- rupprupp29, on 12/21/2007, -4/+248The orange areas are slightly darker than the yellow ones, and the red are even darker than the orange.
- Xeworlebi, on 07/25/2008, -4/+193what is the difference between red, orange and the yellow spots on the map?
- jasonroeber, on 12/21/2007, -13/+170They do have one very valuable resource, wind power, that region has some of the best wind resources in north america, could be the next oil.
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -2/+129All this talk about "secession" is a red herring, the Lakota were never a state and have always been a nation, before the USA was one. They are withdrawing from treaties, not seceding from the Union.
I wish to associate myself with the comments of my colleague who said "I doubt the government cares," its undoubtably going to be business as usual until the Indians resort to force or civil disobedience. - ZenFountain, on 12/21/2007, -1/+119Half my state just became a new nation...I guess?
- acroyear2, on 12/21/2007, -16/+119I don't think Christians or African Americans have any real claim above the Native Americans.
Texas might secede though. - crapmatic, on 12/21/2007, -4/+86Slowly, the geography of Snow Crash becomes reality.
- coheedcollapse, on 12/21/2007, -2/+82Holy crap. When I first heard the news I thought their land was something like a hundred miles square or something. This really puts it into perspective and also reminds me how unlikely it is that this would actually go through. Even if they legally own it and can legally back out of it, I doubt the government cares.
Also I have some family members in Rapid City, SD. I wonder how they feel about this whole thing. - JacobFromMT, on 12/21/2007, -1/+78*****... I'm in the yellow!!!
Can I legally own a casino now? - bigskank, on 12/21/2007, -1/+76The U.S. government won't care until people who live there/move there say that they are under the power of the Lakota Sovereign Nation and refuse to pay their U.S. federal income taxes. When the U.S. marshals come to serve process on the tax-evaders, that's when we'll get some real answers. If the Lakota territory is a foreign nation, service of process for court materials are invalid. A U.S. tribunal would have to rule on whether or not the Lakota territory is within U.S. control still, or actually is now its own independent sovereign.
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -2/+72I'm guessing that's South Lakota?
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -2/+64The yellow area is the Lakota's territory per their conditions of surrender to the colonialists. The red area is the territory currently claimed by the Lakota. I presume by withdrawing from the treaty they are attempting to prevent their land from shrinking any further.
- Vincent21212, on 12/21/2007, -10/+71Texas won't secede. The U.S. has become one giant Texas anyway.
- digasound, on 12/21/2007, -14/+74Im rootin for'em.
- blindhammer, on 12/21/2007, -3/+59Wonder how many nukes are in that region.
- airwalkery2k, on 12/21/2007, -1/+56Yep. That includes my hometown of Omaha. I'll have to tell the folks they no longer live in the United States.
- WootZoot, on 12/21/2007, -3/+58They call it "Maize"
- S1ngular1ty1, on 12/21/2007, -5/+57Those are the primary, secondary, and tertiary bombing zones.
- cazbot, on 12/21/2007, -10/+62I can't wait to move there.
- mcool119, on 12/21/2007, -2/+47Because genocide wouldn't be complete political suicide by the government.
- prosayik, on 12/21/2007, -2/+47I can't wait! Finally, decent pizza delivery.
- hillkiwi, on 12/21/2007, -3/+48Imagine if they start blocking highways and asking for passports.

- acroyear2, on 12/21/2007, -4/+33I'm not sure why someone dug you down but yeah, I imagine there's a lot of good resources there.
- duggtodeath, on 12/21/2007, -13/+42It's cool, the NAU was gonna erase America's borders anyways.
- zeejay, on 12/21/2007, -2/+29They denote the concentration of casinos.
- Clark1984, on 12/21/2007, -7/+34This is absolutely ridiculous, I am officially in the yellow right now. I'm prepared to be burried but give me a chance here. I work up in the western part of North Dakota and do oil and gas leasing. My experience and second hand stories have nothing good to say about the people that live on the reservations.
They have millions upon millions of dollars worth of oil but very few companies are willing to deal with them. In the past they always throw the contract out the window and demand that the crew be tribal workers. These workers have no training so they get paid to sit there while an educated crew does the work. There government is made of less than a dozen elementary school educated elders who have the power of all three branches of the government. It is literally like trying to get business deals done with 4th graders.
I've driven down the highway that runs through the reservation and there is a cross on the side of the rode every 100 yards. These people are killing themselves by the dozens with drunk driving. The reservation system is a very sad thing and shows what happens when a welfare state goes out of control.
A treaty is a treaty. Are they going to just take over our lake cabin? If you take away the rule of law violence is all you get. The three tribes reservation is millions in debt, I doubt their debiters will just forget about it. These people will be screwed when the government cuts off their checks.
I really hope things can go well for the Natives. They have been screwed in the past, but so has every other group. People need to live in the present. - Ghost_MH, on 12/21/2007, -0/+26Technically, Mt Rushmore should be theirs...It was kinda, sorta built on the land that was promised to them. Speaking of which...How fantastically wonderful is it that the US gives this huge chunk of land to this tribe of people and then go on to create a monument to themselves right in the middle of it on the face of a huge ass mountain???
- squeaker, on 12/21/2007, -27/+52Good riddance.
- archer104, on 12/21/2007, -1/+26"...loose."
Blast!! Now the Grammer Nazis are sure to find us! Here, take my gun, we'll meet up in the rendevouz spot at midnight. Go now!! - pintomp3, on 12/21/2007, -2/+27if i invade your home and kill your family you will just say "oh well, i lost?"
- AJRiddle, on 12/21/2007, -3/+27Or maybe something very valuable now. Corn.
- JoeMax, on 12/21/2007, -0/+24The yellow is the Lakota's traditional area they lived in as a nomadic people. (though shared with a several other nomadic/non-nomadic tribes, some of them now lumped into the "Sioux" name). It is bordered by the Missouri/Yellowstone Rivers on the North and East, the Platte/North Platte Rivers on the South, and the Big Horn River on the west.
The Orange section represents the area they currently claim as being theirs. The Dark areas are the reservations currently setup by the US Government. Reservations in this area are: Rosebud, Pine Ridge, Santee, Cheyenne River, Standing Rock, Crow Creek, Yankton, Omaha, and Winnebago. Not all of these are denoted on the map.
For more information see state maps available at nationalatlas.gov - SIRBERUS, on 12/21/2007, -2/+25Unless you live in the Garden of Eden, you most likely live on blood-stained soil yourself.
- Napoleone, on 12/21/2007, -3/+25Succeed. Isn't that what people against welfare like to argue; that it hinders progress? They'll do just fine.
- ShugNinx21, on 12/21/2007, -1/+23What are you doing on land your ancestors stole from whomever? Virtually every country in the world is built upon land that was seized from the former occupants at some time or another.
- jon30041, on 12/21/2007, -4/+25What makes the red man red? His region on the new Lakota Nation map!
- triskele, on 12/21/2007, -0/+21So why didn't you post the whole damn thing in the first place? The picture alone makes me think, "Oh *****! They got Mt. Rushmore." Bush would have a field day with that.
- thomas, on 12/21/2007, -2/+23Even if they got their way (they won't) they would be a minority population in their own country. We have far more white people in those areas then Native Americans.
PS: I live in the yellow area of South Dakota on that map. - kinerry, on 12/21/2007, -3/+23They make bank with casinos
- Foliot, on 12/21/2007, -6/+26We have our own First Nation problems. Thanks for the offer though, really... Thanks.
Ya jerk. - bosssmiley, on 12/21/2007, -0/+20Not quite right. The yellow is what the 1868 Treaties agreed to be the bounds of white and Lakota lands. The orange is what the 1876 settlement (after the invasion of the Black Hills by miners, Custer, etc.) gave them. The dark purplish-red specks are what the Lakota have today.
"So long as the sun shall shine and the grass shall grow."
Time to pay 130 years back-rent. :-) - dtraneighty8, on 10/07/2008, -0/+20Comment still applies.
- MacTyler, on 12/21/2007, -6/+26SPAM: Links to XXX video which tries to install a trojan codec. bury bury bury
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -2/+22The land was *theirs* for thousands of years before we came and just claimed *their* backyard as ours.
