Lawmaker: Syrian reactor was a 'proliferation' threat
usatoday.com — WASHINGTON (AP) — The Syrian nuclear reactor allegedly built with North Korean design help and destroyed last year by Israeli jets was within weeks or months of being functional, a top U.S. official said Thursday.

- pentupentropy, on 04/25/2008, -2/+7Hrmmmm... who has more nukes than anyone, is a hostile country to all other countries who don't agree with them, and have a system of law that clearly states they don't have to follow any treaty when they don't think they should. Guesses, anyone?
- LewP, on 04/25/2008, -6/+3Hmmmmm and who has more terrorists in a country that supports beheadings and human rights violations? I thought so.
- Kizilbash, on 04/26/2008, -1/+1That would be the US' best buddy Saudi Arabia, not Syria. Syria is actually one of the few countries left in the Middle East that has Freedom of Religion. It is also host to a few million Iraqi refugees. That's right, the US is ***** up Iraq and Syria is helping out the victims. So yeah, it is a dictatorial regime but it has some good sides too. Saudi Arabia on the other hand, your best buddy, has none.
- Overmind12812, on 04/25/2008, -2/+2Nonetheless, the US just can't stand to see anyone else attain precious bargaining chips, also known as nuclear weapons.
- LewP, on 04/25/2008, -4/+3Ummmm Kaaayyy...did you read the story? "However, the officials said, the reactor was not configured to produce electricity and was ill-suited for research. There were also no power lines running from the reactor that would indicate it was created to produce electricity. That evidence, coupled with Syria's efforts to hide the reactor from the international community, led the administration to conclude that the reactor "was not intended for peaceful purposes." So let me understand you here. If your enemy is building nuclear reactors, you just stand by and hope they don't use them once they have them built right? You HOPE they are good guys and won't use them right? Amazing.
- LewP, on 04/25/2008, -4/+3And oh by the way...I hope everyone now understands why I dislike posting HARD stories like this...I so hate to argue with people who take the enemies side in everything....Gimme sports, at least most people understand that.
- Kizilbash, on 04/25/2008, -2/+1Syria is not my enemy.
And this story is bullcrap.- Dynamis, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2And you completely support the covert production of a nuclear arsenal? Especially by a state(your friend) that sponsors terrorism?
- Kizilbash, on 04/25/2008, -2/+1I didn't say they were my friends, they are not my enemies. There's a difference.
And if we are talking about supporting terrorism, let's talk about the US' best buddy in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia. Now there's a country that supports terrorism. And let's talk about the US itself. They have been supporting, training, funding, arming terrorists for decades in the Middle East.
And this story is still bullcrap.

- yellowcakewalk, on 04/25/2008, -3/+5Was this story cooked up by Douglas Feith at the Office of Special Plans? Will Colin Powell present the lies at the United Nations again? Will our Chimp-in-a-flightsuit swagger across the deck of an aircraft carrier again? Will our occupation forces kill another million people? That would all be just so awesome, but seeing as the country has been pillaged already by the neocons, I don't think we have the money for another war based on lies for Israel's benefit.
- Dynamis, on 04/25/2008, -2/+2No need for a war if Israel keeps non-proliferation treaty signers honest, and there wouldn't even be a need for that if El Baradei would just do his job.
- DeepState, on 04/25/2008, -2/+2If only Israel would sign the NNPT
- Dynamis, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2In a perfect world every nation would sign it. But then it's not perfect and there will always be the Syrias of the world who smile to your face and sign the agreement all the time building nukes in secret.
- Kizilbash, on 04/25/2008, -2/+1It's not perfect because countries like Israel get away with everything and then start accusing countries like Syria of doing what they got away with.
Which, I'll say it again, is BULLCRAP anyway.

So, the same ***** as Iraq. Yeah. That's credible. - Kizilbash, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1I bet that when hundreds of thousands of Syrians are dead, millions have fled the country and there is a civil war going on that the occupying Israeli and/or US troops can't or won't stop it will turn out that gosh the Syrians really didn't have any nuclear weapons after all...
Unlike Israel...
