Lion Attack photographed
news.com.au — This lion pounced on Kate Drew from behind and dragged her to the ground, sinking its teeth into the back of her neck... as two more came to dine.

- brivapor, on 03/09/2008, -0/+5I wonder what kind of insurance(if any) the game park has for stuff like this
That would be an easy 500 grand if they were covered well- 11oops, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1One would have to assume the visitors were made to sign a thorough release waiver. But then again, this isn't America where everyone is afraid of being sued and where the first thing one thinks of after an experience like this is filing a lawsuit.
- LeeJunFan, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah, it's funny. In some countries - stupid people are actually left to pay the price for their own stupidity instead of suing someone. Whether in a park or not, people need to realize there is a risk in their own actions, it's not the park's fault that predators prey on weaker animals, nor that in spite of that fact this lady decided to not only wander into their territory, but paid good money to do so. Then was surprised when predators did what they normally do.
I'm not saying I don't feel bad for the lady, but she took the risk. Walking among predators is a dangerous pastime, and who do you sue when you fall off the mountain you decided to climb?
- mundus, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1I can has gurl?
- dariendynamite, on 03/10/2008, -0/+0Damn, she's 'girl next door' hot.
- shrewduser, on 03/09/2008, -6/+20Super Cute!
- SaveAnimals, on 03/09/2008, -10/+191That girl is sooo lucky to be alive, but please dont blame/kill the lion. The girl was silly to be in that situation and the lion was just doing whate comes naturaly.
- friendlyman, on 03/09/2008, -45/+13Yeah right on! Also I wish people would get off 'my' case about masturbating in public as hot chicks walk by. I'm only doing whate comes naturaly.
- ace429k, on 03/09/2008, -2/+2i believe wanking in public and a lion being its self is totally different. But then again, youre prolly very hairy and sex starved just like the lion. please continue youre destructive behavior in public. no really! we enjoy it!
- SAOSiN, on 03/09/2008, -0/+5If thats what comes natural, then all humans do it, not just 1...
- Awspire, on 03/09/2008, -1/+8Unlike the Lion, you have cognitive thought in which you can practice self restraint.
- CCoe, on 03/09/2008, -1/+3I hate this stupid argument, whether it is presented tongue in cheek or otherwise. Civilisation, and civilised behaviour, IS natural for human beings. We have NATURALLY evolved the capacity for this. Masturbating in public when you see a hot chick is NOT NATURAL. In fact, you'd probably be jailed.
- Sparkster185, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2whate the ***** are you thinking?
- aMammoth, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2***** you. Kill the animal.
- CCoe, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Woman walks into wild lion pack, gets mauled. WHO'S ***** FAULT IS THAT?! Lions eat meat. YOU = MEAT
- xtraa, on 03/09/2008, -4/+12Of cpurse not, it is her fault.!
If she is so dumb to play with wild animals she has tho take the consequences.
Its dead simple. - chrisclmsn, on 03/09/2008, -2/+26How could you side with that EVIL Lion!?
- kidcodea, on 03/09/2008, -14/+3do people like you really exist?
- Blandyman, on 03/09/2008, -1/+19Yes, as do people like you that can't notice sarcasm!
- KaneDragon, on 03/09/2008, -2/+1No, Blandyman, you are the people who can't notice sarcasm
I kid. - kidcodea, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1you sure? ;)
- KaneDragon, on 03/09/2008, -2/+1No, Blandyman, you are the people who can't notice sarcasm
- Blandyman, on 03/09/2008, -1/+19Yes, as do people like you that can't notice sarcasm!
- NanoStuff, on 03/09/2008, -1/+5If you ever tried touching a cat on the neck while lying belly up you may know this to be true. They'll rip your hand to shreds then panic and run because they know they've done something wrong. Some resist the urge, but others will tear first, worry about what they're tearing later. Try it with a roll of toilet paper.
She didn't piss the lion off, the lion just wanted to bite into something at that very moment.- rhyss, on 03/09/2008, -8/+1Yeah, here's more biting at the moment. http://x.cursedsanctuary.com/
- Mattyandco, on 03/09/2008, -1/+4The links a Ric, don't be fooled fool!
- kidcodea, on 03/09/2008, -14/+3do people like you really exist?
- drizzlelicious, on 03/09/2008, -16/+8Now if we said the same thing about rapists...
- norman619, on 03/09/2008, -4/+10Raping someone is natural? STFU plz.
- jj101, on 03/09/2008, -2/+2This is a silly argument. Everything is natural - what else could it be - supernatural? BTW Dolphins rape each other, people clearly do and almost certainly always have. The questions is whether it is acceptable and that is determined by society. In most human societies rape is unacceptable. I'm willing to bet that in lion societies, jumping on the silly standing up monkeys and biting them is fair game.
- drizzlelicious, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2I just think that its funny that the argument also works so well to defend rapists
- norman619, on 03/09/2008, -4/+10Raping someone is natural? STFU plz.
- ledmonkey, on 03/09/2008, -4/+5So are you saying if this lion had a death grip om that lady, and the only way to get it off was kill it, then we should just let her die?
- SpoonerMcgavin, on 03/09/2008, -2/+9yes ... don't interfere with darwin
- Retnuh730, on 03/09/2008, -2/+3Darwinism created us, its natural selection when that lion gets a bullet to the face. Survival of the fittest indeed.
- jj101, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4@retnuh. Survival of the fittest still applies. Here the selection pressure is lions that don't jump on silly blond tourists have a better chance of breeding.
- frappe987, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Perhaps its the lions helping to thin out the idiots of our own herd, thus not breeding further idiots.
- SpoonerMcgavin, on 03/09/2008, -2/+9yes ... don't interfere with darwin
- ophello, on 03/09/2008, -0/+7you idiots need to learn to spell
- Managua8Green, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1so...... we don't kill the lion?
- oOoNyquiloOo, on 03/09/2008, -0/+3whate, spelling whate is that?
- mllawso, on 03/09/2008, -0/+5But she came withing millimeters of death! That's like 7/50ths of an inch!
- ilikefun, on 03/09/2008, -2/+1British teacher Kate Drew's African safari experience went from posing with lions to fighting for her life.
- TnTBass, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2The lion was obviously confused. She spent way too much time in close quarters with them, they probably thought she wanted to get eaten.
I was rooting for the lion. I think a person needs to get eaten once in a while to remind people that these animals are not pets, should not be held captive, and are just doing what comes naturally. - ClevelandBrown, on 03/09/2008, -0/+0what + ate = whate?
- metalgel, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1that lion went lion!
- friendlyman, on 03/09/2008, -45/+13Yeah right on! Also I wish people would get off 'my' case about masturbating in public as hot chicks walk by. I'm only doing whate comes naturaly.
- robbinzo, on 03/09/2008, -8/+157Lions are wild animals! WTF are these idiots doing letting tourists wander around near them????
- Premier, on 03/09/2008, -2/+22No, no, you see they were perfectly safe, they had a Land Rover
- ChileanGoD, on 03/09/2008, -0/+38Sure. From the lion's perspective, wondering arround these wierdos often, you will have to wonder at some point what do they taste like.
- elint6, on 03/09/2008, -2/+9Didn't you RTFA? The lion was "playing" with her.
- phenolholic, on 03/09/2008, -0/+7they/re collecting $50.
- laserman92027, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2Actually $20 is enough. We did a similar encounter with a pair of leopards. They were each gnawing on the leg of a some dead animal when we were petting them. It does cost more to do a elephant back safari. Lions have been known to jump out of trees and get ya there. Always keep your head up!
- jj101, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2Cant argue with logic like that!
- Sparkster185, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2I thought it was $200?
- Qumahlin, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4These also aren't you typical "wild" lion. These are lions who have pretty much been bred and raised by humans, they are use to interaction with humans and no matter what animal you have, they all snap sometimes if something tickles their fancy. Do you know how many dogs in the US "randomly" attack someone and cause just as serious injuries?
- Stonekeeper, on 03/09/2008, -2/+65Dugg for the last picture. Awesome.

Aye! - docsavatchniya, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2i thought #3, with the now-onlookers reactions, was also a telling photo...#3 and #9 best out of the series...
- Sawta, on 03/09/2008, -2/+1 Really? That's the same reason why I buried it.
- lithera, on 03/09/2008, -2/+1Of course she has a cool pose at the camera, she's on a holiday, get's a attacked by a lion and survives..
Off camera she does what any other human being would do, wet yourself and thank God you're still breathing. But the internet doesn't need to know that ;-) - SaveAnimals, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Thew URL you have spammed is obviously the wrong one.
It should be : http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/gallery/0,22 ... - Ragecloak, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1i'd bite it

- EwMo, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2Hey, it's what I would do... I don't think I'd personally want to get into the tangle with the lion, especially when there are rangers around.
- Jarkeler, on 03/09/2008, -2/+0Some friend YOU are.
- jj101, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2If someone stood there and took a photo of that shot happening to me I would be furious. At least shout at the thing or something. People holding cameras seem to think they are excused from reacting to situations. If I survived I'd beat them with their camera and see if they react to that.
- Gamer2k4, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't want to be the photographer. All you can say is, "I didn't try to help or even get help...I just took pictures of it."

- Ataxia2008, on 03/09/2008, -1/+36Why we pictures still being taken when the lion had it's mouth round her head!?
I keep envisioning an Austin-Powers like photoshoot...- jftitan, on 03/09/2008, -0/+8photographer "Yes, YES, great pose, now let the lion eat your head.... YES GREAT Pose!..."
"Ok someone get the lion off her now.... pleeeaaassseee...." - sgtbutterscotch, on 03/09/2008, -0/+3Probably because the photographer knew he didn't know how to rescue the woman, but he knew the people they were with knew how and also probably thought it was best to get out of their way so he might as well be doing something useful ( though the usefulness of taking a picture could be debated I suppose)
- jawnboy, on 03/09/2008, -0/+12Dumb tourist: "Hey predator! Look at me I am made of meat!"
Lion: Om nom nom nom
Photog: Click, click, snap, click

- jdeuel, on 03/09/2008, -9/+1so glad you people make it obvious who to block
- superrad, on 03/09/2008, -14/+9Thank god the photographer stood there to took pictures to share with everyone on the net instead of helping out his friend.
- Lilitou, on 03/09/2008, -0/+21The article does say that it was seconds before the wardens were there to help. And also, exactly what was the photographer supposed to do?
- martalli, on 03/09/2008, -4/+9Throw something at the lion. Hey, he had a camera in his hand.
- LJRod82, on 03/09/2008, -6/+2Exactly. Come Lilitou, he could've thrown a rock, his keys, the ***** camera! Seriously. There have been stories like this before without pictures. Why? Cause the photographer decided to respond like a human and help the victim out. Tell me you would just snap pictures if it was a loved one or a close friend being attacked by a friggin lion.
- fightforyou, on 03/09/2008, -2/+5well, it probably wasn't a loved one. That's what photographers do, idiot. They snap pictures, no matter how bad the situation is. I'm sure the photographer would've helped if he was the only one there. But there was like, 10 people there. Get over it.
- LJRod82, on 03/09/2008, -7/+2Loved ones and friends were an example moron, read first before declaring idiot.
- fightforyou, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2Yeah, but that's not the point of your argument. Photographers doing nothing in this type of situation is your point. Not whether it's a loved one or not.
- caketank, on 03/09/2008, -0/+11That lion was probably just standing around when the photographer started pressing the shutter button, but already snacking on her head by the time he released it. They're pretty quick.
- OhhWell, on 03/09/2008, -1/+11Yeah sure. I'm certain you would have rushed in and punched the lion in the face too right? After pushing the wardens, who were already responding, out of the way of course... moron
- sabach, on 03/09/2008, -0/+11Rule of thumb is...if there are trained professionals present stay out of their way.
- Qumahlin, on 03/09/2008, -0/+6"these photographs of the attack, taken by a fellow traveller" Where do you see "friend" anywhere in that statement...No offense, if I see a stranger being attacked by a lion, and all I have is a camera...your ***** out of luck unless the lion runs away when its afraid i'll take pictures of its bad side.
- rhyss, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1These sanctuary walk abouts are just a bad idea as is demonstrated by this site: http://x.cursedsanctuary.com/

Looks like my judgement was sound: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/02/26/shark.bite.fa ... - *might* be okay, but first one would want to do one's own research on whether the species being "swum with" is one of the ones that sane intelligent people say are or are not safe to actually swim with. Also she was a teacher? Did this happen in from of a bunch of cheering kids? - RockMuncher, on 03/09/2008, -1/+30According to the article, the lion just wanted to 'play' with her. With it's teeth. Sort of like when my macaw wants to 'play' with me by slowly crushing my hand in a passive aggressive fit, then laughing at me when I flinch.
Wild animals should never, ever be trusted around people (unless in control of a handler) who are not trained to deal with them. They're usually predictable in behavior, but only if you can read their body language. The whole concept of walking that close to 'tame' lions makes me cringe.- CoolWind, on 03/09/2008, -2/+2I think the mistake was to turn her back to the lion. She was certainly lucky that it didn't kill her with it's first bite.
- beargrylls, on 03/09/2008, -0/+15It's pretty obvious the lion was just playing (though a lion's version of playing is a bit different then ours...). First of all, if it had wanted her dead he could have snapped her neck with one bite. Second, it's in classic play-mode. If you have a cat of your own you'll see them on their backs like that with a toy all the time.
Having said that, I definitely agree with your second paragraph... It's just asking for trouble.- RockMuncher, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1I've never owned a cat, and the occasional cat sitting job doesn't exactly lend itself to deep observation of their behavior, so you very well may be right... which proves my point nicely.
- TnTBass, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Naw. Let humans play with the wild animals. Make sure to video tape them getting eaten for you tube. :P

That's just wrong.- CoolWind, on 03/09/2008, -1/+3Bad spin doctors.
- jake8689, on 03/09/2008, -2/+3i love how the idea of playing for a lion is bite you head off
- queenstarsha, on 03/09/2008, -0/+3my kitty-cat's idea of fun is ripping my arms to shreds. it follows that if he were bigger, the arms would just come right off.
- InferiorWang, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Many animals have the innate instinct to play-fight. Not only is it entertaining, it helps them determine social order and teaches them what works and doesn't work when they hunt or have to fight for their lives. Little dogs like to play-fight. Big dogs like to play-fight. Wolves like to play-fight. You just have to worry more about them not realizing their own strength as they get bigger. The same is true for cats. They still like to play, but become more dangerous as they get bigger.

- RyanW2050, on 03/09/2008, -0/+9I worked with big cats (Not lions, but a variety of others ranging from tigers to bobcats) for around 4 years.
Honestly, the lion was likely playing. No amount of training can keep a cat like that from grabbing and playing (roughly) with a small child in a colorful outfit given the chance. The same goes for long hair blowing around. The mane thing was probably a bit much though.
If it wanted to kill her it would have bit the neck and shook, not roll over on it's back.
- darkmotion, on 03/09/2008, -0/+16The last picture in the series is the best. She still has blood all over her singlet - yet she still has a cheesy grin on.

- ccjensen, on 03/09/2008, -6/+3I've actually worked as one of the wardens at this place, and the only times there have been incidences are when people don't follow the basic rules. Now, with that said this should never have happened! (P.S I am in now way speaking for the program or the project)
- phenolholic, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4so she shouldn't have walked with the lions? oh she should've rode it like a pony, i get it. or maybe missed the rules of dying her hair black before attending.
- DestroyFascism, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4It shows how far removed we are from the world really is like....We took the jungle and gave it rules and street signs, now some of us don't understand what we are faced with and what that something is capable of.

Oh yeah, I see that working... Lion's idea of play = woman's idea of dead - beaunewcomb, on 03/09/2008, -1/+4You can tell by the lions' dispositions from the very beginning they weren't to interested in being her friend
- myass666mlong, on 03/09/2008, -1/+5our cats usually do like that
but those are 180 kg beasts
all cats are perfect predators and this girls was lucky - axis, on 03/09/2008, -1/+24Picture 3 tells a story. The lion closest to her has its ears pinned back, a very "duh" sign that the cat is nervous and on edge/irritated. These big cats are obviously socialized, but make no mistake, if it wanted to kill the girl she would be dead. My cats only have two levels of wrestling play, slightly painful biting without breaking the skin and aggressive behavior that you want no part of. A lioness could have punctured her throat on the first bite, this was a simple warning and put that girl in her place. Go back to the classroom teacher.
- wrathchilde, on 03/09/2008, -0/+8Agreed, that single frame didn't look like an "attack". Here is a video of what a 10 pound cat is like when it is on the attack, and the handlers can't manage it. No way do you stop the big kitty...

- Myztry, on 03/09/2008, -0/+15If the lion had intended to kill her, then she'd be dead, and no pissy wardens stick would've changed that.
Had it been a shark, a curious taste test would've been much more life threatening.

- martalli, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2Cats often don't kill right away. They like to play with their prey...so her survival might have been because the cat wanted to play with her before the kill, or maybe it was just playing with her...imagine every time a house cat scratched you and how that would have looked if the house cat weighed 200 lbs.

- Hoogie7Dowser, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1I'm not quite sure you have a housecat. If it's over 18 pounds healthy (non-obese), I think you better search for a reserve or santuary for your blood drawing friend.

- Hoogie7Dowser, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2Size is all that really separates house cats from wild lions. But size DOES matter. I'm 175lbs and after I get playjumped by my 9lb cat, I have to get a band-aid. Imagine what happens when a 110lb ample bossumed lady with a hittable tushy gets playjumped by a 290lb lioness.
She was bloody lucky.
