reuters.com — The Knights Templar, the medieval Christian military order accused of heresy and sexual misconduct, will soon be partly rehabilitated when the Vatican publishes trial documents it had closely guarded for 700 years.

- flogistan, on 10/14/2007, -85/+4Catholics should stay catholic. The knights templar is a pagan religion.
- groverblue, on 10/13/2007, -9/+78I'm not sure where you are going with that, but Christianity stole most Pagan beliefs and holidays in an attempt to convert people. It worked.
- flogistan, on 10/13/2007, -4/+21Yeah, that's true. If you're not a religious person, stuff like this doesn't make much difference to you.
- gbarger, on 10/13/2007, -29/+7You've been reading Dan Brown a little too much....I like his books, but you need to take anything with a grain of salt from a man that doesn't even realize that symbology isn't even a word.

Dan Brown was not the first to make that assertion. Look up Halloween.

- Sabretou, on 10/15/2007, -0/+6The only thing Dan Brown ever did was popularize the conspiracy theories and secrets. They have been known for decades. Apparently, YOU need to stop reading Dan Brown.
- doctechnical, on 10/13/2007, -0/+72The Templars were not a religion, they were a religious order. There's a difference.
- Bdog2g2, on 10/13/2007, -0/+18People with closed minds and their own perceptions of things don't care about differences...only what they believe is the truth.

- UpBeforeSunrise, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1That was my point ,its not only 7th day adventists celibrate 7th day Sabbath ,So I am just trying to defend against the idea All Christians are Sun worshipers or otherwise easily led ,when as a Christian I have probably done as much or more research into the subject as those who would accuse.
- UpBeforeSunrise, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3Seriously I have looked into almost every claim made in Zeitgeist and alot of them are interesting ,but it is far from a credible source ,alot of them are outright lies ,or misrepresentations .I admit that It is interesting alot of customs some Christians practice without questioning why they do it like Sunday sabbath ,santa ,and I could name a ton of others .As a follower of Christ I have done a whole lot of research into the claim of Sun worship but I just dont think there is much to it ,most of the customs are Catholic and the claims about th mithras Horas ect. were very debatable.Do your own research please.

This is what I'm ***** psyched for. I don't care if they change it around a little and make the old pope look nice, I just want ***** historical-fiction to get debunked. Also kudos to whoever submitted this, it's good to see something other than iPhones, Blackwater, or Ron Paul on digg these days.

- rmxz, on 10/13/2007, -11/+61Were the Knights Templar kinda like the Blackwater of their days?
From Wikipedia "best equipped, best-trained...fighting units of the Crusades... created mistrust...had a powerful patron...exempted the Order from obedience to local laws...exempt from all authority except that of the Pope. .. The Order was still subject to no local government, making it everywhere a "state within a state". It also had a standing army that could pass freely through all borders, but that no longer had a well-defined battlefield"- 8270369, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1No. Not even remotely. TKT were comparable to "Section One." But Mr. Jones was the Pope.
- youMISERABLEpos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Duug up for typing what I was thinking..
- blatantninja, on 10/13/2007, -0/+11Not at all. They were closer to special forces. They had very strict requirements that went beyond just ability, and despite coming from wealth (you had to be a knight before entrance), lived as monks live (You had to disavow all your wealth when you joined) . A great order that has been very misrepresented by history.
- hiphoc, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Well, until the Vatican releases more documents to prove that. I will take all statements about the Templar's with a touch of salt.
- OBKenobi, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1
lived as monks live
So when did all the sexual misconduct take place?
Sorry, but when you mix the military and religious fascism, in a war of genocide, you don't get nice, rational people. They were WORSE than Blackwater.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/13/2007, -2/+23I hope someone scans this so us poor folks can read it.
- Frosty122, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i doubt it's in english, it's either in Latin, or Italian..
- BrettTheUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Latin, but the article did say it included scholarly commentary, which is most likely Italian, English, German, Spanish or French, or any combination thereof.
- ramiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of the pictures showed the cover: "Processus contra Templarios". That looks like Latin.
- BrettTheUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Latin, but the article did say it included scholarly commentary, which is most likely Italian, English, German, Spanish or French, or any combination thereof.
- Godlesswanderer, on 10/13/2007, -0/+9Since it was written in the Vatican 700 years ago it'll most likely all be in Latin.
- Scynet, on 10/13/2007, -0/+7As a side note, I wonder how good those Latin-to-english online translators actually are. I mean they're nowhere near perfect of course, but do they actually work in any practical way? It's hard to say when you don't know Latin...
- Frosty122, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i doubt it's in english, it's either in Latin, or Italian..
- hiphoc, on 10/13/2007, -2/+26I wonder how many other historical facts the Church is holding in its vaults. Its always nice to hear that the people who want to tell us how history is, always choose to withhold historical proof of certain historical facts. This is no better than all the "Top Secret" documents this government has. Knowledge is power. Control knowledge and you control the power of the citizens to make better choices.
- kageki, on 10/13/2007, -1/+8That was one of my first thoughts too especially when it mentioned Vatican's Secret Archives. So they just released this after 700 years which implies there are many more documents locked in their vaults. Sort of sends shivers down my spine.
I would imagine one the biggest secrets it is holding pertains to the Bible itself. We know it's been edited and we know some parts of it has been left out of the official version so I imagine there are parts that have been completely kept secret like the real story of Jesus.- avengingturnip, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1There were all kinds of conspiracy theories about the Dead Sea Scrolls too. "The Vatican is covering something up!", people shouted. Turns out it just took that long to stabilize, categorize, and transcribe and translate all the documents. The case of the Vatican archives is even worse. Many thousands of items that have not been looked at in centuries and have never been translated. They are available for scholarly studies but the reality is it is not humanly possible to just make these things available to the public. The Templar information was released specifically because of all the current historical fiction that treats the subject, like The DaVinci Code and its derivatives.
- hiphoc, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2The Vatican has one of the largest art and book libraries in the world. All kept away from the public. That hiding of beauty and knowledge is a sin in itself. Last time I checked there were a lot of religious wars that may have helped the Vatican collect all that booty it has hidden.
- kageki, on 10/13/2007, -1/+8That was one of my first thoughts too especially when it mentioned Vatican's Secret Archives. So they just released this after 700 years which implies there are many more documents locked in their vaults. Sort of sends shivers down my spine.

- _jinx_, on 10/13/2007, -9/+2I highly doubt these document's even hold any validity since it's been in there hands all this time, let alone releasing it won't due much besides cause an uproar regarding interpretation, however I'm sure its great reading material for the enthused occultist.
- Scrappy1850, on 10/13/2007, -10/+5this is like the OJ trial, but less interesting
- dondara, on 10/13/2007, -6/+4Aww come on, digg this guy up, thats funny
- ryangoff, on 10/13/2007, -2/+18Wait .. so they're not releasing the original (at least to be academically reviewed) and they're selling 799 copies for $8,333? Looks like the church is a little strapped for cash. Another interesting points: The document proves that the Knights were absolved of hearsay, but then tortured into confessing that they did it and then they were burned at the stake. Doesn't that sound familiar?
- WNW3, on 10/13/2007, -0/+7It'll raise more money than Bingo and Pancake dinners combined!
- Godlesswanderer, on 10/13/2007, -0/+10That's the way things worked back then. If someone wouldn't confess to what you wanted them to, you could torture them into confessing. Then use that confession as proof and have them executed.
- kageki, on 10/13/2007, -0/+6Gee that sounds like what the Bush administration is doing today. Ohh dig me down but I'm not kidding. That is exactly how the tortures are being used. Everyone knows torture doesn't provide reliable information. This article backs up my claims:

- Godlesswanderer, on 10/13/2007, -1/+16I wouldn't be surprised if they went back even further, the Vatican has been there for a very long time.
- oldeenglish, on 10/13/2007, -0/+6I totally agree. This is the more significant part of the story. It amazes me that an organization like the Vatican has persisted for close to two thousand years and probably has compiled detailed records for much of their history. During the dark ages it became the font of knowledge for much of western Europe. Yes it controlled the information to possibly the detriment of the people but the impressive part is that they had that information.
- kageki, on 10/13/2007, -1/+2This really explains a lot. In many ways have we ever gotten out of the Dark Ages controlled by the Vatican? It's impressive to me they both possess and have controlled information for all this time and continue to do so might I add.

- dondara, on 10/13/2007, -7/+3Forgive the Jews? *****. Too bad the Romans ever stopped tossing those damn christians to the lions. If they hadn't been so tolerant, they could have saved the world a lot of misery.
- Vazel, on 10/13/2007, -2/+1Uh, the romans weren't tolerant at all to the Christians. They tried their best to suppress(which only served to create martyrs) them but history would favor them when Constantine decided to exploit the ~10% Christians concentrated in the cities to build his power on. A significant portion considering only 40% of Romans lived in cities and power was based in the cities.
- han52, on 10/30/2007, -1/+0Actually the Romans were at first quite tolerant to Christians, just as they were to the many religious groups which were in the Empire. They had no problem with Christian beliefs per se, but did not understand why Christians would not also honor Roman Gods and participate in state religious observances. For Romans, to do so was seen as a display of good citizenship and respect for tradition and social order. What one believed when doing so was a private matter, but participation on some level was expected.

- ReeseKaine, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3I remember something about this during an MSNBC special called "In Search of Satan". During one segment, they talked about how on Friday the 13th (We're getting into origins, folks), the Knights Templar were executed by the Church for "Obscene Kisses".
My only question then and now is: What the ***** are "Obscene Kisses"?- chestertonb, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Didnt they have a number one hit in 1973 with "Baby I want your love thang"
- bluto36, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3kissing a bunghole might be obscene.
- cranium, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Hey, now, stop giving Father O'Malley ideas.

- Infantrydude, on 10/13/2007, -1/+5Now that the Templars are back it is time to start a new Crusade!
- aslave2thegrind, on 10/13/2007, -2/+3Infantry: No...as a member of the Commandery myself I must advise you that we (Knights Templar) left Jerusalem because we knew it wasn't worth fighting for. If you watch "Kingdom of Heaven" you can find a bit of our history in the ending when the Knights of Malta (who BECAME the Knights Templar of today) LEFT that sandbox in the hands of those who are willing to fight and die over sand...earth...oil...whatever. As we no longer seek to rebuild a physical temple, we can now focus on doing our work anywhere in the world.
There was a great special on PBS not long ago that had members of the order who were flying or driving clandestinely in Afghanistan and the Phillipines delivering aid right in the middle of war-torn areas. It was very inspiring.
As far as this "reprieve" from the Catholic Church...it's several hundred years too late and doesn't really affect anything other than the status of Templars who HAPPEN TO BE Catholic. (Not many of those, by the way.)
Anyhow, here's a great video on my blog which is probably the most accurate I've seen in describing the ancient and honorable fraternity that has done a great deal for the cause of Liberty and Charity worldwide for hundreds of years...some say thousands. Enjoy. http://jeremiasx.wordpress.com/2007/08/04/freemaso ... - Babykitkat, on 10/13/2007, -5/+3The Vatican Ordered 911 All Roads lead to Rome

http://spirituallysmart.com/Jones-CIA.htm - databoy, on 10/13/2007, -3/+5Maybe the "BISHOP of ROME" is about to admit that JESUS CHRIST was an invention of the Roman Empire and the "TRUE RELIGION" is the worship of "SOL INVICTUS".
- webcite1, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1SOL....... The SUN !!!.........Not the son!
- Bamborzled, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Wasn't the Sol Invictus also made up by the Roman Empire?
