- MalaysianMafia, on 04/06/2009, -0/+9Well, its certainly refreshing to hear about one of these greedy ***** actually physically going out and stealing money the old fashioned way...
- leontes, on 04/06/2009, -1/+9There are tens of thousands of individuals who scheme, manipulate, plunder and prey on the weaknesses of their fellow men. Not all may do it on the scale of Madoff and Dreier, but human beings rationalize their theft through moral back-flips internally. They believe that when they are doing it, it's okay, cause the person they are stealing from 'deserves' to be robbed. It's a sad state of affairs when we must spend time in vigilance to protect ourselves from such predators, but until humans naturally think of our neighbor as our brother, we shall continue to place self-interest over collective interest; this kind of situation will be all too commonplace.
- borez, on 04/06/2009, -0/+5The whole economic banking system IMO is one big fraud operation, and the more I'm learning about it from the crash, the more it's becoming apparent.
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -0/+4Quote"An attorney's stock in trade is sound judgment and wise counsel"................
Since when do Lawyers move on sound judgments and wise counsel?... Oh ya when it comes in denominations of 1's ,5's ,10's, 20's, 50's ,100's .....THE HIGHER THE WISER - MalaysianMafia, on 04/06/2009, -1/+4because this is America and its a pretty diverse place, so its nice to have details like ethnicity to flesh out a story, but not necessary if the person is white, since they are the majority and you can generally just assume that the subject of a story is as well unless otherwise stated?
- CamperBob, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3It takes awhile to RTFA, mostly because the author never uses five words when ten will do, but it gets good towards the end. Dreier's shenanigans with other peoples' business cards and conference rooms deserve recognition by both the SEC and the patent office.
- thefangedrabbit, on 04/06/2009, -1/+4What really gets me is that the government is allowed to run a Ponzi scheme without anyone questioning it. That's really all social security is, a big Ponzi scheme. Why is the government allowed to do things with money that would get a citizen thrown in jail?
- Stingwolf, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3Because they have the police and the military.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+2Why they're allowed to do it is the easy question to answer, as we've already seen. My question is more subtle. Does allowing the government to commit these crimes with impunity encourage & inspire criminals like Madoff, Stanford, and now Dreier when under a system with a more honest basis they'd stay honest instead? I think it does, but I have no proof beyond my suspicions.
- Amnesia10, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2260 attorneys with their reputations trashed as well. Quite an achievement, even Madoff or Enron look amateurs in comparison.
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2The police and military are their legalized gang
- BurgGuy, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2Madoff's jewish connections were mentioned often, as he treated his fellow congregants as primary marks to be fleeced.
Dreier looks like any other equal opportunity bastard out to steal a buck. - honeybrass, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1We humans really are jerks, aren't we? Maybe some self-righteous alien civilization should come and wipe us out.
- BJH1412, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2Those two guys' actions, although despicable, are not motivated by religion. If Islam is mentioned it will generally be because their actions are encouraged by their religious leaders, like a honor killing or that type of *****. If you start classifying everybody under what religious group they belong to, you spark even more hatred between different groups for no reason. I'm sure you'll agree that we don't need more hatred than we already have.
- thedeadwalrus, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2"[The Obama Administration is] basically trying to launder the money to avoid complying with the plain language of the law," said David Zaring, a former Justice Department attorney who defended the government from lawsuits involving related legal issues. "They are trying to create a loophole to ignore Congress, and I think the courts will think that it's ridiculous."
I.e., they are using middlemen to avoid executive compensation and other restrictions for the bailout money. Wonderful, eh?
http://digg.com/business_finance/Obama_Using_Middl ... - inactive, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Another one for my bulging "but e-gold & the Liberty Dollar were the problem" files.
- cornfeed, on 04/06/2009, -3/+3That's "as our brother" as in Cain and Able right? And self-interest will almost always rise over the collective. And to think it should be otherwise, is a foolish disconnect from the real world. Grow up and get over it.
In any case, this kind of stuff will go on as along as there are two humans in existence. And the reason it works is because those who would fall prey to such machinations, are perhaps even greedier than those who prey upon them. - inactive, on 04/06/2009, -1/+1...and his name is Obama.
- TheThirdWheel, on 04/06/2009, -1/+1Great read, the entire scheme brought down because someone finally took 10 seconds to check their sources. Millions and millions paid out on someone's word, and these are the people running hedge funds? When I think of someone who runs a hedge fund I imagine them putting weeks of research into any major deal, not handing over millions to any huckster promising 11% returns. They all get what they deserve, with the exception of the lawyers who will be tarnished through no fault of their own by choosing the wrong firm to work for; but who cries when lawyers get *****?
- Boeing777, on 04/06/2009, -4/+2strange how the press persists with its double standard in reporting these crimes. If they were from middle eastern islamic descent; the word muslim would've been mentioned more than a few times.
Madoff and Dreier have one thing in common, yet our "media" and their double standard chose to give us just what they want us to hear.
Sure it's irrelevant to mention that both are jews but why do we bother mentioning others religion of ethnic background for crimes that are far less important?
something to think about. - Ray_Justice, on 04/06/2009, -5/+1You sir, should get a comment of the month award.
