Louvre to get new "Arts of Islam" gallery

This gallery "will be the chance for all French and foreign visitors to the Louvre to see that Islam is progress, science, refinement, modernity, and that fanaticism in the name of Islam is to flout Islam," Sarkozy said.

In the meantime - Why would Muslims be interested in having their art included along with Western art? Why wouldn't they establish their own museum? There's got to be something behind this, a reason for getting their foot in the Louvre door, other than philanthropic impulses.

And how long do you think it will be before the major-donor-of-the-project Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal & Friends threaten to withdraw their major $upport unless the Louvre "respects" their major demands to withdraw major art that includes major nudity? Michaelangelo's David, for instance.

- Argentian, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6The Prince is already deep into his pockets on providing funding for a number of projects in the West, all of which create levers on which to influence the art and society which the art is about. Also, for much more pedestrian things like Engineering and infrastructure - not as sexy as art but still very influential.
  
  His demands to have the benefactors kowtow to his demands to establish Sharia law and Islamic sensibilities is ongoing.
  
  Likewise, Muslims are getting a stronger and stronger foothold in our society. At work there are a large number of engineers. Three of the five top engineers (as in management positions) at this public agency are Muslim, and since being in charge, have added almost 5% of the workforce who also are Muslim.

monsieurginger, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1I have no problem with a louvre gallery about the arts of islam. I was at the louvre two weeks ago and really wished it, that specific gallery, was open then. I'm interested about how it even looks like compared to christian art which has a completely different view on drawing central figures of their respective bibles. There are a zillion depictions of jesus in cathedrals and i think it is against islamic belief to depict mohammed in art.

platypibri, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Islamic art, like Judaic art BTW, is generally, (not exclusively) non-representational, consisting largely of ornate, complex patterns and text, usually scripture. I find the script of the region to be especially fluid and beautiful, showing a calligraphic mastery on the level of the Eastern Asian scripts like Mandarin and Japanese.

Europe has produced a lot of ugly culture in addition to it's beautiful art. In this respect they are no different than Islam. And remember, a good deal of Europe rolled over for Hitler too.
