The members of the church really believe they are doing the right thing though. In their minds their mission, too clear the planet, is the only hope for mankind.
The cult is dangerous because of its mission and the way it conditions people to absolute loyalty to the cult, above any other loyalties to family or real world office they may hold in Government or authority.
