That's what I'd do. - steve9924, on 11/21/2008, -3/+30about freakin' time !
- amitlu, on 11/21/2008, -3/+20And to think, it only took seven years and a new president elect to close the book on this embarrassing moment in history.
- davidtowers, on 11/21/2008, -2/+18"7 years is enough" - Am sure the prisoners agree!
- JohnnyQwest, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14really, five is the best they could do?

- Julie188, on 11/21/2008, -1/+14Good. Let's not become that which we are trying to stop.
- threemagic, on 11/21/2008, -0/+12You can't handle the truth...
- kanabiis, on 11/21/2008, -0/+12"We hold these truths to be self evident, that ALL men are created equal..." - Declaration of Independence
What part of ALL men do you not understand?
The Bill Of Rights applies to all persons within the US borders or territories. This is backed by a hundred plus years of case law. Infact civil rights cases have all been won specifically because the Supreme Court has ruled time and time again that the Constitution applies to all persons not just citizens.
Remember children, there was a time when both black people AND women were not considered citizens, yet both of those groups won landmark civil rights cases directly because the Supreme Court ruled that the Bill of Rights extended to include them, regardless of how the law at the time viewed them, either as property (blacks) or as lesser beings (women).
This new ruling is only applying existing case law not reinventing the facts as some of you people may believe.
But hey, lets not let facts get in the way here..... - thecatcantalk, on 11/21/2008, -0/+11Holy cow, the Federal government is actually obeying U.S. law for the first time in 8 years. Will wonders never cease?
- numberneal, on 11/21/2008, -1/+12i thought they were shutting that down.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+13It's about time that they are given their day in court and get what they really deserve. You think they have it bad now, wait until they are released into general population of a federal pen lol.
- swrostmore, on 11/21/2008, -2/+12Close the book? What about the hundreds of other prisoners who are still being detained without trial?
- WendyThomas, on 11/21/2008, -0/+10"7 years is enough" sounds like a solid legal argument
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+9Shut the ***** up.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+9I think I'd be quite angry after 7 years.
- NorthMass, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8If Obama is as great as everyone makes him out to be then he better close Gitmo and attempt to get rid of the Patriot Act by the end of his first term. I am not holding my breath since he voted YES to the Patriot Act, but I would love to be proven wrong.
- Yuusharo, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8...so you're okay with imprisoning people in a United States facility for seven years of their life without seeing a judge or having any way to defend themselves? You're okay with our government charging them with crimes against this country, then making it illegal for us to investigate those charges and see if those people actually did what our government said they did?
Not only are there severe moral issues at stake here (which I find funny that you're for preaching traditional family values yet its okay to dehumanize people if they're not one of us), but there's also legal issues regarding the UN and our position in the world.
In eight years, our country has become the target of hatred and disgust not by just our enemies, but by our allies as well. And this prison facility is a big part of that reason. - sodade, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8YOU are at war with a religion. Not me.
I am much more afraid of YOU than I am of them. - Yuusharo, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Actually, if someone comes to this country illegally, they are still sent through our system of due-process regardless if they're non-citizens.
So... you're wrong. No two ways about it, you're wrong. - diggdatt, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7***** you Bush
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6way, way too late.
Stop being romantic about it and do something. - bowens44, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5what a ridiculous statement. if the bush admin had evidence that these poeple committed crimes they wouldn't have been released. The US should not only release them, they should compensate them for their time.
- Cancerkitty, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6Hah, seems reasonable enough.
- savvvy, on 11/21/2008, -1/+67 years is enough
- melissawm, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Mongo2001, these guys were arrested in BOSNIA and were declared innocent by the Bosnian Supreme Court before being "given" to the US after your government pressured the Bosnian government. There are absolutely ZERO proof that they did anything wrong, they were not terrorists or involved with Al Qaeda, they were simply Bosnians of Algerian origin. They were stuck in Guantanamo because the Bosnian government, now, doesn't want them back, and in Algeria, after being considered "islamists" (when they're not, they're simply muslims), they will face torture and even death... And did I mention they are INNOCENT???
FYI, one of these guys was so severely beaten in Gitmo he lost the movement in half his face. One of the others did a hunger strike, so they force fed him for months.
Get your facts straight before you say something stupid. - malex, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5You are mistaken. Read this:
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion ... - jimmyp3016, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7oh really?
how are all Americans at fault for something they have no control over?
you dumb uneducated *****. - Qeveren, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Considering no one there has even had a trial, who's to know how many are innocent?
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4U.S. District Judge Richard Leon FTW!
- oboshoe, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4I wonder what politics played into this. I mean why now. Why not 6 months ago. 6 months from now?
Perhaps they were well on track to being released, but it was bumped up a bit to deny Obama the accolades for doing it?
I wonder if they would have been released if McCain had won?
I wonder if they should have been released at all
(yes..Im quite cynical of all government wonks) - piesforyou, on 11/21/2008, -0/+47 years. That is somewhere around a TENTH of your life. That's enormous!
- malex, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3DulcetTone, I think what this event should demonstrate to you is that we actually DON'T know that the "majority" of detainees were committing or planning acts of terrorism. All of the claims you're making; that all detainees were waging war without uniforms, that they were captured armed on the field of battle, that they're "the worst of the worst", those were said about these 5 men too.
A lawful and just government does not need to fear fair trial and the rights of Habeus Corpus. Those Jihadis who have committed war crimes should and will be punished, but every person being held without evidence is a travesty against everything we're supposed to believe in. - rdoger6424, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3If he's going to be socialist, he's going to stop the embargo with cuba, therefore turning it into a giant carribean resort. Resorts are capitalist, last time I checked.
- aladrin, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3If there's 'proof' they need to be taken to court as our system was designed for. If there's no 'proof', they need to be let go.
- acmaurer, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4agreed - hopefully releases like this will happen soon.
- mitchelwinters, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Unbelievable that we are still taking this is, who is going to stop the government from doing this?
- socialpyramid, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4let's hope
- violentvinyl, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3All great questions, all of which you'll most likely never get an answer for. Blame it on the sound bite media or a government that feels it isn't bound by it's own laws. What are we going to do about it?
- jodes440, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Agreed. Enough of the crazy religious people trying to kill us all. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
- snea, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3beecock: everytime I read one of your comments this is what comes to mind:

Please stop posting. - sanosuke001, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Voting doesn't fix everything. We can choose someone who promises to do something and then does the exact opposite. Then, we're stuck with them for 4 years. We can't vote to impeach them, only Congress can. After the fact, it's really out of our hands.
Oh, then there's the multitude of officials we can't vote for. How do we do anything about them? Do you think I voted for the guy who runs Guantanamo? Or the Secretary of Defense? Get your head out of your ass and stop blaming people who really don't have much control over anything. - sremick, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Wow, talk about utterly clueless.
- J16T3CH, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3I think Obama plans on shutting down Gitmo, as well as many other hardly publicized prisons across Europe.
- tumatakuru, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Let em have a far trial.
Let em be presumed innocent until found guilty. - wrobson, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3lets put Bush in a hole give him a shovel to dig himself out...hopefully we never see him again.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately, the Justice Department will probably appeal this, which, according to this same judge, will probably take upwards of another two years to resolve.
/facepalm - toekneebullard, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3What did Obama have to do with this?
You're really stretching here. - inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2I AM at war with religion and I am afraid of that guy too!
