- entropea, on 12/20/2007, -1/+7Wonder why it took so long to do this? I can't wait to show my passport to drive to Wounded Knee.
- arbouler, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5can we get universal health care too??? this could be a model for a revolutionized america!
- jasonroeber, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5Good luck!! I hope you can make it work. Now let's get the rest of the states to start to secede. The US government has never respected a treaty yet.
- Spectre74, on 12/20/2007, -5/+1There goes the peace pipe market.
- Spectre74, on 12/20/2007, -1/+1Damn innocent humor keeps slippin out.........I gotta stop that when it's racial.....unless I'm a comic.
- bat-21, on 12/20/2007, -1/+1I remember in 1982 when the people of the Florida Keys seceded and declared themselves the Conch Republic. They un-seceded when they realized that running a nation involves a lot of hard work.
- wakeupyouidiots, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1American Indians are historically extremely hard-working and completely self-reliant. Perhaps they just want to return to that without interference from Big Brother. They have broken every treaty ever made with them. We stole their lands then stuck them on reservations where their culture was destined to die. Every time the gov gets involved, they screw everything up. I'm sure they would do a much better job taking care of their own people. Good for them!
- elgordo123, on 12/20/2007, -6/+0As long as we dont need to use our Army to protect them, our Law Enforcement to protect them and take them off all U.S. wellfare I'm all for it.
- Milio7, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1This is awesome! From the article, "Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.". In these states there are a total of six military bases. I will laugh for years if they get the boot.
Do I think the Lakotas will succeed in seceeding and forming a proper nation? Not really. But with how poorly the Bureau of Indian Affairs has operated, this is fun to root for. (For those that don't know, the BIA is facing a class action lawsuit for effectively stealing assets from the Indian peoples through "accounting" mistakes.) - skytomorrownow, on 12/20/2007, -1/+61) The US government doesn't have a treaty with the Lakota Nation, it has treaties with the individual tribes of the Lakota Nation.
2) None of the official tribal sites, nor Indian Country, a respected, indian-run newspaper, have any mention of it.
3) Only ONE source on the entire Internet is running this story.
4) Russel Means, who is a great promoter of the rights of indigenous people, is also a great promoter of himself.
5) I am American Indian ( from the Salish people on the Flathead Reservation of Montana ), and follow these issues closely.
conclusion: This is a political statement by a group of individuals, and doesn't represent the official policies of an of the Tribes they claim to represent. - wmcarpenter, on 12/20/2007, -1/+0Secession seems like the right move. I'm supporting this, and The Republic of Cascadia (http://zapatopi.net/cascadia/).

- deaks, on 12/20/2007, -3/+1they'll do fine until the hordes of mexican immigrants descend upon them. without a welfare system how will they all receive healthcare and education? apparently they're certainly not going to pay for it with taxes since they won't be collecting any.
- mcla007, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1You know there IS a way to provide healthcare and education without robbing others at gun-point. It's called "private enterprise".
- ChimpFlix, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3This is great news for native Indians everywhere, and I imagine more tribes will follow suit.
- MorgaineSwann, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1The Constitution has been ripped to shreds anyway. What the hell - America is looking more and more like it's over, anyway. Go, Lakota Nation!
- chuck0255, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0Now if we can get our nation going. www dot northwesthomeland dot org.
- blueridgewv, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1Now Bush, the new Lincoln, will declare Federal war on them for their secession, and will send another General Sherman to go burn down their cities, just like they did with the South, to force their re-Union. Bush: "What about all those gambling tax revenues?" Operation Avenge Custer will soon begin.
