laist.com — In Orange County, CA, a nearly empty theater Sunday night became a crime scene when two men watching the Sundance raved-about gruesome horror movie, The Signal, got stabbed by another man who fled through the back doors.

- RuffRidr, on 02/27/2008, -22/+120How many stabbings need to happen before we can get some common sense knife laws? These assault knives have to be banned now. I also want to see a 30 day waiting period on all cutlery. Finally we must close the "kitchen department" loophole. Its for the children. Thank you.
- yohnstoppable, on 02/27/2008, -12/+5Such laws would have severe repercussions for the *buy a cutco set, show it to 5 friends, then give up on it* market. Speaking of which, I haven't had some douchebag show me how they can cut through a penny in forever. Must be a college thing, I guess.
- iidestined, on 02/27/2008, -13/+2werd! We need stronger seatbelt and helmet laws too.
- moofer, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3Now how much would you pay... But wait! There's more!

- RuffRidr, on 02/27/2008, -0/+9Under my 1 knife a month plan, you would have to wait 50 months to build up such an arsenal.
- CedEx, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0Does that plan cost $0.01 for the first 43 knives, while the remaining 7 at regular price?
- nicktripp, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I ordered my set for two easy payments and one really hard payment.

- Rahodeb, on 02/27/2008, -0/+8You can have my knives when you pry them from my cold, dead hands. Besides, I use my super-auto knife thrower 9000 to carve the thanksgiving turkey...and keep the government at bay...
- Sornos, on 02/27/2008, -14/+5I see that you're trying to compare this to gun control, but it is a bad analogy. Hand guns have the sole and exclusive purpose of killing other human beings. Knives are made to cut things in general.
- Silentnite85, on 02/27/2008, -2/+34For the record I own a gun. And I use it to do things other then shoot people. I use it to open pop cans, soup cans. Start the TV. Keep the remote out of friends hands. Untie my shoes. Open the window.
Lots of uses other then just shooting people. Think outside the box. - mrgreg, on 02/27/2008, -1/+9So you're telling me that people that use handguns in competition shooting are using them wrong? Clearly, they're not killing anyone, so they must not be using them for their "intended purpose." Idiot.
- DuckofDeath11, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3My father has a hand gun that he takes out when he goes fishing and bow hunting. It's for shooting wolves or bears if he gets attacked. But yeah, sometimes he just shoots people. I mean, that's the sole purpose of hand guns, right?
- Silentnite85, on 02/27/2008, -2/+34For the record I own a gun. And I use it to do things other then shoot people. I use it to open pop cans, soup cans. Start the TV. Keep the remote out of friends hands. Untie my shoes. Open the window.
- Antialias, on 02/27/2008, -8/+11If someone in the audience had a knife, they could have prevented this horrible crime.
/sarcasm
The gun people always make the argument that if everybody had guns, these sorts of things wouldn't happen. The fact is that unless you've got the gun in a holster or in your hand, 5 or 6 people would be dead before you could do anything anyway. And often the killer has killed themselves before anybody realizes what is going on anyway.- slvrbullet87, on 02/27/2008, -7/+4In reguards to your statement of having guns wouldnt stop any shootings, i want you to tell me truthfully one thing. At any of these school shootings, would having the teachers and students armed change the odds for the worse or the better?

Looks like in these cases it definitely changed the odds for the better.- bitterbug, on 02/27/2008, -2/+3From the first article it appears the shooter set down his weapon when he ran out of ammo. So that one is irrelevant.
- RuffRidr, on 02/27/2008, -2/+3Whether he had more ammo or not, the students with their own personal firearms were ready to neutralize the threat. So no, it is not irrelevant.

- RuffRidr, on 02/27/2008, -4/+6Well, if 5 or 6 people are going to be dead anyway, we might as well let him go on and kill 20 or 30. Is that your logic?
- crweaks23, on 02/27/2008, -3/+3Have you ever seen a fist fight? How do they start? You're telling me that a network of armed kids wouldn't be in a deadly situation if they all had guns? Or are you going to try and say that fights will magically disappear?
Basically what you're saying is that we should make our everyday lives more dangerous because you believe (which can be debated) that it would help to prevent infrequent school shootings. So... in a nutshell... lets create MORE shootings, and just make sure they involve less people per shooting. AWESOME IDEA!! - RuffRidr, on 02/27/2008, -2/+4People with concealed carry permits are around right now in all kinds of places that you frequent. So by your logic, MORE shootings by concealed weapons permit holders should be happening right now. Please refer me to some of these news reports! Bonus points if you can provide one where innocent bystanders were caught in the CCW holders crossfire.
- drgmdp, on 02/27/2008, -3/+3well, there has been like 4 or 5 mass shootings in the last few months... statistics don't help you...
- bentman78, on 02/27/2008, -2/+2By criminals or lawful gun owners? Stats do help him.
Also interpol clearly states even if gun crime was taken out of the equation, we still have the highest crime rate, rape, assaults...so on of any industrialized nation.
I own a gun, I haven't unlawfully killed anyone, neither has anyone else I know that owns a gun...
- crweaks23, on 02/27/2008, -3/+3Have you ever seen a fist fight? How do they start? You're telling me that a network of armed kids wouldn't be in a deadly situation if they all had guns? Or are you going to try and say that fights will magically disappear?
- WhereAmI, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3I'm not making that argument. I want gun control. In the form where the responsible people get it.
If you don't want a gun thats fine, stop trying to take my guns away. - OriginalLucid1, on 02/28/2008, -1/+3One thing id for sure, if I have a side arm, no one is going to stab me without suffering serious consequences.
- slvrbullet87, on 02/27/2008, -7/+4In reguards to your statement of having guns wouldnt stop any shootings, i want you to tell me truthfully one thing. At any of these school shootings, would having the teachers and students armed change the odds for the worse or the better?
- Gerfervonbob, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5I don't think more legislation and government control is the answer, If someone really wants a knife they will get one.

- CrazedLeper, on 02/27/2008, -2/+1Where did you think all the rapes and school shootings were coming from? If you wanted the producers of a movie to show your product logo, wouldn't they charge you money? Ask why and they'll say "because if we show your product--even in a fictional setting--people will buy it when they see it in reality". How is that not true for the rest of the movie's content? How could they not know that? They know, that's the way they want it.

"A horror film told in three parts from three perspectives, in which a mysterious transmission which invades every cell phone, radio and TV, turning people into killers."
Looks like that transmission somehow invaded that movie screening. - moxillaq, on 02/27/2008, -1/+39Wasn't that the opening of Scream 2?
- Spuds2600, on 02/27/2008, -2/+4I think that's the plot to a Stephen King book...seriously... He wrote something very very much like that.
Okay... I looked it up... the book is called CELL. And it is a LOT like the movie... except it's only cell phones.

- afJoel105, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0You know, I always thought of the possibility of what happened in Scream 2 (black lady getting stabbed in a theater) guess people really are sick in the head for that to happen.
- mysteryhead, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Yeah... so this stabber must have just watched it... I think we should start a movement to get the opening of Scream 2 changed to a different scene, possible one involving math.

I'd much rather buy the DVD and risk not getting stabbed thank you very much... And I dont have a movie theater in my house.
- Zombi, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Well I don't know about you man. But having a strong interest in appreciating film, I have to see some of them in the theater. I can forgo the people that talk in there (usually doesn't happen with me) because I'm there for the experience that I can't get on my TV. Huge screen, tons of speakers, comfortable chairs. Maybe you're going to the budget theaters?

How to make a scary movie scarier?
"Hey, did you know two guys got stabbed watching this movie?" *looks over shoulder every 5 minutes for the rest of the film. - urbandistrict, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3Well, it would have totally been inappropriate if it was during a romantic comedy.

"Well, imagine watching this scary movie in a near empty theater....Then imagine, possibly during a stabbing scene (it's a pretty intense horror movie, so the odds are there), that you are getting stabbed yourself. Yeah, that happened to two men in separate parts of the theater when another patron yielded a knife."
