Digg Townhall Tonight!
Tune into the live Digg townhall tonight at 5:00pm PST/8:00pm EST.
LA Times: 'Anonymous' takes anti-Scientology to the streets
latimesblogs.latimes.com — Asked to explain the sudden groundswell of opposition to Scientology, Lynn Fountain Campbell, who said she'd been part of the church for 40 years, said, "It's just reached a critical mass. People just aren't scared anymore."

- corruptedlulz, on 02/11/2008, -6/+86To the pic: Religion. NO WAIT, CULT! *****. I knew that one too....
- dildoolielly, on 02/11/2008, -26/+4Everyone believes that their god is THE "God" and your God, well, they don't acknowlege your God. IOWs, your "God" is for *****.
Because of this, you are not allowed to "discuss" religion. Its considered inappropriate to "question" someone's level of psychosis....er',.."faith". So, we're not allowed to talk about it.
Isn't that what a child molester tells his victims?
You know you're in a cult when:
--Your teacher makes you think something is naturally wrong with you and that their is only one prescription for you and that he has the only cure. Then, he raises you up and makes you feel like the group members are the only ones privy to superduper secret knowledge that will make you more powerful than the average human(self-righteousness). This is a pattern that makes susceptible people feel that they need to be attached to the cult in order to feel good about themselves, and so they will willingly take mental and, in worst cases, physical abuse for the crumbs of selfworth that are thrown their way. But there's a difference between strictness and abuse. Unfortunately, once the line is crossed, the individual's fear of damnation or promised suffering will keep them from leaving the cult.
--Your teacher and group begins to impose their will upon the rest of your life. In worst cases, harassement may begin to happen.. Cult members may even began to stalk the individual and his family, always trying to talk to him about coming back to the cult (and pay large sums of money a.k.a "Tithe").
--The teacher and the top members make claims that cannot be substantiated by any accepted scientific resource. And when I say resource, I don't mean the latest issue of Intelligent Design magazine or texts such as the Scientology, The Bible, or Koran and so on.- CultsMolest, on 02/11/2008, -2/+9Church of Scientology or Church of Child Molestation? Confess and you will receive leniency.
- spawnfree, on 02/11/2008, -1/+13http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R2-45
proof its a cult.
"go kill that guy for me, you are actually helping him. go on now..."
***** at its most blatant and yet it works!
Scientologists defend their 'faith' because they don't want to admit they are suckers.- RobotCitizen, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1"*****" - The next word I can't wait to use again the first chance I get.
- RobotCitizen, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1The point of ANON's critisism is not th beliefs of scientology. They are not challenging the plausibility of all that stuff about Xenu, thetans, etc (although alot can be said about it). The point is the practices and conduct of this "church". Spiritual enlightenment (if you can call it that) should never come at the price of economic enslavement.
Find me one other religion in the world that has ever used the phrase "trade secret scriptures".
- xenaphobia, on 02/11/2008, -4/+1.
- Gigs, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't normally spam but I had an idea on a good way to protest: Mail the IRS an "Anonymous" suspected tax fraud form. Click below if you're intererested: http://www.digg.com/business_finance/IRS_Suspected ...
- KibibyteBrain, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I don't think it would be a very good idea to file a claim of tax fraud unless you have well documented evidence of such activity. Even if its "obvious", just making that statement to a judge in court would probably not go over well. There is quite a difference in the formality of evidence needed in making such claims to the public to make sure people know what's up, and then filing a legal complaint.
- dildoolielly, on 02/11/2008, -26/+4Everyone believes that their god is THE "God" and your God, well, they don't acknowlege your God. IOWs, your "God" is for *****.

- MsAntiSunshine, on 02/11/2008, -1/+0Ironic that you said "digged" instead of "dugg" and then made a comment on how well written the comment was.
But yes, dugg indeed, and the writing was not bad.
- RAEP, on 02/11/2008, -0/+16dugg?
- iPoodz, on 02/11/2008, -17/+80The correct nomenclature for the past participle of "to digg" is "dugg", not "digged".
The article however is well written, the author is perceptive and doesn't jump to conclusions; the author also seems to have done research, something very strange for authors of articles such as these.

- sloth15, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0While I thought the article was fair, I don't know how you would consider it to be 'researched.' The author quoted a wiki, and thought it was important to note that the protestors had little to no tan. Now, I don't live in LA, but in Chicago people are not judged by how much time they've spent in the sun.

- tc2004txst, on 02/11/2008, -4/+4If I see one more Scientology story make the top 10 again I might punch myself in the balls, as it would be more entertaining as reading a single word more of these articles. I don't care if Scientology is run by a satanic baby-molester who is drinking puppy blood as we speak, because I don't come to digg everyday to get my Scientology update. I come to digg for the variety and randomness of the stories that make the top 10 (until recently). I hope a change comes soon (either Scientology fails or people lose interest) so that digg can be returned to some sense of normality.
- Clumber, on 02/11/2008, -2/+2Digg normality : Constant "Ron Paul 08!" blathering; "Top Ten Reasons that x and Y are z!"; Cat picture that is lulz; Britney/Paris/Lindsey back in or out of rehab or jail; MS/Mac/Ubuntu sucks because...; and videos of fart humor.

- diggitny, on 02/11/2008, -5/+63Great coverage by the LA Times. Also, LA local Channel 9 ran the South Park Scientology episode on Friday night, Feb 8. Great run-up to the Anon event on Sunday.

I'll indulge your trolling for a moment. Why exactly is that sign "the dumbest fvcking sign ever made"? I'll be honest and admit that my sign judging skills aren't necessarily the greatest, but I fail to see the epic failure in that particular sign.
- oldhick, on 02/11/2008, -1/+3Right... He's intellectually bankrupt, that's the best you could come up with? See how fun it is to play that stupid game.
- dildoolielly, on 02/11/2008, -8/+1That's the best you could come up with?
- Fordi, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2The effectiveness of a sign lay not in its accuracy, nor its logical conclusion, but on the effect it has on its viewers. Thus, sure, the cost of the religion may have little to do with its known status as a cult, but the reenforcement for outsiders, and the shock of seeing those kinds of totals on an insider who has become 'clear', makes it more effective than your arguments.
IE: Deprecation is easy. Analysis is hard. The difference between a useful human and an ignorant one is clear once you understand that.

- dildoolielly, on 02/11/2008, -20/+2The Church I quit last year has just finished building a new gymnasium. Then they declared last week, they were planing to purchase a brand new tour bus for road trips.
Religion or "Cult"?- Cyrus042, on 02/11/2008, -1/+20Did they make "salvation" conditional on payments and put degrees of "enlightenment" on a scaling ladder of payments? Did they engage in character assassination and keep written records of confessions for later potential blackmail? Did they forcibly detain members in order to keep them in the "church"?
Many churches build gymnasiums for youth recreation, night programs, or multipurpose buildings. Additionally, many churches buy (or rent) buses for travel. Ex. Choir tours, public service, camp, activities, etc. I don't know your church and I don't know the needs of the neighborhoods around you, but I think you're really over-reacting and this is from someone who raised in the church and left it a long time ago.
Scientology and your run of the mill christian church are not remotely equivalent. Negligent homicide or building a gymnasium? Grow up.- PawnsOfJoshua, on 02/11/2008, -1/+0"Did they make "salvation" conditional on payments"
The Catholic church did this for centuries by selling indulgences.
- PawnsOfJoshua, on 02/11/2008, -1/+0"Did they make "salvation" conditional on payments"
- Jashobeam5, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Which bothered you the most the gym or the bus? Do you have an inherent bias against gyms or busses? I guess old church people shouldn't ever go on trips together and young church people don't have a need for a church basketball league because either scream of cult to you.
- Mier, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I always get asked for donations or tithes at church but never do I get a demand. Nor do they make me feel bad for not giving money because money isn't the goal of most churches. Scientology has to pay for those lawyers somehow so they charge for salvation. My thaetan is telling me to shut up but I keep poking him in the eye so he stays quiet.

You see, 4chan was started in late 2003. Digg wasn't born until almost 2005.
Since 4chan came first, Digg was stealing it's users. In fact, you can say that since news of Digg spread on 4chan and not the other way around that Digg was partially founded by 4channers.
Sorry.- DavidGX, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1I would've swore Digg was founded by a couple guys, not 4chan. I also hardly doubt digg, a site about tech news is STEALING users from boards filled with racist morons posting porn. Get over yourself.

- HerrEisenheim, on 02/11/2008, -27/+8I really don't get why anyone cares. If you are dumb enough to give your money to Scientology—well... if you can't waste it there, you'll waste it somewhere else. If Scientology closed its doors tomorrow, its followers would just go and give their money to the nearest psychic. A fool and his money are easily parted, and Scientology is no great exception. As South Park put it: it's a pyramid scheme on a global level. It's not new. It's not special. It's just stupid. Who ***** cares? Let people do what they want, no matter how misguided it may be. If it makes them happy... well, maybe it's not a waste. They are trading their money for some kind of utility.
Collectively, "the internet" is ***** stupid. This is the kind of ***** that communities like Digg and Reddit care about it. Scientology and the HD-DVD encryption key. ***** that doesn't ***** matter. Why does it happen then? Because it's easy and just a big joke to everyone. No one really ***** cares about these things, they just want to have fun making a big deal over something that really doesn't matter; because real issues are hard to deal with, so why not make a big fuss over some inane *****?- DCJoeDogaswell, on 02/11/2008, -8/+4TL;DR
We didn't care enough to read your post, sorry.
Also, STFU Scifag!! - Cyrus042, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8Okay Herr, what would you propose should be done about those that are held prisoners of the church, either physically or through blackmail? It's a pretty radical idea at first, but you can find plenty of personal accounts of individuals who are stuck in the church and plenty who have committed suicide or physical retained (and consequently resulted in their death. Refusal of psychoactive drugs prescribed for condition)
A fool and his money is soon parted, but what happens when the fool realizes his mistake and is committed to a lifetime of abuse? - CultsMolest, on 02/11/2008, -6/+0Church of Scientology or Church of Child Molestation? Confess and you will receive leniency.
- ronaldinho, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2This is how many times you have posted to the same message? It's getting annoying so reallty, please STFU
- ronaldinho, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Well, simply put, we all make mistakes sometimes, some costlier than others. Don't tell me you are perfect. Maybe you can say you won't be dumb enough to make such a mistake, but well, frankly, there will be people who will be dumber than you. But they deserve a second chance as much as us when we make a mistake. And oh, I'm sure there are some people who got scammed, can't get out of it, and is no happy camper in scientology. And as a Christian, I say it is NOT a church.

I didn't know real people all have dark tans, my bad ***** LA TIMES, ***** YOU!- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+13It was their way of saying the people at the even were mostly basement-dwellers.

- VinnieDaMac, on 02/11/2008, -2/+4I love how the article pretty much says that everyone there was a nerd. "mostly young, white and computer-oriented -- few had anything like a serious tan --"
- theotheragentm, on 02/11/2008, -2/+21Maybe they meant Computer Oriental. Us Asians are good at computers and math.
- eosp, on 02/11/2008, -1/+3Not English apparently. "We Asians."
- jm4847, on 02/11/2008, -4/+7Stupid biased article calling people "nerds" just because of their appearance.
But well done guys. - SuperMoses, on 02/11/2008, -2/+5I like how their chants and half their signs had nothing to do with anti-Scientology
- MalDON, on 02/11/2008, -2/+9That's the downside to letting 4chan organize things. Longcat just ruined it for most people. Even my dad was like wtf?
- fxu1989, on 02/11/2008, -2/+1I guess some people didn't fully understand the "and for our enjoyment" part...
XD
- EaterOfSnow, on 02/11/2008, -9/+3Isn't it well known that religion/cults thrive when persecuted?
- boombye, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6So do you think Tom Cruise is the one that started this whole thing in an attempt to drive their members to feeling persecuted and to reinforce their beliefs in Xenu? lol
- itsHef, on 02/11/2008, -14/+2I'm all for "anonymous" but the "V" masks makes them all look like a bunch of tools.

- PhilLesh69, on 02/11/2008, -11/+5Why do people allow themselves to be distracted by a fringe religious group while there are more important things to focus on?
This might as well be a call to debate the pros and cons of Paris Hilton or Britney Spears.
Get some perspective!
We have a presidential election. We have a war that nearly no american citizen supports. We have telecoms spying on us for the govt.- hatdrop, on 02/11/2008, -4/+5maybe you'll find the answer in that this is the only productive thing the ordinary citizen can partake in and see actual results.
election:
if you're actually politically savy then you should know of the disenfranchisement that occurs in these damn elections; ohio, florida countless situations of redistricting. ***** there's thousands of votes not being counted in LA alone.
war:
***** that war was a blank check the american people signed. i was one of the few against it from the very start only to be labeled a traitor or some other form of unpatriotic. you inform the masses that they're giving the president an open slate and you're called a bin laden lover, all of a sudden people realize the ***** they let loose and suddenly they don't want it? chickens coming home to roost sound familiar? either way, as you said most of the folks don't support it now and if they get fooled a THIRD time well you know what that's on the american people.
this on the other hand a group of people telling you what to believe and forcing you to pay to believe it, not unlike our current government. but at least with this target it's easier to draw up common support from everyone.
- hatdrop, on 02/11/2008, -4/+5maybe you'll find the answer in that this is the only productive thing the ordinary citizen can partake in and see actual results.
- mikelist, on 02/11/2008, -1/+32scientology is no more a religion than general motors. in 1972, i was in denver and i met some scientologists. they offered to buy me lunch, but when they found i was broke, they bolted and left me with the bill. a real religion doesn't require you to pay money for your redemption.
- PawnsOfJoshua, on 02/11/2008, -1/+0You mean like the Catholic church did for centuries by selling indulgences?
- mikelist, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1nothing to brag about for the vatican of those days, but that practice has been long discontinued. and of course, since you obviously don't know, indulgences were dispensed to take time off one's 'purgatory' stay, not to save them from damnation. therein lies the difference.
purgatory is a catholic concept of a period of minor torment to atone for venial sins, a mortal sinner would go straight to hell. ergo you could go to heaven without buying indugences, as opposed to cos' money driven plan.

- momonami, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7lmao why would you chant " WE ARE ANON" with no mask on? just asking to get killed.
- LovelyNeko, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Touché, the CIA black ops are on the way.
- typon1, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6lol i read "(or in some cases, danced with) by rollicking protesters..." as rickrolling protesters.
- sturdiusmaximus, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Me too. I had to go back and check to make sure my eyes hadn't deceived me.
- Mysk, on 02/11/2008, -0/+8Watched the video. There's a dude in there without a mask or any sort of disguise chanting "We are anonymous" right along with the others.

It's the middle of frickin winter. - Hillsbottom, on 02/11/2008, -3/+9anyone worried that anonymous is becoming a cult?
- LovelyNeko, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Nope

Anon + Cult = WTF Is this ***** == FAIL
- bwmdiym, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I wish someone would post some pics from the protest in ATL the cops were in full riot gear!
- hybs, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4Well done, now we should focus on the Westboro Baptist Church... Any takers?
- londonroad, on 02/11/2008, -1/+5No.
- kds405, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4Westboro Baptist Church is a marginal group of people. I think around 100. The only reason they seem so threatening is because every anchor and talk show host has had Shirley Phelps on their show. They don't want to hear what she has to say, they just want to yell at her. By doing this, they are giving her hate a platform.
- Jashobeam5, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2I agree. The only time they should be in the news is when non-racists can stop them from upsetting a funeral, etc.. They picketed our church at the same time a homosexual group did. WBC was not allowed in, but the homosexual group was welcomed into the service.
- YoHenYo, on 02/13/2008, -0/+1Even Tyra had them on...as i'm sure you are well aware.
- SwedishNinja, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Negative. WBC are just real life trolls. If Anon did any thing, Fred Phelps would jump out from under his bridge and say "TROLLED, LOL! NEWFAGS!"
- CheapDigWannbe, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Roksix that is you?!
