"More than 4,000 people have been killed this year in fighting between the cartels and security forces. The country is now more violent than Iraq, mass graves are found near the US border on a weekly basis and the death squads have recently started to adopt a gruesome new method for killing their victims - beheading."
It may be just me, but I'm seeing just a little cause for concern...........Of course everyone could legalize it, whichever substance, and take the wind right out of these guys sails, but hey what's a little beheading here and there??? - MforMike, on 11/09/2008, -2/+21he will be out in a few days
- seltaeb4, on 11/09/2008, -0/+18Maybe he was so mean because everyone always giggled at his nickname.
- Thinkerofthings, on 11/09/2008, -1/+18I'm not a fan of Bush... but I think these drug cartels should be handled like the terrorists they are and be hunted and killed. What is going on down there is as destabilizing as any of the other hot spots around the world, only a lot closer to home.
- rkky, on 11/09/2008, -0/+16Its about time i see something about this in the news. I lived at the Tamaulipas/Texas border for 18 years and you never see this stuff in the media or national news. Its also not comforting that this is from a newspaper in the UK... We need to stop worrying so much about other countries when we have this problem so close to ours. Seriously, beheadings and kidnappings have become the norm in Mexico, like its whats supposed to happen, AND its become the career of choice for thousands of unemployed citizens because there simply is no way you can provide enough money and security for a family. It really sucks :-(
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -0/+13"Drug cartel death squad"... well, it does has a certain ring to it.
- palehorse864, on 11/09/2008, -0/+13Because in the movie The Man With the Golden Gun, that was one of his distinguishing features. My grammar might be off though.
- Saladas, on 11/09/2008, -1/+13It's Arriba! Arriba! FAIL
- coreyb, on 11/09/2008, -0/+10Why would you ask about having three nipples?
- MadOgre, on 11/09/2008, -0/+10For Digger Knowledge. The gun in question here is a Colt 1911 chambered in .38 Super. Colt sold a great many .38 Supers in Mexico as it was more popular down there than .45ACP.
Decorated grips are also hugely popular down there as well.
However the gold plated barrel is rather unique. Due to wear, the gold plating would not last long if this gun was fired. You can see no wear on the barrel at all, indicating this gun was not fired... as wear marks show up in short order even with just a single shot.
So this gun was carried more as a symbol and a threat than for actual use. - Archcoder, on 11/09/2008, -0/+9Grats Mexico, keep those drugs out of America.
- restlessdesign, on 11/09/2008, -0/+7Did they get Nick Nack too? (Hint: He's hiding in the boat)
- TidusX, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7It reminds me of the Dark Knight where escalation comes to play. President Calderon is really trying to fix his country and stamping out corruption and removing the drug lords from power.
The problem is that because that power is being removed the drug cartels are pushing back as hard as they can not to lose it. Some other examples of that are when the mafia pushed back when they were removing them from NY.
It is a good sign because it means things are changing and the corrupt do not want that change. Its sad to see Mexico have so much violence but the citizens must come together and endure until the work is finish if not it will return to how it was. - CaptOblivious, on 11/10/2008, -1/+7Quote krahzee, "Why is the first answer always legalization?"
Because some people have studied history and the lessons learned from the mistake that was the 18th amendment, it was Prohibition. It created a huge number of criminal enterprises dedicated to selling the public what it wanted regardless of the governments having made a law against it.
Does this sound at all familiar? It should as it's exactly the same problem, you can make alcohol or any other drug illegal but you cannot stop the population from wanting it. This creates a black market and gives the very people that shouldn't have money and power exactly that.
When prohibition ended those drug lords were in the position to use their wealth to do many things unrelated to criminal enterprise and many of them did.
Look up the history of the Kennedy family. - maz2331, on 11/10/2008, -0/+6Mexico DOES have big oil reserves.
- EpicSelekta, on 11/09/2008, -1/+7I'm not the only one who was hoping this article was about El Mariachi, right?
- enkideridu, on 05/15/2009, -1/+7article too long
make into movie and repost - palehorse864, on 11/10/2008, -0/+5I think tetillas mean men's nipples specifically. Don't consult me though I brough in an expert on such situations.
Nelson Munts: Hah ha! - krahzee, on 11/10/2008, -4/+9Why is the first answer always legalization?
Suppose you do. Are these guys going to suddenly put down their weapons and get desk jobs? No.
Look, I'm all for legalizing weed.
That is not going to solve this issue, just merely drive these guys to a new source of revenue. Kidnapping, for example, smuggling people into the US, etc...
To think this is that cut and dry would be foolish. - Tehrab, on 11/10/2008, -1/+6To think legalization wouldn't dramatically reduce the drug cartels power and influence is also foolish. To also think that kidnapping and human smuggling would be as profitable as drugs is beyond the pale of intellect.
Legalization would reduce the problem to an issue small enough to be dealt with effectively, that is a matter of fact. - josepablos, on 11/09/2008, -2/+7Si Usted Tiene Algun Problema .... Platique Con Mi Pistola.!
- kike_santos, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4Awesome song by Zurdok!
:D - palehorse864, on 11/09/2008, -5/+9Se tiene tres tetillas?
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -1/+5i love 007 goldeneye
- replaysMike, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4and out of Mexico...
- maz2331, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4If these cartels gain much more strength, they could very well topple the Mexican government and basically take over the country.
- diggduggjoe, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4The big difference is the common man supports the drug trade. They are not turning in their suppliers. Think about it. The money comes from voluntary purchases from average people.
Other types of crime are not so easy and come with greater risks. Kidnapping, fraud and good old stealing will likely have you at the wrong end of a gun more often. The source of the money in such crimes are known as victims and they will work with police or shoot back, if forced to.
Mexico and the US have enough prison space for real criminals. Let's get the non-violent drug offenders out prison and fill those cells with all the scum. - MadOgre, on 11/09/2008, -1/+5What does Bush have to do with it?
- T8erT0T, on 11/09/2008, -0/+4I think he means the '64 game.
- slopoke, on 11/09/2008, -0/+3For hours I scoured the article, and not one single place told me the name of the movie...
- Dohko_Xar, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3Well, I'm from Mexico so I can tell you that nobody says tetillas for female nipples, everyone calls them pezones, for males and females. But again, you call things way different all over Mexico and not just Mexico, all Spanish speaking countries call things different ways.
- Culero, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3why not let the big cartel kill off the rest of the little ones, and then go after the big cartel once they're the only ones left....*calls Denzel Washington*
- omarst, on 11/09/2008, -0/+3i love ppl who writte just because they have a keyboard but not a mind, read before making stupid comentaries
troops meaning army, army doesnt have the right to get into houses EVER, thats the federal force for
there are no cases of civils taken down during this operations, and actually no sigle shot was made during the capture of "the hummer"
in the last 2 months 4 heads of cartels were taken down, one from zetas and tree from cartel of the leyva brothers, 3 weeks ago 5 corrupt officers were put in jail, 2 more resigned their post
thats sound to me like an effort - Viciouse0216, on 11/09/2008, -4/+7"President Felipe Calderon has deployed thousands of troops and police to the country's bloody drug zones since he was elected in 2006"
*****, the "troops" look the other way when it comes to getting
the Zetas, they give them a heads up so they can leave the town. only
worse than that is that the "troops" go into innocent people's houses tear ***** up
and take whatever little money the people have. - drex8, on 11/09/2008, -1/+4So which word is the word for nipples? I'm guessing tetillas?
Sounds awfully close to tortillas.
anyhow...
Arriba! Arriba! Tetillas! Tetillas! - Clbull, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3in the N64 game, the Golden Gun was the ultimate weapon.
Although... I perfer the Gold PP7 - inactive, on 11/09/2008, -1/+4I lol'd.
- txpunk, on 11/09/2008, -0/+3Damn, I live about 20min away from Reynosa on the US side. That place is going to have a big war soon.
- docturpeppur, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3Jaime "The Hummer" Gonzalez is only the jefe for the Reynosa area. There are many more cartel members like him, and even more mafiosos above them.
The supposedly biggest arms cache was found months ago in separate raids.
The increased violence has only started recently and certain events have lead up to it.
1. The building of the border wall and amped up security on the Mexican border.
2. Martial law along most of the mexican border cities along the mexico-texas border.
3. "project reckoning", a joint effort between federal and local law enforcement trying to put a dent in the Gulf Cartel's drug trade.
This is a different place from the rest of the United States and the rest of Mexico. The federal governments of either countries do not know how to fix things here. - inactive, on 11/09/2008, -0/+2i know but i saw a golden gun and thought of that. i'll get dugg down but w/e
- fakeguy, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2Its happening everywhere and getting worse. But why did the article have to come from the U.K. and not here?
http://www.elpasotimes.com/ci_10917608?source=most ... - Thinkerofthings, on 11/09/2008, -1/+3Only reason I mentioned Bush, is a lot of people equate him with misappropriated ideas on what to do and how to do it, when it comes to threats to the U.S. In this example Terrorism in all its forms. I just feel a firm hand is needed in some cases and diplomatic one in others. The trick is doing the right thing for a given situation, and hopefully being able to have the support of people that may have inflexible ideas on how to deal with them.
- Spadassin, on 11/09/2008, -0/+2"The authorities have made a series of high-profile arrests, unleashing ever more violent responses by the cartels"
Yes now ordinary citizens have to fear for there life. Every day in Tijuana there's a shooting were no less then two people die.
And then you have Two drug cartels (one of them sponsored by the gov) that are fighting the right to work in Mexico. Unfortunate the only way to stop all the deaths is that one finally wins and that the regain control of the area. - ZigVicious, on 11/09/2008, -1/+3Who on earth are Duran Durn? Are they some sort of second rate Duran Duran tribute band?
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2Yes.
