Most Americans say China wrong choice for Games
reuters.com — 70% of U.S. voters think it was wrong to let China host the Olympics, but equal numbers say a Beijing Games boycott would fail to change China's human rights policies, a Zogby poll showed on Tuesday. The survey of...

- vault, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Yeah I'm sure the Olympics are going to spark WWIII.
- stevenimmons, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1Let’s not end up back in boycotts (such as Moscow in 1980 and LA in 1984). Recall that it was Jimmy Carter who issued the ultimatum to Russia following the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan. How times change - Russia are hardly going to huff because the UK, US, Canada (et al) are embroiled in conflict today across the same region. China is undergoing enormous change and must be given a chance (albeit kept in check with adequate pressure and diplomacy). I really hope the Games are not hijacked simply for publicity. For many athletes this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity and boycotts would be deeply injurious to the true Olympic spirit.
- 3tcp, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3The true Olympic spirit? The spirit of the 2008 Olympics will be China telling everyone how great they are while arresting any poor people that happen to wander back into Beijing while all the foreigners are still there. If China doesn't try to turn the games into a monument to their imperial glory I'll be surprised.
- stevenimmons, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1The pious need to examine their own foreign and domestic policies to ensure the stones of their scorn are not crashing through glass walls.
- 3tcp, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2There is no evil in the democratic west that even comes close to denying basic freedoms to over a billion people. Chinese national pride does not require a totalitarian power to enforce or perpetuate it. Are you more devoted to the government that keeps the nation under its thumb than to the people themselves?

- suzywang3000, on 04/09/2008, -6/+1apparantly 70% of Americans are idiots... presumably the same 70% who think Bush is doing a bad job.
- whoreable, on 04/09/2008, -3/+3Bush is doing a bad job and learn to spell apparently. You truly are a bush supporter with your mangling of words.

Notice how every moronic comment is pretty much right out of Cheney's *****?

- whoreable, on 04/09/2008, -3/+1This is my standard response to every China article.
"The war between China and the US will break out when the US decides after borrowing a ***** ton of money from China, that we should just call it even after the insane amount of technology they have stolen from us."
Enjoy- 3tcp, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1China owns that debt in the form of US treasury bonds. Bonds are transferable. In order to be sure that we won't have to pay that debt and that China doesn't get any money for it, we would need to default on all of the debt. Otherwise China would just trade them for euros or something.
- jedmed, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Actually, it's the perfect place for the Olympics.
With tens of thousands of citizens visiting from freedom loving democracies in town, what is China going to do when Chinese or Tibetan citizens start protesting in mass just outside the Olympic Games?
Freak out, that's what.- Jambi, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1They'll use security to move the foreigners out of the area (perhaps using a terrorist threat as an excuse) then arrest and imprison or kill any protesters.
- meshman, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Toronto should have had those games. They were in the lead to win it until China took a ***** fit, declaring they'd refuse to participate in any future games if they didn't get it because they've never had it (or has been in like, forever) so the IOC wussed out and gave it to them.
Similar result to Sony/Blu-ray winning the HD format war. Just because you win doesn't mean you deserve it. - buhbyebot, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1***** 中国
