McDonald's employee charged after serving oversalted burger to Policeman
wistv.com — A 20-year-old McDonald's employee spent a night in jail and is facing criminal charges after a police officer complained that the burger she prepared with too much salt made him sick. Kendra Bull was charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and arrested at 1:30 am on Friday. After a court hearing later that morning, she was released on $1000 bond.

- sarazen, on 10/10/2007, -93/+12A few of years ago some angry teen spit on a cop's Wendy burger up here in Fairbanks. Within a couple of weeks all of the Wendy's were closed, and it was around a year before someone had the nerve to try and open one again. So not only did the dumbass lose his job, but so did all his coworkers in three different stores. I take from this, don't mess with the cops food. It just isn't worth it.

The way I see it... In this day and age, I'm far more likely to be harmed by by a cop, or by our police state, than by the threats they are supposedly protecting me from. IMO, we would be safer with a dramatically pared down police force and a much smaller prison "industry".- mcduckov, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'd modify that statement to be that we would be dramatically safer if we stopped feeding the courts/prisons so many drug users and instead focused more on violent offenders. I'm routinely shocked at how long the sentences are for drug users or dealers and how short the sentences are for people who commit outright murder.

When it got out that one of the employees was spitting in food their customer base completely dried up. Nobody would go there, I mean would you what with the snotty teens behind the counter spitting in the food? That is what killed the business, not some cop.

- shupy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22The article clearly states that it was a batch of meat. The restaurant should have dumped the whole batch. It could have been anyone that got that crap. I don't care if it's a cop or anyone else, restaurants should not serve food that is over salted, rotten, spit on or damaged in anyway.
Makes me want to stay away from McDonalds. They should have better trained staff.- iregistered4ths, on 10/10/2007, -1/+43Are you seriously saying THIS incident is the incident that makes you want to stay away from McDonalds.
Most people I know stay away from McDonalds, cause you know, its McDonalds.- FearlessFreep, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Yeah, I'm sorta wondering why the police officer assumed that eating at McDonald's wouldn't make one sick.

- Dulcinea80, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Maybe they should pay food service workers a little more. Then maybe they would actually give a ***** about the job. Knowing that you can just quit and get another minimum wage the next day doesn't make a personal feel loyal to the company. Especially considering some of McDonald's shady business practices.
- CalmLlama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I bet if the employee threw out that batch of meat for being bad then she would have lost her job
- serend, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wrong. I speak as a manager at a McDonalds, and if the food isn't right we simply don't sell it. It is figured in the budget that we should waste so much of EVERYTHING. If someone were fired for throwing something away because it isn't right they would have a nice against them. Accidents happen and crew is usually lazy and naive this happening doesn't surprise me, being arrested for this crazy..

- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No amount of training is going to get you to know what a salty burger looks like. Unless they're nibbling on each patty (liable to get them sued), an employee really has no way to know that the batch has been appropriately seasoned. BUT, food services pay is really low, I agree.

Suing a place just for making you sick? What a douchebag thing to do. - thall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25You'd be calling your lawyer, but you wouldn't be going behind the counter to make an arrest. This cop should have gone through the same process we all have to, but he felt he was above the law and abused his power to make the arrest personally.
- BoltSteve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17No, I would be calling up the restaurant and getting a refund. No reason to get a lawyer involved.

- CalmLlama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10An employee can't be held personally responsible for things that are done by their boss. She told her manager and her manager made the call, if she would have thrown out the meat anyway she would have been fired... it was the managers call and the owners responsibility.
- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Uh, no I wouldn't. I would call the restaurant and let them know that I had gotten ill after eating X or Y product so they could get that product checked. How do I know I would do this? Because I have called stores before (never a fast food place, though - I don't go to any of them ever) and told them about an issue I have with a product.
- trickonion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6One time, I ate a bag of Lays that gave me food poisoning. You know what I did?
I threw up over a 24 hour period, then I got better, and then I went on with my life.

- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Actually, that isn't a bad way to handle it. "I'm sorry, it is become apparent that serving Police Officers opens our employees to far too much harassment from stupid arrests and beating from Police Officers. We can no longer server you." Although it would make a point, criminals would be happy to rob the place, knowing that the police wouldn't come. :)
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1So someone at a restaurant decides to mess with your food, and you know it.
What would you do?- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The person "messing" with the food ALREADY told the manager. Who else needs to know?
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1So someone at a restaurant decides to mess with your food, and you know it.
- CalmLlama, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If i was that owner i would refuse to serve cops over that incident. The cops don't help businesses individually. I live in an area with very few cops, and very low funding for them. They were so corrupt and power abusing that we voted down their funding, then they raided the library funding and now we have no libraries. Cops exist to throw you in jail, the war on terror is a war against us and the cops are the government's front line soldiers in this war. Cops are worse than the criminals they arrest.
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Actually, that isn't a bad way to handle it. - ventralnet, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3Well from the sound of hte article it may not have just been salt on the burger... Really can't comment till that evidence comes in
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Or it WAS only salt on the burger and the police are jumping to conclusions yet AGAIN in trying to fight fast food TERRORISM.
- nytewalker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Except that it said the worker madea burger for herself from the same meat! Read the whole article next time.
- mikeon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I thought all mcdonalds burgers use pre made meat patties that are just frozen until needed? From the article it sounds like maybe all the patties were being made at the same time and she spilt the salt over a portion of the patties. Rather than just toss the patties out, she made a burger for herself and I'm guessing the other patties either got tossed or the employees decided to use the salty patties anyways.
- po43292, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5He could have just spit the damn thing out if he didn't want it, not keep eating.
- Scottamus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Salty fast food? What next? Dinosaurs attacking major cities? Rivers of blood? What is this world coming too.
- catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -12/+6Why is everyone saying "oversalted"? Who the hell puts salt on a burger?
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Check the official website of any fast food restaurant chain. There's salt in EVERYTHING. Even the soft drinks. On one website I saw (Wendys, I think) there's an ingredients list for TOMATOES.
- Jsan2006, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7Catalysis, That’s kind of the point. I would imagine that the burger patties need only to be heated and served. The presence of salt would suggest that an employee of the restaurant tampered with the food because of its intended recipient. No one deservers to have their food tampered with, not even a-hole cops. I doubt this would warrant an arrest though, the manager in charge should have been able to deal with the situation…
- SPLASTiK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6As someone who worked at McDonalds they cook the frozen burgers then when done lightly add a seasoning salt (I think it's just a salt/pepper mix) before placing them in a tray. The tray is then placed in some heated thing where it can sit up to 20-25 minutes where after it's supposed to be thrown away but that doesn't always happen...
I remember the salt mix falling over many a times, if it was really bad they usually would just toss the burgers it spilt on though.- fantastcandy10, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2and msg!

Can't deny because of race, religion, gender, disabilities, and a few other things. Some places in the US even have laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, I know of no laws that protect against discrimination based on employer or practice, where said discrimination takes place between a business and potential customers. You can, however, get in trouble in the US for discriminating against persons in the military. There are some cases where discrimination of those things is permitted. After all, why would a male need to see a gynecologist?

Nothing better than seeing a cop make the system work... for him.

- dude187, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24My roommate's girlfriend got robbed at gunpoint and saw a cop litterally 30 SECONDS later walking down the street. She told him the guy was right around the corner and to go catch him and the cop just shruged his sholders and said "file a police report tomorrow".
Whenever I've needed them cops have had better things to do, whenever I'm minding my own business they are always there to write some BS ticket. The police don't help us they are just a hidden form of taxation.- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Sounds suspicious.

- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Wow, that's mature. Denying a whole class of people service because there are a few jerks in the batch? That's kind of like banning all Arab-looking people because a few of them are involved in the war. Or like banning all US soldiers because a few of them behaved poorly in Iraq.
- johnbenclark, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2On the positive side, it would put social pressure on them to change the way they act. Which cops probably need as the "blue line" seems to be used for less socially productive measures.

- rockefella, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The 14th Amendment also serves as the mechanism by which the US Supreme Court has applied the Bill of Rights to State action (the Bill of Rights directly applies only to Federal action). So in a lawsuit, plaintiff sues for violation of 4th amendment rights against search and seizure VIA the 14th amendment against the state police. As for 42 U.S.C. 1983, that's the statute that permits plaintiffs to bring quasi-tort actions against government actors for violation of constitutional rights - so-called "constitutional torts".
- hiphoc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Mention title 42 section 1983 to "public servants" and they ***** bricks. That means u can bring a lawsuit on them personally along with their bosses for violating your rights. Print it up on a card, carry in your wallet and use wisely.

AP articles are written by reporters from independent news outlets, so it's probably an accepted writing style for a particular paper in Georgia.
- chicoer2001, on 10/10/2007, -6/+205The cop needs to be fired for being such an ass and wasting tax payer's money. He's a cop, so he thinks he can arrest someone because it happened to him? If anyone called 911 for a complaint that they, the cops wouldnt give a *****. Stop wasting tax money on you little vendettas.
- blorc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+53Agreed. If you were a regular customer and tried to call the police to have someone arrested for the same thing, you would get laughed at.
- aposter, on 10/10/2007, -12/+5He is a police officer. He can arrest anyone for no reason if he wishes. You can't do anything about it at the time or he has a real criminal offence, resisting arrest. If an officer places you under arrest you are required by law to comply, even if it is ***** charges. The place to fight it is at your habeus corpus hearing. If it is found that the arrest wasn't lawful then you can sue them, but if you resisted they WILL nail you on that charge.
- fafaforza, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Great system we have here. You lose a day's worth of pay and have to come up with bail money, and go through the effort to fight a ***** charge just because a cop has a bug up his ass. And it remains to be seen if she'll have a job to come back to when this is all over.
That cop should be fired and forced to work at MickyD's himself to see what life is like without his above-the-law ***** cop status.- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1But look at the number of times so called "stupid" arrests occur versus the number of valid arrests. I am not saying that we should just ignore "stupid" arrests, but perhaps understand that, for the most part, cops are doing a good job.
- Schmidtopolis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3HAHAHAHA, that's a joke, right rnwen? So cops can make a mistake by arresting someone on ***** charges, but a McD's employee has to be perfect on the job, and not accidently put too much salt on a burger? Great.
- DDoSAttack, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Actually no they cannot just arrest anyone anytime they feel like. We have a thing called "Probable Cause" and constitutional freedoms that are supposed to protect us from things like that.
Unfortunately though that is the direction we are taking because We The People are too pussified to do anything about it.- GRTWHT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Did you read what aposter wrote!?
"You can't do anything about it at the time or he has a real criminal offence, resisting arrest. If an officer places you under arrest you are required by law to comply, even if it is ***** charges."
That means that he CAN in fact arrest anyone, any time for any reason and all you can do is try to address it afterwards. That was the whole point of the post!
- GRTWHT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Did you read what aposter wrote!?
- socokoolaid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Lost work, bond money (yeah they are keeping 20% regardless of outcome), more lost work for court dates and lawyer conferences, oh yeah and pay for a lawyer, pay for investigators, lab testing, and subpoenas. Then 'Ops we were wrong, not guilty." and your done. Want to get your money back, sue them and risk more money, but you'll probably loose. - brotherfranciz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I had the tiniest bit of empathy for the cop but you put it into perspective for me... if I called 911 and told them my burger was too salty, they'd think it was a prank call.
- aaliymah112, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I think you should do that. So they could see for themselves how stupid this whole thing really is. Tampering with other people's food is wrong but can you honestly tell me that the cop isn't a GREEDY BASTARD! If you were eating a salty burger, i think by the first bite you'd realize something is wrong. But like the greedy bastard he is he continued to chow down on the burger. He's lucky it was just an over-salted burger and not a skunk's ass that was used for the meat instead.

It is one thing to use your power when they are arresting a non-working, worthless, criminal but cmon, this girl is working for a living and made a mistake. How many times have cops arrested people because they were suspicious looking?
That is tax payer money at it's best. I just paid a cops salary to bust a McDonald's worker! BTW, there is a guy 2 houses down from me that beats his wife. They have been to the house at least 5 times this year and he hasn't gotten a slap on the wrist.- Ndiggnation, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Couldn't agree more. I think them becoming cops is their own way to pay back the rest of society.
I can't think of how many times I've been pulled over (say doing 32 a 30, really) and when the cop walks up I'm thinking, "Oh great, I remember you..."

Whether she is cleared or not is unimportant right now, when the girl, who works at McDonald's, is going to have to pay for lawyers on top of her $1000 to get out of jail. This same thing could happen to any of you tomorrow.- Phillydroog, on 10/10/2007, -19/+2No it couldn't. I don't work at a food establishment, therefore I won't be getting arrested by some knucklehead cop who didn't like his heartattack between two buns.

- andshewas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33Spot on. Abuse of power is rampant. If I had gotten sick from a meal at McDonald's, the most they would have done is refund my money. I wouldn't have had the ability to have the preparer thrown in jail...especially over mere salt.

Thanks for ***** up that simple command, guys.

- GRTWHT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Glad to see one person got the real point of this story...even if everyone else thinks it's a joke.
- SasquatchBill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7When I heard this story this morning on the radio, it wasn't clear that it was 'too much salt' spilled on the burger. It was a question of whether or not the burger was covered in semen, actually.
I'll be interested to see what happens when the lab results come back. If it was just salt, will that change anything, or will the cop get away scot free?
- Phillydroog, on 10/10/2007, -19/+2No it couldn't. I don't work at a food establishment, therefore I won't be getting arrested by some knucklehead cop who didn't like his heartattack between two buns.
- Ozzsanity, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3What cops don't understand is people do far worse than put salt in their pig food. Just imagine an angry young man who serves a lot of pigs at his local Jack in the Box and then keeps a little container of feces that he adds to each burger served to a pig. Not saying that ever happened. ;-)
- Thorox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hope y....er... that person washed their hands after each fecal burger...
- driftwood07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2just curiously, did you really do this ?

- Skellbasher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+45No malicious intent by the employee at all. She made a point to tell her supervisor what had happened to the meat, who STILL decided to serve it KNOWING it wasn't quite right.
Complete abuse of authority by the officer. On top of that, he sent the damn burger to the CRIME LAB ??? Hope the taxpayers of of Union City are aware they're ponying up for that expense.
I'm not a fan of frivolous lawsuits in general, but if this were my daughter, I think she'd have a free college education coming to her, paid for by this hardass officer.- thall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8...re-imbursed by the police department from tax dollars. Not saying she doesn't deserve the compensation, but the police are good at passing the buck (yuk yuk)
- LoadStar, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5Her story doesn't stand up, nor did her supervisor verify the story she gave. She claims that she was mixing burger meat when salt fell into the bowl. Problem: McD's doesn't use raw hamburger meat, nor do they make burgers in store. They use frozen hamburger patties (10:1 and 4:1 patties for most stores, and some now have Angus 3:1 patties). Of the major chains, only Wendy's uses never-frozen beef, but even they use pre-formed patties. It would cost way too much for the chains to waste time making patties in store that can easily and cheaply be made by machine.
The reason the burger got sent to the crime lab: salt alone should not make one sick enough to go to the hospital. This then raises the question: was it in fact just salt, or was there something else that was used (in addition or in place of) the supposed salt overload? Could it have been some chemical that just tasted 'salty'? There are plenty of chemicals floating about the back half of a McDonald's, from degreaser to laundry detergent to floor cleaner. Or it could've been salt to cover up the taste of something ELSE introduced in the burger.
Personally, if some jerk with a grudge in the kitchen of a McD's made ME a sandwich that was tampered to the point of SENDING ME TO THE HOSPITAL, I'd want that person fired then prosecuted under the law. Food tampering AIN'T COOL!- FiftyPoints, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Urine is salty.
- Skellbasher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The statement was that she 'accidentally spilled too much salt on the hamburger meat". No mention is made of mixing, at least not in this article. It's reasonable to assume that she could have knocked over one of those big salt shakers on the grill they cook the patties on quite easily; restaurants like McD's have those things all over the place.
I can totally understand arresting her if it turns out there was something more foul involved, like chemicals. I'll even back off the crime lab statement to say it may have been worth it to get it tested.
However, if the crime lab comes back and says it's only salt, you just arrested this woman for nothing more than a simple kitchen accident that happens thousands of times across the country every hour, and made her put up $1000 bail for her trouble.
I had a friend that threw a snowball at a cop once while we were in college. (Yeah, he was drunk.) He was ROR, no bail.
This is excessive and an abuse of authority.
- brhad56, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The article doesn't say she was mixing up meat. It says she spilled salt on it. I don't know how McDonald's cook's their patties, but as a former Wendy's employee, they sprinkle salt on the patties after placing them on the grill. If the lid on the salt shaker were loose, it could very well spill salt all over the burger.
She should have thrown the oversalted patty out. They throw food waste out all the time. Regardless, this is no worse than serving under cooked fries or a stale bun. It does not endanger the customer. There is no evidence of her tampering with the food., nor does the article say the policeman was hospitalized. She shouldn't have sold him the over-salted burger, but it does not warrant criminal charges. The policeman should have just collected his free 'Opps!' coupon and moved on with his life.
- simongzster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32surprised the cop didn't push for attempted murder by high blood pressure.

- mojoel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30How is he sure it was the salt and not just the fact it was McDonald's food that made him sick?
- andshewas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Seriously. Hasn't he seen Fast Food Nation?
- artinreality, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19You guys, come one; let's be serious here. There is a war on terrorism going on. We can't have these terrorists over-salting our hamburgers. - one1plus1one, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If the US can now arrest and imprison its own citizens for a salty burger, just think of what they could do to a Canadian like me!
For example, let us say that as a Canadian I send a strongly worded letter to the above mentioned address, expressing my feelings about this case and the Union City Police in Georgia, does that mean, in theory, that the next time I cross over to the Vermont side of the border to go to the outlet mall, I can get flagged in the computer, arrested, and then sent to Guantanomo Bay? I think I could. - Zonku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Better watch it boy. You're going to get arrested for "Assisted Death Threat".

what job? 90% of the time they are eating donuts and finding a way to give tickets, 8% driving around. That 2% is almost never dangerous, you are watching way too much TV.
- nihilite, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20having worked in fast food as a teen, i can tell you this policeman should be absolutely ecstatic that salt is the worst thing he got in his burger. I have seen much, much worse.
- LoadStar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Hence my point above - who knows if salt is the only thing that this twit added to the cop's burger? I can see some teenage brat with a grudge against the cop thinking "Oooh, hey, a cop... lets see what all I can add to this burger without him noticing..." then dumping a ton of salt on the burger patty to cover up whatever the hell she did.
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Well considering the person who made it couldn't have known it was for a cop, your an idiot.
- LoadStar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It is VERY possible the person who made it could have known. Many McD's have a camera pointed on the Drive Thru lane. Another possibility is that the cop was a regular customer, and therefore easily recognizable by voice alone. Additionally, cars going through the Drive Thru lane drive past the first window before reaching the window where they pick up their food; the first window is right off the grill area in virtually all restaurants, which allows those in that area to easily see the car, and would allow plenty of time for the worker to tamper with the food.
Oh, and "you're" an idiot for not knowing "your" grammar.- Ndiggnation, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not, the frist windows is not usually anywhere in view of the grill area in most McD's. I worked in many all through H.S. In most stores the first window, or "Back drive", is behind a wall and down a corridor, completely out of view of anyone in the grill area. In all my time working there, I'd never have know of a cop was in drive unless I left the entire area and decided to stare out the back drive window for no reason.

2) taint it with something to make you sick
3) eat a bite
4) Profit!- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There was a book written by some famous hippy (Abby Hoffman?) called 'steal this book'..that outlined many such strategies to steal food from restaurants. Unfortunately, the greatest loss is usually to the wait-staff, who are already under-paid and overworked. You can't really get to the greedy, over-paid OWNERS.

- Kikinou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm scared to death of the police, and I'm a 30-something law abiding professional white man. They can arrest you for any reason whatsoever, if you look at them funny or if they're just having a slow day. I don't trust them, not in the least. In this day and age, with surveillance equipment being so available and able to transmit its images in real-time, I think that cops should all have cameras monitoring all of their duties. 1984, you say? You're damn right, it's not always a bad thing. Got to keep the powerful in check. What possible argument could there be against it? Should cops really have privacy when accosting citizens?
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You know, I feel the same way as you to an extent but I try to be proactive. Whenever I drive by a traffic cop I wave and smile. I actively try to make the police enjoy their job and like the people they serve, plus I admire and respect them for dedicating their lives to my safety. There are definitely bad apples, and those cops can be set off by a bad day, so I do my best to reduce that chance.
Pay it forward.- senatorpjt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Looking at a cop is a good way to get pulled over.
- ChayD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OTOH, some police are actually the good guys. A few years back, a couple of cops gave us a ride back from the train station, saving me a 2 mile walk, no arrests or anything were involved (I guess they were about to come off duty and decided to do a favour). Kudos to them.
