- GQCarrick, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Glad to see they are going to do something about this case, I remember this being on Digg a LONG time ago.
- scootinger, on 05/15/2008, -3/+1"She was charged with conspiracy and fraudulently gaining access to someone else's computer."
what did she do to be charged with "fraudulently gaining access to someone else's computer"?- colincornaby, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2"The indictment says MySpace members agree to abide by terms of service that include, among other things, not promoting information they know to be false or misleading; soliciting personal information from anyone under age 18 and not using information gathered from the Web site to "harass, abuse or harm other people.""
She fraudulently gained access to MySpace's servers- DaDrake, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1It is no doubt a stretch for the DA to make this case... and if convicted, they already have grounds for appeals. The charge is she created an account under a false name, and she used someone else's picture without permission. When you think about the internet... EVERYONE does this to secure their privacy. The fact is... the charges have NOTHING to do with harassment or bullying.
So it is obvious .... the DA will loose but he is making the case to set an example. This isn't something he can win.

- jiqiren, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1California courts once again reach for justice!
- DaDrake, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Honestly, I not sure how much justice is appropriate and if the prosecution can even win based on laws. It seems like the only leg the prosecution has is some type of non-felony fraud... to me, this is an obvious examples of laws not being up-to-date with technology and the prosecution stretching the intent of other laws. Secondly, the mother does deserve some punishment but you can't charge her with manslaughter. Obviously, this girl had a lot of problems and wrote her own destiny.
I think 1000 hours of community service would be fair. - Deanwrd, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0Seeing a story like this makes me believe that there is hope for our justice system and our society and maybe even the Internet. As one of the very early chatters and IMers, 1996, when there was more of an open forum and more programs were run then in it's infancy. I have seen nothing less then the degradation of words flung around like yes, poop, even. All of us should be accountable to respectable when communicating to anyone especially when the World Wide Web is the medium. Regardless of age, gender, race, whatever. There are many who use this tool of communication to berate and threaten others on here with no regard for decency, consequence, nor accountability. And even though I don't believe in using anyone or a case as being made to/and/or used as an example, I do hope that all who use the Internet as a tool of communication find this eye opening and maybe a precedent when dealing with people one-on-one or in groups, on-line. I can't say enough about the impact; not just in Missouri, not just in the U.S., but hopefully around the globe that this will have.
- LuCiFer6, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1I cried when I heard about this story on 20/20 last year and was outraged that these SICK ASS Parents was able to get away with helping to kill someone's baby, and now like father I cried tears of joy to hearing that at least some justice will be paid.
On a side note I don't know how those parents was able to keep themselves after finding out that their SICK ASS Neighbors had something to do with their baby's death. What was really ***** sick is that they knew that they help killed this girl and they went the parents house to counsel the parents knowing what they did.
FOR ME: The police would have to put me jailed because I would have to kill someone.
