- lemur, on 10/03/2009, -30/+160I'm Shia. Shias have nothing against Jews, and Judaism is an honored part of Iran with a long history. Jewish history in Iran is even longer than Jewish history in Israel. Ahmadinejad does not "feel vulnerable in a radical Shia society." He is Shia himself. Iran is not without its radical politics, but I don't see the rationale in confusing radical politics with religious identity. The article is suggesting that Iran's radical politics is a natural result of Shiaism, which must be inherently radical, but this is nothing more than xenophobia and racism. Iran's politics is radical because the country suffered decades of oppression under European powers followed by US-backed coup, totalitarian dictatorship, and warfare. The fact that Western powers have tirelessly sought to destroy and impoverish Iran for almost a century might have something to do with radicalism. Right now the biggest threat to Iran's security as a nation is Israel, also sponsored by the US. Iran is a struggling nation and won't become less radical until it becomes more secure.
Ahmadinejad makes statements against the Israeli regime because of its threat to Iran as well as its oppression, immorality, and crimes against humanity. That's not to say that Iran doesn't commit its own humanitarian crimes, but it's easier to point fingers than be self-critical (the same goes for us Americans too). I don't believe there is any government on Earth that isn't oppressive in some way. The Israeli government is NOT "Jewish," but its political platform is to confuse Judaism the religion with their political goals in order to rally support from religious people abroad such as American Christians.
The whole story that "Ahmadinejad hates Israel because Muslims hate Jews" is nothing more than a fantasy. That explanation plays well here in the US because it fits neatly with the biases and misconceptions of the average American, who will say "oh that makes sense... I always heard Muslims are evil and hateful, especially toward other religions"; it is an argument that is cleverly designed to be accepted without question.
Here is a lecture by a famed Shia lecturer on the subject: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fGDbOozrKQ - inactive, on 10/03/2009, -16/+112"By making anti-Israeli statements he is trying to shed any suspicions about his Jewish connections. He feels vulnerable in a radical Shia society."
I'm skeptical of this revelation. Anytime someone is critical of another group people will speculate the person is just trying to shed suspicion about their own hidden roots.
A couple years ago, right after DNA pioneer James Watson commented that Africans' measurably lower IQ scores were caused by genetics and explainable by geographical separation and evolution, there were articles claiming Watson was 16% African and likely had a black great-grandparent. - digitalArtform, on 10/03/2009, -16/+107Is he anti-Jewish?
I think he's anti-Israel. - ajsmth, on 10/03/2009, -4/+90But can he play Crysis?

- gobbleplex, on 10/03/2009, -9/+43Hmmm... but there *are* an awful lot of anti-gay closet case republicans who *do* in fact crank up the vitriol in no small part to hide their own 'shameful' identity. It's hard to accept that the scenario presented is 100% out of the question in this instance.
- inactive, on 10/03/2009, -4/+33jews realize they hate themselves?
- digitalArtform, on 10/03/2009, -3/+32I always heard him basically say the Palestinians had nothing to do with the Holocaust. Why didn't you carve Israel out of a defeated Germany?
- BabyWookie, on 10/03/2009, -12/+40So? He never had anything against Jews and there are other Jews in the Iranian government. He is just anti-zionist, which doesn't make you anti-semitic.
- keloyd, on 10/03/2009, -4/+311. Hitler's paternal grandmother (?) was a scullery maid (the lowest in the female, indoor servants' heirarchy) at a wealthy Jewish household...then she got pregnant without a husband. The baby-daddy was very likely Jewish, and Hitler had the whole family's lands, records, etc. obliterated.
2. Back when it mattered, a dozen presidents, ending in Harding, were rumored to have distant Black ancestry. Harding was sort of a good old boy, like Clinton, and made a big joke about it, the best defense when it is a bit more likely than with others.
Those who study history are doomed to watch it repeat. Whether you study it or not, it always repeats, it's circles within circles and "turtles all the way down". - CaptainCool53, on 10/03/2009, -5/+30Where does calling the holocaust a myth fall into all of that?
"They have created a myth today that they call the massacre of Jews..."

- midnightliberty, on 10/03/2009, -12/+32Ahmadinejad is not anti-Jewish. He is anti-Israel, he is against the meddling in the Middle East that Israel and its sponsor, the United States, take part in.
http://www.antiwar.com/orig/norouzi.php?articleid= ...
The Iranian gov't. may be repressive, but so are many other governments around the world, including those of Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, China, the United States, Uzbekistan, and probably two dozen others. Most of the stuff about Iran coming from the mainstream media now is just propaganda designed to build support for inhuman sanctions and even potential war on Iran.
By the way, Iran FOLLOWS international law regarding nuclear energy while Israel does not:
http://news.antiwar.com/2009/10/02/obama-reaffirms ... - shillabus, on 10/03/2009, -0/+20It's new to me.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/03/2009, -20/+40Has he actually said anything really antisemitic, though?
Yeah, he called for the removal of the Israeli government, and yeah, he denies the holocaust, but unlike the crap e.g. Hamas spews everything I've heard from Ahmadinejad has been directed at the Israeli STATE, not jews in general.
Also I think everyone should realize that Ahmadinejad is a sockpuppet without any power at all; his words matter only to the degree that they reflect the opinions of his puppetteer, Khamenei. - Foochan, on 10/03/2009, -11/+30As I understand the situation, Ahmadinejad is anti-Zionist, not (overtly) anti-Jew. It's my understanding that Iran has quite a large Jewish minority.
Hate the guy myself, he's bonkers, but we should stick to the facts, shouldn't we? - saady87, on 10/03/2009, -0/+18Well, I dont know him, nor do I keep up with all this ***** that goes around him,
but from what I have herd, He has no problems with jews but just the Jewish state of Israel?
But ya, this Kinda Reminds of Dave Chapelle skit of the Blind Black White Supremacist. - getoffmybridge, on 10/03/2009, -0/+18Why didn't somebody tell me my ass was so big?!
- webandgraphics, on 10/03/2009, -9/+27Yup. See the pattern yet?
- Gndoab, on 10/03/2009, -9/+26Meh. He has never said he hates jews, he hates israeli's, and zionists. one can be a jew without being a zionist. Iran (like most countries in that area of the world) has a sizable jewish (the second largest after israel, according to wikipedia). so even if he is jewish, it's not some huge shocking factor.
- zaferk, on 10/03/2009, -2/+17Its a vicious cycle.
- MWeather, on 10/03/2009, -15/+30"How is the denial of the Holocaust not be considered as "directed at Jews in general"?"
Perhaps because they were just one of many undesirable groups that were exterminated. They're the largest single group, but most of those who died in the holocaust were not Jewish. - shadowmanjack, on 10/03/2009, -10/+24You're right. Denying the Holocaust ever happened does.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/03/2009, -5/+19His denial of the holocaust stems from his belief that it was the motivation for the creation of Israel. No holocaust, no grounds for Israel.
That's a different motivation than that of e.g. nazi holocaust deniers whose motivation is to whitewash the nazis. - mm63, on 10/03/2009, -3/+17Right now he is the reason for the crisis going on in Iran
- DarkInsight, on 10/03/2009, -12/+26How is the denial of the Holocaust not be considered as "directed at Jews in general"?
- chochazel, on 10/03/2009, -5/+18If you're denying the holocaust you're about as anti-jew as it's possible to be without enacting the holocaust.
- inactive, on 10/03/2009, -3/+16Who knows what he really thinks but the fact is it is the old "play the Jew conspiracy card" trick that has been overused for 50 years in the Arab world and he is now using it in Iran as well. Much easier to distract your people from your own corruption and despotism by saying "hey look over at the Zionist entity, they are persecuting our Palestinian brothers!"
- SkinnerBox, on 10/03/2009, -0/+13Jesus was a Jew too but you still have to be catholic to be the Pope.
- Mujokan, on 10/03/2009, -0/+13I didn't say it was antisemitism to criticize Israel.
How do you even know from what I wrote where I stand on Israel/Palestine? - Bic823, on 10/03/2009, -0/+12dugg for Jewism
- Akufen, on 10/03/2009, -0/+12If you are anti-"insert people here", then it doesn't really matter what the second part of your question is imo. You need to be very twisted to apply whatever reason is behind your ideas to an entire people. That is extremely short sighted, and if you ask me, just racist.
- jcsoc, on 10/04/2009, -1/+12tell that to the zionists
