujohn2, on 07/20/2009, -0/+13No longer yours, its mayans.
- MrZop, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9if you throw something out, it becomes public domain, if you find it, you can keep it. it's your fault for throwing these types of things out, not his for finding them.
- Dweller99, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9From the sound of it, I do not think he did anything wrong. He was hired to clear out some trash. The person(s) making the decision of what goes out as trash is at fault here for not opening that barrel up and realizing what it contains.
- askantik, on 07/20/2009, -1/+4I don't really understand why these artifacts are worth anything if we don't know the sites they came from. The first thing you learn in Archaeology 101 is that the context prehistorical artifacts are found in is just as important, if not more so, than the artifacts themselves.
People who would pay tens of thousands of dollars for this stuff have no interest in science or history, merely buying ***** because they have more money than brains.
On a side note, "Hill's estate paid DiMola about $4,500 in October 2004 to clean out the artist's Prince St. apartment, studio and basement storage." Christ, that's a ton of money to move out some *****. - redux2redux, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Hmm, mysterious barrel in NYC, could just as easily been Hoffa in there...
- blankmedia, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2That's like...82 pairs of jeans!
- DAILYCROW, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2Prices are determined through competitive bidding.
Actual appraisals are really no more than market manipulation. - neoq36, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1$16,500 was reported but how much did they really find?
- xero69, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1"The couple's property fell to friends, who formed a nonprofit foundation to take the valuables from the studio."
So the non-profit foundation hires someone to remove what they believe to be trash, and this guy cashes in on their mistake. Sure it's legal, but I don't think it's very kind to take money away from any non-profit no matter how you manage to do it. - thoughtsonthis, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1How lucky can you get!
- ASSASSYN360, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Seriously, how does something that old have a price tag. Is there an old ***** (antique) price list somewhere on the vast internetS.
- catvllvs, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1So... every museum in the world should return everything not local? And how local? Country, state, suburb?
- Veegie, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Professional mover
- crazy0, on 07/20/2009, -0/+0no thats just western hype.....really
- snafflepaffle, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1This kind of ***** is easy to find if you know where to look for it in Central America. Farmers dig it up from their fields and sell it because it's a simple way to make a little money. It's pretty easy to tell the fakes from the real ones if you know what to look for. Of course it's pretty much lost all it's value by being removed from it's surroundings.
- crazy0, on 07/20/2009, -0/+0the western world needs to quit fetishizing material cultural items that clearly dont belong to them....
- flavanoid, on 07/20/2009, -3/+2There something shady about this story. There's got to be a reason for keeping a barrel of unknown contents for five years. I suspect a statue of limitations on claiming the 'lost' merchandise is involved somehow. Either way, it's not a life changing amount of money. He should have given it back to the non-profit that was the intended recipient in the first place and hoped for a reward at best. If the movies have taught me anything , he'll pay for that...the artifacts always make you pay...
- antoniuk, on 07/20/2009, -3/+2Most pre Columbian digs are not well documented. Prior to the 1970s nearly all were in disarray and pillaged. This does not lessen the cultural significance of such finds.
He should return them to the people of Mexico as they rightfully belong to them and not to a private collector that I can almost guarantee bought them directly or indirectly from a stolen and or ransacked site. - catvllvs, on 07/20/2009, -2/+1Doesn't work in Australian law, and I suspect many other countries.
In this case it was different: "If he is given a contract by the owner of property to remove and dispose of certain things, if the owner makes the mistake, that's the way it is," Koegel said.
Does depend on the contract. There was a case a few years back in Australia where a cleaning woman was charged with theft after taking something from a trash can. The person who threw it away intended it to be disposed of, not retrieved.
If you throw things out by mistake you can also claim them back.
Digg law, like bar room law, ain't going to hold up in court. - crazy0, on 07/20/2009, -1/+0dead guy harbors archeological contents that were procured under sketchy circumstances
- clayvis, on 07/20/2009, -1/+0What's yours in Mayan....
- wonderchemist, on 07/20/2009, -4/+3The only reason people leave artifacts behind is because they are cursed. And who leaves a barrel unopened for five years?
- punkcat, on 07/20/2009, -5/+2i don't buy it. the guy stole the stuff.
no one decides to keep trash for years never looking at it. - aparatoc, on 07/20/2009, -5/+1finding it doesn't necessarally mean you own it..Mexican goverment can easly take it as a national treasure.. and maybe even fine them..
- leetninja, on 07/20/2009, -8/+2Should be: Mover steals barrel from dead guy by "mistake" and profits ...
- Truth3, on 07/20/2009, -10/+2Heh, I really don't like what this guy did. He had no clue what was inside of the barrel yet he kept it. So basically anything you throw away, this guy could keep? What if there where financial documents or very personal belongings there? This creep gets to keep it at his will?

What is Digg?
