"Lesbian Koalas" Shake Australia To The Bone
nzherald.co.nz — Australia may not be able to handle the truth -- Female koalas indulge in lesbian "sex sessions", rejecting male suitors and attempting to mate with each other, sometimes up to five at a time, according to researchers.

So why does it seem like we are so un-constitutional and violating so many people's rights by banning gay marriage (darwin at its finest) if only a maximum of 10% of the population would stand to benefit from it. Doesn't the term "normal" mean that the view of the majority of the population is what is considered as to be common? Is it that everyone that is "normal" (I use the term loosly) just wants to work, watch American Idol, spend time with their children, and enjoy a simple life? I think that a few radical people get the main-stream media's attention and everyone interprets it as though everyone feels that way. For the record, I do not hate gay people, I honestly don't care what anyone does as long as it is behind closed doors and doesn't force it upon anyone else. - Ninja337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Australia has a lot of homosexuals who immigrate over I hear

"One theory put forward by the researchers is that the females do it to attract males" -- well I know that works for me, so I'm guessing a male koala would groove on that too...- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -23/+10Sorry to pop your bubble, but that theory has never been supported. No reproductive advantage for homosexual animals has been observed in nature.
- anidal, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5hmm.. theory of evolution needs a slight adjustment methinks
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@stonebear
Considering the very specific diet of Koalas, it may be of benefit to a population to reduce reproduction, in order to preserve food supply. Probably not a conscious attempt at environmentalism on their part, but something that is caused by an instinctive habit. Just throwing an idea out there, I don't know if anyone has researched it. - deathberry, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@Langford
It may be true that the species as a whole benefits from a smaller population, but I don't see how their lesbian gene would be passed on in that case. If that gene isn't passed on, then this behavior would die out after a generation.
I suppose that the gene could lie dormant until the environment activates it (i.e., lack of food)? - 10lbhammer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6lesbian gene? there's a lesbian gene?
if that were true, then the only homosexuals in a population would have to come from other homosexual couples, in which case the homosexuals would breed (or not, as the case may be) themselves out of a population. i.e., no more *****. - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@deathberry
Valid argument, I +dugg you.
Well, they didn't say that the Koalas stayed lesbian their whole lives or not, so there really isn't enough information to make a judgment like that. I could see how non-homosexual populations could dominate reproductive wise over pro-homosexual populations, but if they are the only group eating the food in their area, then the pro-homosexual population could have a distinct survival advantage.
Animals don't necessarily rationalize their behavior, so they are most likely "scratching an itch". It could be something as simple as that they simply didn't know the males they were confronted with and were too frightened to interact with them, yet they still had unsatisfied pangs. - stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Perhaps I should have mentioned that no reproductive disadvantage for homosexual animals has been observed in nature either. They continue to reproduce with the opposite sex in the appropriate season, but it is clearly a just a job to them. Their preference remains clearly the same sex. This is well documented in studies of such animals as penguins; arctic terns; Japanese macaques; chimpanzees ;baboons; American Brown bears; dolphins, and yes–koalas.
- br0ck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@stonebear - Scientists have found that homosexuality is found in a huge number of social species and is often used as a means of cementing social alliances: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/article1288633.ece
Also, as I mentioned here the other day, a study recently found that the female siblings of homosexual males were much more attracted to men than the average female and were found more likely to reproduce thus more than compensating for the "downside" to the family's genetic line of producing homosexual males. "We think of a gene for male homosexuality, but it may be a gene for attraction to men" http://cas.bellarmine.edu/tietjen/Human%20Nature%20S%201999/Gay%20Genetics.htm - deathberry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@10lbhammer
Actually, that's not true. Consider the social stigma against homosexuals throughout human history and, arguably still, the expectations and pressure that parents and culture put on the next generation to get married and raise families.
Even if one was gay/lesbian back then, one wouldn't have much choice but to get married and bear children (especially if one was a lesbian, since women basically had no say in the matter.) It is easy to see then how such a gene would continue to propagate generation by generation. - deathberry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Langford
Those are some very good points as well. I agree that in the situation where these lesbian koalas still reproduce with male koalas (which is a strong possibility considering Japanese macaques and other examples), then this gene would benefit that subpopulation in times of short food supply and thus propagate onwards. Thanks for the enlightening comments! - Brewin1100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The idea that a gene for homosexuality could not be passed on because of natural selection is naive. Firstly, homosexuals do have blood offspring, obviously. It happens with humans, and it happens even more frequently with animals. (It's rare that an animal that exhibits homosexual behavior doesn't also at some point participate in heterosexual behavior. Humans often engage in only one set of behavior--arguably because of social norms--but animals for the most part, do not censure their behavior because it's not the norm.)
Secondly, the idea assumes that "homosexual families" give no advantage to their offspring. That's very situational. In the human population, there is ample evidence that homosexual unions are statistically more stable than heterosexual ones. There's also evidence that average homosexual male couples are more wealthy than average heterosexual couples. Both of these, one could argue, give their offspring an advantage in social Darwinism. In the animal world, quite a few species benefit from homosexual pairings. For example, one species of seagull engages in homosexual pairings when one or more of the fathers die. Normally the resulting single female and chick would starve to death. Instead, the incoming female raises the chick with the biological female as if they were a male-female pairing. In big horn sheep, some biologists have argued that homosexual males actually serve to promote natural selection. They propose that when there aren't enough females, rams will often spar until both die or are gravely wounded, resulting in the loss of their selected DNA. Homosexual behavior in males thus alleviates competition, allowing selected genes to be passed.
In short, the idea that homosexual genes can't exist or can't be passed is false. If it were true, why would so many species exhibit such behavior? - Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1First of all, the difference between the captive and wild koalas is not whether they are "gay" or "straight", it's what proportion of ***** and heterosexual sex they have. The "gay" captive koalas still have plenty of heterosexual sex, and vice versa.
But more importantly, there is certainly no "gay gene". It is possible that some elements of their captive environment causes their preference of homosexual sex, but to suggest that it is an evolutionary process that has caused it is absurd. The evolutionary process takes many generations to produce slight changes, and the time we have been holding koalas captive for is not nearly enough to produce such a change.
I personally don't believe behaviour is greatly affected by genetics anyway, but that is a separate argument.
- Aliasing, on 10/12/2007, -7/+70I'm pretty sure anyone who is against homosexuality is just talking about dudes; lesbians are a cause we can all get behind.

- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3sad thing is that people interpret this as that they are actually homosexual, which is NOT the case. The animals don't do that in hopes of mating just as the dog that humps human legs does not actually do it for sex. They do it to show dominance. Unfortunately, sensational headlines beat out logic and reality.
- Waterrat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2 Ah the old "dominance" theory....Don't buy it, nope, not for a minute.
- Brewin1100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dominance? Seriously, think about arguments before you regurgitate what the Dog Whisperer tells you on Animal Planet. If dominance were the issue, how would you explain my neighbor's dogs who BOTH hump EACH OTHER (and just about everything else)? It's not always about dominance. Sometimes, it's simply that it feels good.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1exactly, the dogs needs to show the other which is superior. also, dogs will even lay theirselves on your feet or whatever to show dominance as well. this isn't from the dog whisperer, this is general dog knowledge. talk to any dog trainer.
- Brewin1100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I ridiculed listening to the Dog Whisperer and you responded by saying, "just ask any dog trainer." That's a bit ironic, no? But I digress.
The point is... not all mounting behavior in animals is about dominance. Dogs will hump inanimate objects. Couches, pillows, shoes. There's no reason for dogs to "dominate" those objects. Dolphins have sex for "fun." Various species of monkey and chimp do it do strengthen social bonds.
You obviously have been told by someone of questionable "authority," probably another dog owner or a dog trainer like the Dog Whisperer, that humping is about dominance and you're regurgitating it as fact. Yes, sometimes your dog is doing it as a dominance behavior. But, that DOESN'T mean that explanation applies to all mounting behavior, even in dogs.

- minox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Man, this explains all those koalas I saw with terrible haircuts.
- hreamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I LOLed!!
- jonesyhahaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Clearly this lesbians will be damned to hell for their transgressions against god.
- Sublime059, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3They had to kill hundreds of thousands of koala bears because there were too many. This is what happens when there is too many of one species. Pretty obvious.
- stustyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, the eucalyptus trees aren't going to like this. They aren't the only thing koala's will munch on now.
- kickstar1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Key point is 'when it captivity' which is an abnormal environment for them. So.... when they are in the wild i.e. a 'natural' environment, they engage in heterosexual i.e. 'normal' sexual behavior. Just like men in prison engaging in homosexual acts when they would not do it otherwise. To those who might digg me down- What's up, can't handle an opinion unlike your own? Don't be 'heterophobic' now...
- Brewin1100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're an idiot for 1) comparing animal behavior and applying human morals and 2) not taking into account that a truckload of other species exhibit homosexual behavior "naturally" in the wild.
Don't worry, I'm not heterophobic. I'm just allergic to ignorant.
