- fuzzyshrapnel, on 01/04/2008, -7/+475can someone please explain to the police that they can't taser you for simply disobeying their orders? I wonder what the punishment would be if I were to taser someone who didn't listen to me.
- m00kie, on 01/04/2008, -63/+8i wonder how many couples have taken 'tazer play' into the bedroom :)
- CondoleezzaRice, on 01/04/2008, -7/+17who wants to imagine pigs *****, ugh
- nospinhere, on 01/04/2008, -13/+1What are they supposed to do then when you disobey their orders, shoot you?
- supermanred, on 01/04/2008, -3/+8No, they are supposed to then physically restrain you, it's part of their training. Unfortunately most police departments have been forced in recent years into hiring tiny, weak people to be police officers and in a lot of cases they have to resort to tasering because they simply cannot physically restrain anyone.
I for one would be pissed if I called the cops to break up a fight or save my ass and a 90 pound woman showed up. She better have a ***** gun with her, or they can tell her to stay at the station.
Anyways, they are supposed to hold you down and cuff you or whatever method of restraining you, they are not supposed to shoot you with a weapon that has been proven to be fatal in many cases. - nospinhere, on 01/04/2008, -11/+3ohh, so it's safer for a cop to physically restrain you, take you to the ground, bend your arm in places it shouldn't go, and put you in a choke hold. Yep, no injuries ever occurred that way. You have it all figured out.
- williamdyer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6If you are not being violent, they could give you a summons. Cops are supposed to serve and protect, courts try, and corrections punish.
- cmackattack, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5just because you have a badge I am suppose to listen and adhere to whatever it is you have to say? I think not fascist....
There needs to be basis for their restraint....and coming onto someone's property and tazing them is purely assault with a deadly weapon... nothing more or less. Send the pig to jail. - nospinhere, on 01/05/2008, -2/+1Give you a summons? lol, you idiots have no clue what it's like out in the real world. Have fun in fantasy land and don't tase me bra!

- williamdyer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4If it wasn't for tasers, cops would be beating their wives like in the olde days.

- aukxsona, on 01/04/2008, -15/+45Petition to ban tasers
http://digg.com/world_news/Ban_Tasers_as_Torture_D ...
Follow the digg article.- RedS0x, on 01/04/2008, -67/+9Tasers can be quite useful, actually. I don't think this is abuse of power, I agree with the guy you responded to. If someone disobeyes the police's orders, the policeman/woman should do whatever is necessary to correct that, within reason, of course.
It was just stupidity on the man with the camera's part, in my opinion.
(bracing for burryage)- mrgono3, on 01/04/2008, -14/+12naw the guy isnt stupid. the police should take it easy on the taser use. If they were carrying guns they would have never even pulled them out. Its just that they know that tasers wont do any real damage.
- Bhima, on 01/04/2008, -0/+14Tell that to the people who have died from being tazered
- gm33, on 01/04/2008, -2/+31Stupdity? Isn't it his right to film? So your saying Rosa Parks is stupid for not getting up and moving?
- RedS0x, on 01/04/2008, -39/+4I'm not saying he has no right to film, I'm saying that when a police officer tells you to do something, do it, within reason.
- schroeder, on 01/04/2008, -0/+50If police are doing something illegal, and you are filming it, they should not be able to use force to suppress the evidence. What other option do you have as defense in such a situation? Your word against a cops?
- gm33, on 01/04/2008, -1/+17I really do agree with that, but we too often see them doing so for no real vaild reason, or to cover up an illegal action (warentless searches, etc). There has to be a time when you can't comply.
- mmdieterich, on 01/04/2008, -2/+16Rosa Parks did call shotgun.
- LeeSoong, on 01/04/2008, -0/+36Rosa Parks today would be tasered and tossed in prison.
So much for her civil rights - civil rights were so pre-9/11 - JonForTheWin, on 01/04/2008, -1/+20>do it, within reason.
Which it wasn't - RedS0x, on 01/04/2008, -22/+2To all of the replies:
Okay, but I still think it takes a certain degree of stupidity to not comply. If a police officer told me to do something, my natural reaction would be to do it, no questions asked...maybe I'm stupid, I don't know. - Otto, on 01/04/2008, -0/+18Redsox: Actually, he has every right to film. First amendment, freedom of the press.
- EditorResponse, on 01/04/2008, -0/+12I think the tasers are getting over used.
- hwy61, on 01/04/2008, -1/+15You're not stupid to blindly follow the police's orders. You're just being a good little citizen. Good boy, have a cookie, don't piddle on the carpet. Maybe later I'll let you out to play.
- Balt, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7Within reason? Obviously you are not aware of our civil liberties. I agree with LeeSoong about Rosa Parks. The Post 9-11 world is all about restricitng what liberties you think you have. The Police State is here. Obey your masters and no one will get hurt.
- mrgono3, on 01/04/2008, -14/+12naw the guy isnt stupid. the police should take it easy on the taser use. If they were carrying guns they would have never even pulled them out. Its just that they know that tasers wont do any real damage.
- Andareed, on 01/04/2008, -4/+47Tasers aren't the problem. The problem is that police use them inappropriately, often due to poor training. When it comes down to it, you're more likely to die from a bullet wound than from a tasering.
- ThndrShk2k, on 01/04/2008, -4/+24Problem is taserings are becoming a hell of a lot more common than bullet wounds. Everyone's body does different things in reaction to electricity. These things we have not studied fully. Some people can drain batteries by touching them, and have all sorts of problems with electronics. Some people seem to get zapped all the time, yet never fry any electronics they zap.
With that information, it is unlikely to get a solid statement on the ratio of taserings per serious injury/death, but doing something more often because it's less lethal doesn't mean it won't kill as many people, if not more. These can be written off as rarities, and will be completely ignored.
I don't advocate inappropriate use of tasers, nor do i want to ban them. I just prefer they use a device that helps them take down a suspect in a more solidly proven non-lethal manner, and use it within reason. There is a reason why most people don't ***** with electricity, and why we are still studying it's effects on objects and organisms. - jaxcs, on 01/04/2008, -1/+34It is entirely too polite to call excessive taser use due to poor training. The police know exactly how painful it can be. And that is exactly why they use the taser. It isn't used for self defense or even against the unruly; it's used to punish those that don't immediately jump at their beck and call. What is needed is to raise the bar as to when taser use is appropriate. Each taser firing should be investigated as seriously as the firing of a hand gun.
- poiuytrewq44, on 01/04/2008, -0/+14I entirely agree, they were supposed to be used in lieu of a hand gun (you know, when you would have NORMALLY used a gun, but you have a nice less-lethal weapon instead). But they've abused these things to hell and back again. Either there needs to be serious reform, or bannings.
- Balt, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5I disagree. Tasers are a problem. Cops have taken these as their new toy and now use it instead of clubbing you to death. The fact that they have been touted as being safe gives the police carte blanche to use these frequently and without prejudice. There used to be a time when you were either shot or beaten, now they take great pleasure in electrocuting you. Take Rodney King, he would probably have been tasered and fried instead of clubbed. The incident at Tompkins Square Park in NYC where the protesters were beaten with night sticks and trampled by the police on horseback, especially those that were filming it all is another incident that would have ended differently. The Police State is alive and well in AmeriKa. Bow down to your masters or face the consequences.

- heavystone, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8And what if you have a pacemaker? Won't the taser kill you?
- Whatwedo, on 01/04/2008, -2/+0How long have you been on the internet to not know that online petitions do ***** all?
- RedS0x, on 01/04/2008, -67/+9Tasers can be quite useful, actually. I don't think this is abuse of power, I agree with the guy you responded to. If someone disobeyes the police's orders, the policeman/woman should do whatever is necessary to correct that, within reason, of course.
- HerrEisenheim, on 01/04/2008, -17/+9What do you mean "can't"? Clearly, they can. There's at least one video a week of something like this.
You mean shouldn't? - Pake, on 01/04/2008, -14/+2Maybe you should clarify what you mean by disobeying orders, because I bet this lady would have loved the police to not taser the guy just because he was disobeying their orders: http://www.wbtv.com/news/topstories/13021462.html
- Magnj, on 01/04/2008, -1/+37Just because a cop tells you to do something does not mean it is the LAW, I think that is what he was getting at. A cop can NOT tell you to stop filming them, because it is your right to do so. The man was ordered to do so but was not obligated to by law.
- LeeSoong, on 01/04/2008, -1/+26"No Thank you officer, I will continue filming your public actions in a public place - The ACLU has informed me of my constitutional civil rights, and I expect you will uphold the law by respecting my rights."
- fotbr, on 01/04/2008, -1/+27@LeeSoong
You'd get about as far as "no" before the cop would taser you. You'd never get the rest out.- LeeSoong, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Would officers attack an ABC camera man?
Perhaps get a name badge for yourself: " INDEPENDENT PRESS "
The courts have ruled that bloggers have similar rights as TV journalists...
- LeeSoong, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Would officers attack an ABC camera man?

- spucky, on 01/04/2008, -1/+19Ya know, I really hate all these instances where police use tasers in inappropriate situations and think they should be strictly punished for it, but your comment made me think about how I could apply them for full effect in my workplace.
- bitspace, on 01/04/2008, -24/+5There's a lot of gray area. We as citizens are legally obliged to obey the lawful commands of a law enforcement officer. This might differ by jurisdiction, but I think you'll find some variation very close to that in all jurisdictions in the US. According to the law our only recourse is to take it up with the courts after the fact. It gets even more hazy when the officer's commands are of questionable legality... but common sense still says he's the guy representing the law at that point in time, and is the guy with the gun (or taser, as the case may be).
- Otto, on 01/04/2008, -4/+27A law enforcement officer cannot lawfully command you to do anything unless he is placing you under arrest and charging you with a crime.
- thinsoldier, on 01/04/2008, -1/+7yeah, if the cop said "turn off the camera or go to jail" or even better "I'm placing you under arrest for having that camera turned on" then I'd be more likely to comply.
a) I don't want to go to jail even though I doubt the legality of his threat
b) If I'm certain he intends to wrongfully arrest me and I have it recorded on tape already I'll gladly turn off the camera and start figuring out how much money I can get in court for the wrongful arrest. - mstoneburner, on 01/04/2008, -8/+10Sorry Otto, but you're wrong on the law.
- williamdyer, on 01/04/2008, -3/+3If the sort of pig who goes around "commanding" the people he works for had his guts carved out of his body with a serrated knive and was being filmed while splashing around dying in his ***** and liquids, I would intervene and ask the camerman "would you like me to hold an extra light over here, I think the video might come out better."
Feel the hate of everyone around you, pig. - Otto, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6mstoneburner: No, actually, I'm not. Please point to the section of law that says that all people must obey any order a police officer gives.
In other words, until you can back up your claim, STFU.
- RedReplicant, on 01/04/2008, -0/+10mstoneburner, can we get a better explaination than just "you're wrong" please?
- thinsoldier, on 01/04/2008, -1/+7yeah, if the cop said "turn off the camera or go to jail" or even better "I'm placing you under arrest for having that camera turned on" then I'd be more likely to comply.
- Otto, on 01/04/2008, -4/+27A law enforcement officer cannot lawfully command you to do anything unless he is placing you under arrest and charging you with a crime.
- KipBond, on 01/04/2008, -3/+16I think it depends on the state. In some states, disobeying their orders is considered "passive resistance" and they can get you to comply by various means (inc. tasering in some states).
- wedgemartin, on 01/04/2008, -4/+27Isn't this also known as 'torture'
- mstoneburner, on 01/04/2008, -16/+3No, it isn't.
- cmackattack, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/torture
- cawpin, on 01/04/2008, -22/+2@fuzzyshrapnel - There's only one problem with that situation. You have legal authority to tell anyone what to do. Police do. Stop being a *****.
- nicholai, on 01/05/2008, -1/+1Police are supposed to be serving us, not bossing us around and torturing those who don't comply with their illegal orders.
- phre3k187, on 01/04/2008, -19/+10***** da police
- kalleanka, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6I don't get the laws in America.
So the police dogs sniffed their way to some yard/house and the police was looking for a robber. Why on earth are the polices in a case like this forbidden to enter? I know, it's someones property, but what would prevent the robbers to run into a area owned by their friend and he tells the cops they can't come there and they need to get a search warrant that takes days/weeks/whatever to get?
That is ridicilous. The tasering was of course wrong. The cop was an ass. But why can they not follow a murdr/bank robber/whatever when they suspect he is somewhere and there is an actual chase going on?- mdunn79, on 01/04/2008, -0/+10They can follow them sans warrant in circumstances like you described -- it's called "exigent circumstances".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exigent_circumstance- kalleanka, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1So then it was not illegal... was it?
The search was fully legal and the guys with the camera complained for no reason about the "illegal search".
The tasering was still bad, no doubt. But search was ok as I see it.- nicholai, on 01/05/2008, -1/+1They were at the wrong property and destroying a car. The suspect was not even in the car the cops destroyed, try to keep up on the facts.
- kalleanka, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1So then it was not illegal... was it?
- kauthon, on 01/04/2008, -3/+9because next time the police will start having fake robbers run across a yard and have dogs to help them investigate instead of getting a warrant. Then there goes more civil liberties. Police have already started leaving wallets around new york and arresting people for picking them up. You can look it up on google news.
- Orion682, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4It's not the same thing. In this case, had they hypothetically found something on the property other than the robber, it'd be inadmissible in court. They'd have to get a warrant and come back to take it.
Know your rights. - phazon88, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Yeah I saw that wallet thing on the news. That's *****. What's to say they wouldn't hand it in to the police?
- Orion682, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4It's not the same thing. In this case, had they hypothetically found something on the property other than the robber, it'd be inadmissible in court. They'd have to get a warrant and come back to take it.

- Zippo, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5What is it with cops and abusing force? First they were shooting people dead... and now that they've been given "non-lethal" weapon... they must feel that since it's less harmful, they can use it more.
- krasht, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2You'll be glad to know that recently, tasers got a green light for use, here in Australia :(
- jawboot, on 04/01/2008, -0/+0australia has a completely different culture to the nation in this digg article
- m00kie, on 01/04/2008, -63/+8i wonder how many couples have taken 'tazer play' into the bedroom :)
- Goodanswer, on 01/04/2008, -4/+140"cops stated camera "could be used as a weapon?"
only to put her on Digg so women know what not to wear.- diggingaround, on 01/04/2008, -0/+9I'm surprised that cops didn't destroy that tape and camera!
- goldendragon2, on 01/04/2008, -0/+14THAT camera IS a weapon. Its like a bazooka for the lawsuit thats going to happen...
- Bakrain, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4I was going to say exactly the same thing. The camera is a very dangerous weapon, and after viewing a few videos similar to this one I plan on purchasing a small video camera and take it with me everywhere I go.
- SeethisPass, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5If police give unlawful orders then you must prove that in court. If you cannot film them in the act that prevents proving that they did something unlawful Filming EVERYTHING that the government on any level does is paramount to the protection of the citizens. They certainly have no qualms about filming you.
- Balt, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3You are right about that. Every time there is any type of public protest or demonstration, there are agents of the police, IE authorities, filming the event and making sure to get all the faces that are in the crowd. They do it mostly to intimidate the crowds and keep a record of the faces of those that are protesting. You have just as much right, but remember that when they believe they are doing something wrong, they will eliminate the evidence and or those recording it. You may not necessarily get killed but you may come close. The police know the tasers are unsafe, but because it has been publicly announced as safe, they abuse it. If they kill someone with it, they will claim it was something else. Not all cops are bad but a few bad apples will make them all look guilty.
- Jacob3d, on 01/04/2008, -26/+259Hope this guy wins his lawsuit, cops are useless.
- stealth45, on 01/04/2008, -54/+17Yea man, ***** living in safe communities...
- ordig, on 01/04/2008, -11/+56The only thing not safe about my community is the cops.
- threemagic, on 01/04/2008, -21/+10You shouldn't get dugg down...
I wonder how you'd feel if cops read that statement and made it perfectly clear they would NOT go to your house, no matter what the issue was.- demonsnake69, on 01/04/2008, -2/+12If the cops don't do their job for whatever reason they don't get paid -- that'll definitely motivate them.
- GreyICE, on 01/04/2008, -2/+17Just fine. I know my 2nd amendment rights. Only thing that would change is I would have less of a chance of being hurt or killed by people on a power trip.
- sv650touring, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5I take it you don't live in DC...or Chicago...or NYC...or any number of American cities that will put you in jail for exercising your 2nd Amendment rights
- kd1s, on 01/04/2008, -3/+19When you consider that police response is AFTER the crime has been committed you would understand Jacob3d's statement. They are a reactive force, not a proactive force as much as they'd like to say that they are.
I have no tolerance for police abuse. I hope the gentleman wins his case and the cops suffer a stinging blow because of it. I'm tired of living in a police state. - stealth45, on 01/04/2008, -3/+13There are good cops, there are bad cops, and there are stupid cops that don't realize that a taser is meant to be used as an alternative to lethal force (a taser should be used in situations a pistol might need to be). In most cases, well trained police make communities substantially safer.
- SeethisPass, on 01/04/2008, -1/+5Not any more. No ones life is safe if the police are on the scene.
- Hobbes24, on 01/04/2008, -21/+16usless until they, oh i don't know, try to stop criminals who are fleeing into your neighborhood?
i'm not saying what she did was ok, but i would be willing to forgive cops searching my yard for a dangerous criminal- blackrage, on 01/04/2008, -1/+19I don't know... When they start busting out the windows in my car... I might get pissed.
- dafragsta, on 01/04/2008, -8/+19For every real criminal the justice system incarcerates, I bet they abuse five productive members of society, at least. Cops are dirty and they become cops mostly for the power.
- morguth, on 01/04/2008, -7/+11For every real statistic statisticians create, I bet they fake five statistics, at least. Statisticians are dirty and they become statisticians mostly for the numbers.
- cawpin, on 01/04/2008, -8/+5You are a ***** moron, plain and simple.
- tyywebb, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Tough call...getting robbed or tasered.
- nicholai, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1The police will rob, taser and kidnap you.
- shovelihave, on 01/04/2008, -6/+5At least they perpetuate the donuts industry
- akapsycho, on 01/04/2008, -34/+8$20 says that this guy is a Ron Paul fanatic. You do know that cops do a lot of things besides taser people for youtube videos right?
- active1x0, on 01/04/2008, -14/+5the fact that all of you guys are getting dugg down speaks volumes about the type of people on this website.
pure class.- MindTrigger, on 01/04/2008, -8/+4you are welcome to ***** off to another site if you don't like it here.
- poiuytrewq44, on 01/04/2008, -3/+1Yea! If you don't liek our kuntree u can just git out!!!1
- dafragsta, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4Yeah, someone who is a bit impartial to cops abusing power would most certainly be a prime candidate to support Ron Paul.
- active1x0, on 01/04/2008, -14/+5the fact that all of you guys are getting dugg down speaks volumes about the type of people on this website.
- Beanstudd, on 01/04/2008, -32/+25"cops are useless" I passionately hate people with your level of ignorant stupidy
- kuantan97, on 01/04/2008, -7/+5"I passionately hate people with your level of ignorant stupidy"
How does thinking "cops are useless" qualify one as being stupid? - thinsoldier, on 01/04/2008, -3/+8Depending on where you live....cops can be TOTALLY useless.
The most decorated cop on the force can be a SUPERCOP in one part of town but wouldn't even stop for children on the crosswalk in another part of town. - Abomonog, on 01/04/2008, -2/+5Well think of it like this. Here in Virginia Beach cops were complaining that the police entrance was too difficult and the requirements had to be lowered (so more blacks could be allowed into the force no less. What does race have to do with the test?). Anyways a local radio station gave the test to a 10 year old black girl. She aced it. The 10 year old achieved a %100 rating on a police entrance exam that was widely considered too difficult by the police themselves. I think that any police force who's average officers intelligence is below that of a 5th graders is pretty ***** useless. And dangerous to the community to boot.
- kuantan97, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Sounds like some anger management might be in order.

- Qtip42, on 01/04/2008, -1/+34Lots of bad apples. They do serve a purpose though. Blame it on the low entry requirements into the field.
- cawpin, on 01/04/2008, -6/+3You've obviously never gone through the tryouts or training if you think there is a low requirement.
- moofer, on 01/04/2008, -1/+7They make sure you're reasonably physically fit to beat the ***** out of people with night sticks and tasers. That's for damn sure. Nobody ever refers to academic instruction as "tryouts" so I know that's what you meant. Cops are ***** uneducated ruffians that thrive on the power they hold over the citizens they think they're "protecting"
- chijim70, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3I know for a fact that if you have too high of an IQ you cannot become a police officer in most states.

- PATSCRU, on 01/04/2008, -7/+353When cops came to a birthday party in chino, CA, they insisted on entering the home because of a noise complaint. My brother had asked to see their warrant, and the cops became extremely miffed at the question and began verbally harrassing and threatening my brother. My brother asked for the badge number of one the officers. They were so offended that a citizen would ask for their badge numbers that they pushed their way into the house, told everyone to get out, closed all the blinds, then beat and tased my brother. To top it off, they arrested him for resisting arrest. I know it's an anecdotal story, but i couldn't make this ***** up. Sometimes we're helpless under abusive police. His lawyer believed his story because he'd heard reports of similar behavior from that police, but said that any action taken against the police would be expensive, time consuming, and futile.
- playaj20008, on 01/04/2008, -6/+78Well you have a crappy lawyer then. If your brothers story is true then any actions taken against the police would result in a settlement, so therefore is not expensive at all. It wouldn't be futile because the officers would be fired. And while it might be time consuming, it would be worth the money he would stand to make.
- MindTrigger, on 01/04/2008, -3/+17No, because its a case of some kid versus the "expert witness" police officers. There was no case against the police if they asked all the potential witnesses to leave and then beat his ass.
- jgtg32a, on 01/04/2008, -1/+9Well I was at the party and the cops told everyone to leave. I saw _____ later and he looked like he had the ***** kicked out of him.
Are you ***** serious MindTrigger? - MindTrigger, on 01/04/2008, -1/+13You misunderstood me. Cops in court are considered "expert witnesses" by the court. That is why you will almost always lose when it's your word against a cop's. Unless someone saw the police beat his ass, the lawyer had no case because the police can make up whatever story that want about resisting arrest and whatnot. It's *****, but that's how it goes down. The lawyer knew this.
- BleedingCello, on 01/04/2008, -0/+15I concure. Not many lawers will take a case against cops, no matter what you "think" is true. Try to file charges against a cop and see what happens. Even lawers know better. Seriously, its not a "police state" for nothing.
- JohnSteel, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Cops are trained on how to subdue people without using more force than needed. Getting beat up is a clear sign of excessive force.
http://smalltown.myminicity.com/ - Bakrain, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2All I know is next time I'm a juror and an "expert police witness" takes the stand, I'll remember this digg.

- jgtg32a, on 01/04/2008, -1/+9Well I was at the party and the cops told everyone to leave. I saw _____ later and he looked like he had the ***** kicked out of him.
- trickyt, on 01/04/2008, -3/+3What about his beaten ass? Fair to assume he didn't beat himself up?
- MindTrigger, on 01/04/2008, -0/+11How hard is it for the police to say he resisted or pulled some other ***** once the witnesses weren't around? They do that ***** all the time. His beaten ass is evidence that he got his ass beaten, but doesn't prove WHY it was beaten. The cops play the old "insert ***** story here" game in their police report.
- MindTrigger, on 01/04/2008, -3/+17No, because its a case of some kid versus the "expert witness" police officers. There was no case against the police if they asked all the potential witnesses to leave and then beat his ass.
- demonsnake69, on 01/04/2008, -6/+38It's too bad we don't have "eye for an eye" anymore. I'd rather beat up and taser the cops that did that to me instead of a lawsuit if I was in your brother's shoes -- that would feel like real justice.
- mdunn79, on 01/04/2008, -6/+3Revenge is not justice.
- Antixian, on 01/04/2008, -1/+7since when?

- mdunn79, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1You're all so brilliant.
Justice is not supposed to be based on emotion, hence why it requires a trial process, evidence, etc. Revenge is based on an emotional need for retribution, and as such is incompatible with the concept of "justice".
- mdunn79, on 01/04/2008, -6/+3Revenge is not justice.

- bitspace, on 01/04/2008, -3/+8Dude, that ***** makes me really sad, and angry, and frustrated. It doesn't take more than one or two abusive cops to make society think all cops are bad.
- B3000, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Not all cops are bad - just 80-85% of cops are bad.
- TDR25, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8I was going along the lines of 90%, but that doesn't mean your wrong by any means. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Cops feel they can shoot, tase, and abuse anybody they want, and who's going to stop them? The judges, lawyers, politicians...I think not. Time to wake up folks, this is officially a police state !
- B3000, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Not all cops are bad - just 80-85% of cops are bad.
- mlvassallo, on 01/04/2008, -7/+4Well... you could have made that story up...

- anti_hax0r, on 01/04/2008, -7/+2You don't need a warrant if you have probable cause. The public should take some criminal justice classes so they understand the law.
- TwoDeuces, on 01/04/2008, -3/+4Beating someone after asking all the witnesses to leave has nothing to do with probably cause. Shut the ***** up.
- moofer, on 01/04/2008, -4/+2probably cause - that ***** is funny right there.
- TwoDeuces, on 01/04/2008, -3/+4Beating someone after asking all the witnesses to leave has nothing to do with probably cause. Shut the ***** up.
- jmk4422, on 01/04/2008, -1/+15Since you can't provide any evidence to prove your story is true, I'm not going to come out and say I believe you. I will, however, say that I would NOT be surprised to find out it was true. I have experienced similar things with cops and don't know anyone who hasn't. Are all cops bad? Of course not. But the problem is that, as a society, we give these people a tremendous amount of power over us. We also give them rules as a condition for that power. That's why when the bad cops out there break the rules it should terrify the crap out of all of us so much. You don't have to be wearing a "tin-foil hat" to be afraid of cops like the ones in your story, or in this video. All reasonable Americans should be afraid of cops like these, and they must be punished when caught abusing their power, lest the ones sworn to protect and serve devolve into a paramilitary force that suppresses all rights and liberties in the name of law and order. Wow... sorry about that. /rant
- TwoDeuces, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3In my experience cops are only slightly higher up on the food chain than the people they protect the rest of us from.

- sensoukami, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6No doubt. but it's not a question of getting them, it's a question of creating a system of checks and balances and openness and accountability. Partisanship is part of the problem because noone wants to hold their own "side" to account. So the Democrats are corrupt and dishonest and the Republicans are even worse, and the bulk of voters won't stand up and call "BS", and the independents are too marginalized, and apathy sets in....not a good situation.
- ghamal, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Nah that's too much work. Let's just film every every encounter with a cop and upload it to liveleak so that all the abuses are documented and society is forced to deal with the issue.

- Corrosionx, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2You can't have that in a system where they have a monopoly on the use of force. If you can't hire a competing agency to protect you against them, they will eventually dominate you every single time.

are you all satisfied yet?- TheCaterpillar, on 01/04/2008, -4/+32Obviously you've never interacted with the police before. Not to say that all or even most police officers are assholes (I have met totally awesome police officers), they are diproportionally inclined to be assholes. This makes sense because people in power positions are likely to abuse their power (Exhibit A: The Stanford Prison Experiment). Before the now ubiquitous video camera there was virtually no way to hold police responsible for abusing their power, now there is.
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -9/+2oh wow so you read about one psychological experiment and now you generalize all police officers based on the results of that one (failed) experiment? police have authority over you. if you speak english and understand english, you can understand and comprehend the order they shout at you. dont stand around and say "but....but...but...." just ***** do what the cop says at the time and no one gets ***** tased. you can talk it over with whoever you want to later on (the officer, his boss, your lawyer, etc.) what part of obeying a direct command dont you assholes understand? the officer doesnt know if you are stalling in order to run, grab a gun, a piece of pipe, anything. so just ***** do what they say when they say it, dont get tased, and talk about it later, after you show the police officer that you are not high on meth, crack, do not plan to run, kill him, fight, etc and that you do understand basic english commands. simple and easy.
- poiuytrewq44, on 01/04/2008, -1/+5It failed because they had so gratuitously taken their roles as dominant and submissive causing lifelong emotional scarring for the prisoners after only half of the experiment was completed.
- TheCaterpillar, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Where did I say I was an *****. I try to be as polite as possible when speaking to cops, I'm not sure what kind of people you are dealing with who try to grab pipes to assault police officers. Perhaps you remember a video a little while back of a police officer threating to make up charges against a guy who drove into a parking lot at 2AM, it was on the news a lot and the cop got fired. The only question he asked was why he was being held, which is a right guaranteed in the US Constitution, Article 1 Section 9 (Habeas Corpus, maybe you've heard of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_corpus ), so I guess I will call that Exhibit B. I don't know many people who have video cameras in their cars, but the fact that this rather rare "citizen camera" managed to capture such an egregious abuse of police power leads one to believe that this sort of thing happens a lot more than one might expect. I guess you're the kind of person who will do anything that a cop (or someone posing as a cop) tells you to do. And with that I will leave you with Exhibit C: http://www.privateci.org/Oregon.htm

- gluon, on 01/04/2008, -7/+4I'm glad people like you exist. That is, dumb people. It's the reason I make lots of money and you probably don't.
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -8/+2yes, a whopping 150 bucks a week at mickey d's.......what you are really saying is that you have a bigger ***** than everyone else here........but no one cares.......buried....***** off.
- TwoDeuces, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4I think you're being dugg down because the majority of people actually have had absolutly henious interactions with retarded cops abusing their power. If that wasn't the case this article wouldn't make the front page.
- itsatrapadbar, on 01/04/2008, -4/+1lol well said
- Baroja1898, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1***** off. You're probably a pig yourself.
- TheCaterpillar, on 01/04/2008, -4/+32Obviously you've never interacted with the police before.
- TheCaterpillar, on 01/04/2008, -1/+45It is good that people now have a defense against ***** police, now that video recorders are everywhere police can now be held responsible for their actions.
- lazlonger, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2can...but aren't / won't be
- d0onut, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3But the cameras on the walls are weapons
- ghamal, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3People need to film every encounter with a cop and upload it to liveleak so that all the abuses (and even good deeds if any) are documented and society is forced to deal with the issue.
- perkoff, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Oh yeah, like that "Don't tase me bro" guy. I bet all the pigs that tased him for talking still have their easy jobs. What should happen is all cops should be fired. Not all, I mean you need a few, but right now the majority of cops are just glorified meter maids who think they can do whatever the ***** they want cause they do and get away with it. ***** the police.
- phenry50BMG, on 01/04/2008, -10/+35This tyranny will not stop until these thugs are dealt with accordingly. They have homes and families. The courts will not do a goddamn thing to help. Once night falls, use your imagination.
- MrESaulved, on 01/04/2008, -15/+2That's what they want, chaos and barbarism, don't fall for it good sir.
- Serphyas, on 01/04/2008, -2/+11Oh yeah, that makes sense; power-hungry cops want anarchy. Brilliant deduction, *****.
That's not what "they" want. "They" want absolute order at the expense of innocent civilians. A great deal of cops think that their badges and sidearms give them supreme authority.- MrESaulved, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1As if the police make the rules, as if the police train themselves, as if the police self appoint. Look higher than the bottom rung of the ladder to those who direct policy.
***** indeed! You prove my point for me, with unwarranted insult (barbarism) and attacking a confederate (chaos). Don't worry, you are forgiven. - Garbagio, on 01/04/2008, -2/+2You could have just ignored the insults and continued on with your rebuttal. By your standard, a haughty attitude proves Serphyas's point.
- MrESaulved, on 01/04/2008, -3/+1My comments still stand, regardless of who insults them, regardless of how they are interpreted, there are no subtle implications in them other than the words themselves.
The writer can't be responsible for every reader's mood, so you must read the words as written and leave your inferences in your own mind where they belong. - Garbagio, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1How can you use all encompassing terms such as chaos and barbarism without implying the intent of others' actions? If we leave all comments at face value then all we see are flapping lips.

- Sterango, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4fight fire with fire when theres no water.
- fuzzmeister, on 01/04/2008, -6/+5So, in order to prevent violence by them, you argue for violence against their families? That's rather sickening.
- Garbagio, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3You have to admit, a possible threat against something (not someone) personal would make you think twice about thuggery on this level. Cops really do have a get out of jail free card. I could be mistaken but the worst I've ever heard about these days is an officer being fired from the force; and these are in cases of premeditated negligence, not just a wrong decision.
- williamdyer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2I hope you are sickened, and that it turns into stomach cancer. Thug pigs should die exceptionally horrible deaths.

- OttawaMarcin, on 01/04/2008, -0/+23If anything, this incident has prompted everyone on Digg to buy a video camera and start filming cops.
- timewarp424, on 01/04/2008, -4/+2Um... no it really hasn't. I've seen plenty of worse videos of tasering (such as the man who died after being tased), and although concerned, I still have yet to buy a camera. I am not to the point of being irrationally afraid of cops (because it is irrational to assume all cops will do this no matter the situation). However, what it most likely has done for most diggers, is opened their eyes to the unchecked power of cops and empowered them to seek change. Taping cops will do nothing; changing the government or current social atmosphere to let the people have a larger control of cops will.
- jefjefjef, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4Taping cops offers evidence of a need for change though.

- nicholai, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1This law doesn't even make sense but I am not sure why people are burying you for reporting what is a fact in most states.
- jiggawhat, on 01/04/2008, -2/+0Incorrect. Most places it is illegal to audiotape somebody without EITHER party's knowledge. So a 3rd party listening in on your phone call without consent would be illegal, but YOU taping a call to somebody else generally is not.
This is the way it is in most states, YMMV.

you're a ***** idiot.- metaknite, on 01/04/2008, -8/+1Yep. I know all the cops in my small town. While they are all not my friends I do have a friendly relationship with two or three of them. - sensoukami, on 01/04/2008, -1/+8Wow, you're so worldy in you're tiny little hick town. Maybe the cops there are good folks, a lot of them are, but to blanket "support the police" when it is well documented that there are more than a few corrupt power-hungry pigs out there marks you as, to use the phrase, "a ***** idiot".
- poiuytrewq44, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2(Your results may vary)
I've lived in towns where the entire department were completely asinine, and those where they've been amazingly good. Or maybe you shouldn't like them because they do that to other people. Just sayin'.

- 33PercentGod, on 01/04/2008, -5/+98You know, for the longest time i've felt the cops have a bad reputation because of a few that get on TV for doing outrageous *****. My uncle is a cop here in my town and is a level headed good guy that'll usually let you off on a warning. My attitude changed dramatically because i've seen a new tazer video almost every week for 2 months straight where cops are abusing their power and doing whatever they feel like. In that I have to say,
***** the police (coming straight from the underground).- Beanstudd, on 01/04/2008, -23/+4this is one of the most perfect examples I've seen of how someone so stupidly ignorant can be blindly guided into believing prejudicial generalizations
- HappyEngineer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+23If a group is supposed to be self-regulating then it's perfectly valid to dislike a group based on the actions of 1% of that group. Sure, maybe only 1% are bad, but the other 99% are to blame for not kicking out the 1%.
The police deserve their bad reputation until the day when they start to actively prosecute officers who are in that 1%. I don't care if those officers are good most of the time. Civilians aren't allowed to occasionally break into the homes of others or tazer other people every now and then. The police need to be held to a higher standard of behavior than the average citizen. Right now it's the other way around. - johndi, on 01/04/2008, -0/+14Police supervisors are not just complacent when cops get out of line, they actively defend the thugs in uniform. That is what really bothers people. Most people would understand that there are going to be a few bad cops in every precinct if the system would rid itself of them when discovered. Instead they get an extra paid vacation while the sham investigation goes on. At one time police were highly respected, but times have changed. The police need to take the lead in cleaning up their house if they are going to regain the public trust.
- williamdyer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1It's more like 10 bad cops to every good one.

- sougly, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3That's a dumb comment.
- liquidpele, on 01/04/2008, -2/+2The problem is that it's non-lethal. If they *shot* the guy, they know they'd be *****, but a taser is non-lethal. It's too tempting for them to use it because to them it's not as big of a deal.
- d0onut, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Say that after you get tased. I imagine it's no fun experience.
- superdoofus, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3it's not "non-lethal" though. people have died from it's use upon their body (one instance is even enough here), therefore the phrase "non-lethal" is rendered wholly incorrect. a more apt descriptor might be "less-lethal" (as it pertains to the use of a sidearm), or "seldom-lethal".

- ryusen, on 01/12/2008, -0/+0Yep, pretty much. When it comes down to it the problem is lack of accountability. Cops are requires to fill out quite a bit of paperwork every time they use their guns.. same should be said for a Taser.

- lilmikey, on 01/04/2008, -2/+32Videos like this just turn my stomach - the 'War on Terror certainly has made me fearful - not of terrorists mind you, but of police officers who are on vendettas to FIND terrorists. I'm sure that nothing will come of this video either - the officers will get a slap on the wrist internally and I'm sure what will amount to a 'stern warning' against doing this in the future.

- poiuytrewq44, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2I'd have to say that all Buddhists are good people. (Sweeping generalization I know, but have you ever heard of a rogue orange-robed monk on the loose? I think not.)

- hddigger, on 01/04/2008, -1/+23Just another example of why/how citizens of this country are terrified of police. Even innocent people fear them, and most believe the police are not "on our side". ***** da police!
- mountainsurfer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+18Where is NWA when you need them... You know it's funny - this stuff has been going on a long time in low-income communities, but now middle-class white people are beginning to see how many cops really are due to the power of digital video and viral content distribution. This kind of stuff has caused dozens of riots in Cincinnati, where I used to live. Every time a young black guy goes to pull up his pants he's shot dead for "reaching for a gun". Another guy was tazed and then choked to death in Wallgreens for stealing a candybar or something like that. WTF?

(No, really. You only *wish* I were full of *****. Before digging me down, Google the search terms "IQ police". The first result will take you to a New York Times article about a police-force applicant who was denied an interview due to excess IQ.)- FadieZ, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1WTF. How the ***** was he dismissed? What reason could they possibly give to deny a police job for people with high IQs?
- poiuytrewq44, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4Because high IQ people would be less compliant with this *****.
- kcmedic, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1I think it has more to do with levels of moral reasoning. Here is a link to an interesting article about public safety vs health care. http://www.jems.com/news_and_articles/columns/Bled ...
It shows the different levels of moral reasoning. At level 2 (conventional morality), you are trying to do what everyone thinks is right and maintain law and order (where they want PD). At level 3 (post-conventional morality) you are thinking above that, about what is truly right and wrong. Laws may be wrong. They don't want PD at that level.- CamperBob, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Dugg up, that's indeed an interesting article for several reasons.
- FadieZ, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1WTF. How the ***** was he dismissed? What reason could they possibly give to deny a police job for people with high IQs?
- sdloveless, on 01/04/2008, -0/+18CamperBob is 100% right. Many police departments, especially in larger cities, do test IQ. Those who score too high are either disqualified or strongly discouraged. The "theory" is that a very intelligent police officer will be bored with the monotony of police work and either quit (no return on the training investment) or become inattentive (possibly causing harm unintentionally). In reality, dumb jocks are just easier for the powers-that-be to control.
- minimitable, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Exactly
- dasluvaluva, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5I recently spoke with an an ex-German soldier who escaped Berlin. He joined the American military to better his education and spoke very poorly of our military. In the States, they trained him to obey orders and not think beyond the instructions he was given.

- DannoSpeaks, on 01/04/2008, -9/+12The title/description of this thread is misleading. So often people think that a warrantless search is an illegal search. The cops were exercising their right of chasing a suspect in hot pursuit. The idea of "hot pursuit" allows officers to enter private property in search of suspects or when they suspect a crime has been committed on private property. The definitely shouldn't have tazed that man, but his video of police doing their work wouldn't have proved anything sinister until they tazed him.
- TheSwashbuckler, on 01/04/2008, -3/+7"or when they suspect a crime has been committed on private property."
Nope, that would be an ILLEGAL search. Mere suspicion ain't enough.- DannoSpeaks, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1I should have added that they do not need a warrant when they suspect a crime has been committed on private property and delay in moving onto the property would endanger others and lead to the perps escape.
Again, read up on hot puruit, a warrantless search is not an illegal search.
- DannoSpeaks, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1I should have added that they do not need a warrant when they suspect a crime has been committed on private property and delay in moving onto the property would endanger others and lead to the perps escape.
- kuantan97, on 01/04/2008, -1/+9Cops, as such, do not have "rights." They have only powers.
In "hot pursuit"? Apparently you missed the little tidbit that incited the citizens to tape the event: "Waterhouse says that the dog keyed on a car, prompting officers to break out a window which upset residents who maintain that no one ran onto the property. It was at that point that an angry resident grabbed a video camera and started to film the police search." Obviously, there was no one in the car, otherwise they would not have bothered with the fellow taping their little episode. And no "hot pursuit" ever justifies invasions of private property belonging to innocent bystanders. Do us a favor, and quit apologizing for the government.- DannoSpeaks, on 01/04/2008, -7/+2Actually i think it is you who missed something. The description even says they followed their dog, which they were using to chase the suspect, onto private property. Whether you like it or not, cops have a very difficult job to do, and getting a warrant to search any property while chasing a fleeing suspect is impossible. The dog led them to a car, how could you say there was obviously no one in the car. Last time I checked, my car doesn't have a window letting me see into my trunk. Why would a criminal hide behind a window? Any smart criminal knows that glass in clear and can be seen through, so any smart cop would think that if my dog, who is trained to chase suspects, points at a car, the logical place to search is the trunk. That is what they did. As for the property of innocent bystanders, if a criminal is chased onto your property you better believe the police can search your property without a warrant. Maybe you should read up on your rights and what powers the police have when doing their job. Read up on it, http://www.answers.com/topic/hot-pursuit?cat=biz-f ...
- Cy76, on 01/04/2008, -7/+1Thank you Danno for being a voice of reason in the mob mentality that swept this comment section. Yeah, they possibly could have been a little slower in their use of force, but the guy was being a belligerent and uncooperative jerk. He says no one came on the property, but maybe the person running was a relative of his that ran there looking for someplace to hide? The police don't know him or if what he is saying is the truth or a lie. Coming on the property when chasing a suspect is perfectly legitimate. You see this in films all the time. No one argues then.
Best thing to do in a high-tension situation like this is just to cooperate with the police requests. If he's not done anything wrong, after they ascertain that fact, he's free to go. We do NOT live in a police state. Talk to someone who's come to America from a place in the world that IS a police state. Our police have a very tough job, and have to make split-second decisions in extremely tense situations. They don't have the luxury of being able to critique their actions in the comfort of their living rooms.
What gets me the most is the appalling lack of intelligence so pervasive in this thread, and in the "public's" general sentiment. The vocal few make up for what they lack in intelligence and common sense with loudness and vulgarity. This nation is going downhill, but not for the reasons we see on the news.
Anyway, just a thanks Danno - wanted to give you props - finally created an account on here to do so. - superdoofus, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3and their reason for tasing the man is set forth from your sop description how, exactly? he was told to stop taping/"put it down", didn't comply, and that resulted in the employment of "less-lethal" methods. a taser is brute force and only less lethal than a sidearm. the trend of the matter is that taser usage is a form of abusive force and is used with far too little discretion. your assertion that "split-second decision making" may somehow cloud or even justify scenarios such as this or others similar speaks directly to either incomplete or flawed training, incompetence of the officers involved, or derelict behavior of the pursuing officers. the fault of any of these is the fault of the police department and its representatives.
- mesasone, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1If the suspect is in the trunk, he's not ***** going anywhere. No need to break out windows when you could have an officer wait outside for a locksmith to come and open the trunk, or find the owner.

- minimitable, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Which begs the question; what happened to this dangerous suspect? If what he did warranted 'hot pursuit' why did the priority suddenly become tasing this man? I call *****.

- Frostman3D, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2You can't digg down the truth.
- superdoofus, on 01/04/2008, -2/+4the majority of police in training are healthy adult males, not diabetics or old women or physically handicapped or who the hell else has been at the sharp end of the device. police in training brace for the hit, are expecting it, and are not hit repeatedly over the course of a minute or two. the major difference between riding at the academy and employing the device on a citizen of this country is what's referred to as a "controlled environment", and procedural vs. speculative usage. the concerns in either situation are wholly different: at the academy it's to familiarize the user with the capabilities and effect with a major emphasis on safe usage at that time (it would be really bad press if a cadet died during training from a taser...oh wait...that's happened already...), in the course of duty it's just to subdue and force the compliance of someone, and safety becomes secondary to that. those two scenarios are worlds apart.
