Dear Media: It's your job to report, not shame and disgrace yourselves like slathering mongrels fighting over a juicy bone. - dagobah77, on 10/12/2007, -13/+356Jack Thompson, "school shootings expert," is on Fox News talking about how video games caused this... That was fast.

Yes, civilians would get guns illegally. - sunchild, on 10/12/2007, -13/+182Jack Thompson on Fox, breaking down in crocodile tears and praying to God. Bill Hemmer's response after Jack literally said a prayer on the news? "Very eloquent, Jack", he said. What a journalist! What a network!
- gtluke, on 10/12/2007, -23/+192HELLO!
remember the utah mall shooting last year? guy walked into a mall and started blasting people? what ended that? nancy pelosi? no, it was a law abiding citizen with a CCW permit who put an EASY end to it by shooting the gunman.
$100 on this murderer didn't get his gun legally. so all the gun laws in the world aren't going to stop this. obviously he doesn't give a crap about breaking the law SINCE HE MURDERED 32 PEOPLE
i mean, i wouldn't want a weapons charge on top of that, it might get me a harsh jail sentence  - FizixMan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+164Virginia Tech policies don't create a killing ground. Killers create a killing ground.
Blame the school instead of the shooter? - tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -7/+153Jesus Christ. This was Jack Thompson on Fox News: "they found video games on his computer such as Counter Strike and Half Life 2...he even dressed up like the heroes in these games..in a country with more guns than people and a pop culture that glorifies shooting and killing..." This massacre is terrible, but you can't blame video games and pop culture. This guy was unstable and apparently willing to kill. Counter Strike didn't make him kill. But I do feelfor these poor guys at Virginia Tech. My prayers go out to them.
32 including shooter, last confirmed. - Aurostion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+135The local hospital is said to be full, and they were apparently triaging on site. This means that the death toll is likely to rise as people die from wounds.
Give blood. - ninth1dr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+131yeah i go to virginia tech, and this is out of control. There's no amount of security that could have prepared us for this. The residence halls were shutdown within ten seconds, and they did everything they could. I was right next to norris, in kogel, when it happened. We could here the gunshots, and saw the people jump out of the window.
I would strongly urge people on here to try to be a tad bit sensitive to people's feelings, we lost a lot of friends and family. - peorth, on 10/12/2007, -8/+132My God, this is so sad...
My condolences to the families - catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -30/+1461. If guns were allowed, no 18-23 year old kid is going to carry a concealed weapon around campus every day.
2. If guns were illegal, the shooter would have still gotten his hands on one.
Therefore, all this debate is totally pointless. I don't know if arguing is your way of coping with a tragedy, but you are all making asses out of yourselves. - otatop, on 10/12/2007, -11/+124"would 30 people have been killed today if civilians were not able to gain access to handguns?"
Last time I checked killing people was illegal, so if someone doesn't care about breaking that law 30 times, a trivial gun ban is going to be meaningless to them. - Shikamaru1337, on 10/12/2007, -6/+98Latest update, 32 confirmed dead, including shooter who killed himself. He was armed with 2 9mm pitsols and a bullet proof vest.
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8430 + the shooter..
http://www.newsique.com/us/gunman_kills_30_on_virginia_tech/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+90I am pretty sure you cease to be law abiding the minute you plan to a take a gun somewhere and kill a bunch of people.
And yes, just one other LAW ABIDING person with a gun could have stopped this. There is a reason that there has never been a mass killing at a gun show. And why criminals, gangs, and organized crime are some of the biggest supporters of anti-gun laws. It makes their lives a whole lot easier.
Remember that next time you support a law that takes guns out of the law abidings hands. Criminals will ALWAYS be able to get one if they want to. - hokiepokie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+71I am a Senior here at VT and it is a sad sad day here on campus. They are saying 31 dead and 28 injured. I am an Engineer and I am not looking forward to the day I look at the list of the dead from the Engineering building massacre and see a friend. Please pray for all those involved. This world can be cruel.
- imstellar28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+68I'm a student at VT and was in the building next to Norris when the shooting started. It's a completely terrible situation and absolutely unimaginable that someone would do this. It's really sickening to hear Jack Thompson and others try to use the deaths of these students and faculty to further their own policy whether it be pro guns/anti-guns/anti-video games so soon after the incident.
The shooter had two 9mm handguns with several clips and would walk into a classroom and empty a clip then move to the next room so I'm not sure even if someone had a gun on them, that they could draw it in time. There are 27,000 students on this campus so theres no way to search all the bags, or provide any significant preventative measure. You are never going to be able to stop someone from pulling a handgun or other weapon and killing people.
What bothers me is that the first shooting occurred at 7:30 and I went to class on campus at 9:15 and had no idea that someone was killed on campus two hours prior. Communication and preparedness is the only way to minimize the tragedy of such events. The school should have locked down the campus immediately. Even as I rushed back to my vehicle after the shooting, people were still coming to class. Secondly, students should be trained to deal with such situations via drills, so when they hear a gunshot they shouldn't ask "what was that?" or "what should we do?" they should instantly and instinctively close the door and push a desk in front of it. - Waterispoison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+68Jack Thompson was just on Fox News. He was titled as "Jack Thompson; Lawyer, School Shooting Expert"
He made me sick when he said that the shooter probably was "trained" playing Doom. - Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -8/+75I wouldn't call this person who caused this "law abiding". As bluntly and poorly the lead thread put it, he is sort of right. Something like this could have happened even if all guns were abolished. If a man is crazy enough to want to shoot 30 people, he is probably crazy enough to find a way to get illegal firearms.

Rumor about the identity
According to unconfirmed rumors available to The Reference Frame, the
killer was a 6-foot tall male Asian - I suppose East Asian - student
between 20 and 25 years from Radford University whose girlfriend from
Virginia Tech left him. He had two guns (at least one of which was a 9
mm caliber handgun) and wore a vest - probably a bulletproof vest - with
too much ammunition as well as a maroon cap and a black leather
jacket.
In the morning around 7:15 am, he went to her dormitory in the West
Ambler Johnston Hall. She was not there so he shot her roommate and
the residential assistant. They didn't shut down the university, so he
continued and tried to find the ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend in the
classroom of the Norris Hall (engineering) a few hours later. He didn't
know the exact location, so he has visited a few classes, lined up all
students against a wall, and shot them one by one - and then himself
by a shot into his head. - Lisztman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+62I find it fascinating how those cops are carrying that injured student in the included picture.
Is it even possible carry an injured individual WORSE? =( - MasterLJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+54Here's the e-mails sent to Virginia Tech students with timestamps.

Shooting at Virginia Tech / Statement by President Charles W. Steger
The university was struck today with a tragedy of monumental proportions. There were two shootings on campus. In each case, there were fatalities. The university is shocked and horrified that this would befall our campus. I want to extend my deepest, sincerest and most profound sympathies to the families of these victims which include students There are 22 confirmed deaths.
We currently are in the process of notifying families of victims. The Virginia Tech Police are being assisted by numerous other jurisdictions. Crime scenes are being investigated by the FBI, University Police, and State Police. We continue to work to identify the victims impacted by this tragedy. I cannot begin to covey my own personal sense of loss over this senselessness of such an incomprehensible and heinous act The university will immediately set up counseling centers. So far centers have been identified in Ambler Johnson and the Cook Counseling Center to work with our campus community and families.
Here are some of the facts we know:
At about 7:15 a.m. this morning a 911 call came to the University Police Department concerning an event in West Amber Johnston Hall. There were multiple shooting victims. While in the process of investigating, about two hours later the university received reports of a shooting in Norris Hall. The police immediately responded. Victims have been transported to various hospitals in the immediate area in the region to receive emergency treatment.
We will proceed to contact the families of victims as identities are available.
All classes are cancelled and the university is closed for the remainder for the today. The university will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. but classes will be cancelled on Tuesday. The police are currently staging the release of people from campus buildings.
Families wishing to reunite with the students are suggested to meet at the Inn at Virginia Tech. We are making plans for a convocation tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon at Cassell Coliseum for the university community to come together to begin to deal with the tragedy.

Can someone explain how it took 2 hours for them to call in the _real_ police? Couldn't the 9:30 shootings been prevented if they called the off-campus authorities immediately? - tdrizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Watching all of these douchebags use tragedies to further their own political agendas is sickening.
- OUberLord, on 10/12/2007, -12/+49Jesus H., that cell phone footage is a little disturbing. Did the cameraman get hit or was that a narrow miss? Who was screaming at the end?
- Aurostion, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Most schools have policies like that actually.
- b0wl0fud0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36As someone who used to be a practicing EMT, the way they were carrying the victim was not appropriate under normal conditions, but I'd hardly consider this situation as normal. Under normal circumstances, there would likely be complete immobilization with a neck brace, spine board... etc. However, there's simply no time to do an evaluation, and the priority is to get the victim while at the same time keeping the individuals escorting the patient outside of harm's way. I think the victim would most certainly prefer staying alive with a possibility of spinal chord injury than waiting for the situation to stabilize and possibly bleeding to death while waiting.
- billucf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Jack Thompson is on Fox News right now blaming video games for what happened at VT today. Said the person probably trained on video games beforehand.
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -9/+43You idiot, the guy in this situation killed 30-40 people, after is all said and done, and he used pistols. This shows that you are ignorant. Also, banning guns does nothing. Did you know that VT is a "gun free zone"? Lot of good that did. The same will go with banning guns, only those who are law abiding, will abide the law.
- gtluke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36yes, the man's job was he was a police officer. but he was not on duty. police officers are citizens like you and i.

- plnegative1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38"would 30 people have been killed today if civilians were not able to gain access to handguns?"
most crimes are committed with firearms obtained through the black market (ie illegal) - Aurostion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Well, if they're not worried about a spinal injury and needed to move him in a hurry it works, but yes, that's not the best way to carry an injured individual.
- TheRapture, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I go to Virginia Tech.... The shooter did all of this just because of his girlfriend which he found and killed. After this he killed himself. From what I have seen and heard he killed 45-50 people (what the media is not telling you). Also, almost 60 people were injured. Many died because the helicopters around the area like Roanoke (The closest hospital capable of handling this type) could not take off because of the winds were almost 50 mph.
BTW: I am an engineering major and I was one floor above the dorms that he began in. Also, a few were injured because there tried to jump from the building and broke ankles etc.... - lathicentropy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32insightful story/essay Roger Ebert wrote about when reviewing the movie "Elephant" (and where my previous comment spawned in my head from):
"Let me tell you a story. The day after Columbine, I was interviewed for the Tom Brokaw news program. The reporter had been assigned a theory and was seeking sound bites to support it. "Wouldn't you say," she asked, "that killings like this are influenced by violent movies?" No, I said, I wouldn't say that. "But what about 'Basketball Diaries'?" she asked. "Doesn't that have a scene of a boy walking into a school with a machine gun?" The obscure 1995 Leonardo Di Caprio movie did indeed have a brief fantasy scene of that nature, I said, but the movie failed at the box office (it grossed only $2.5 million), and it's unlikely the Columbine killers saw it.
The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. "Events like this," I said, "if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn't have messed with me. I'll go out in a blaze of glory."
In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, the NBC Nightly News and all the other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of "explaining" them. I commended the policy at the Sun-Times, where our editor said the paper would no longer feature school killings on Page 1. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy." - resta6, on 01/12/2009, -0/+30QUOTE:
Ok, I'll shed some light from a VT student's perspective. I am a graduating senior at VT.
I have been getting a lot of information from our car club here on campus, we have a lot of people that were in the building and those that know people in the building.
The most prevalent story is that the guy went and killed his girlfriend because of a love triangle, and that after he killed her and shot the R.A. he went and waited across campus for the guy to get to his class (there was a 2 hour time difference) and then he went down the hall opening doors and firing into rooms indiscriminately with 2 9mm pistols.
I will pass a story from one of the guys in the rooms:
Quote:
"Zach just got back and he told us his story. he can tell u the details better but he deserves to be recognized immediately. He was in norris hall and heard the gunshots comign from down the hall. while others hid in the class room zach got up and got a few others to help him baracade the door with desks. He could hear the gunman coming down the hall opening doors n firing into class rooms. Zach then saw his door handle turn and the gun man tried to get in but zach and the others slammed the door back shut and got on the ground holding the door shut with desks. zach then said he heard the the gunman reload and fired two shots directly through the door luckily didnt hit anybody. the gunman then turned and left walking down the hall to continue on"
National media is going to be here soon, I've heard Pelosi is going to make an appearance.
It is just unbelievable that this could happen here. I also have a feeling that things here are going to change a lot. And graduating is less than a month away
